I had an unfortunate experience with this salon as a first-time customer. I was late to my appointment due to two unexpected traffic accidents, which caused me to arrive past the grace period. When the salon reached out to check on my status, I explained that I had just parked and was walking over. I completely understood when they had to cancel my appointment due to my tardiness and apologized several times. However, when I went online to rebook, I discovered that I had been blacklisted. While I fully understand that late arrivals, cancellations, and no-shows are difficult for any business, being blacklisted on a first offense seems bizarre and unfair. I would have completely understood if this were a second offense or a recurring issue, but things happen, and this was an unavoidable situation. I guess my name didn't fit with their salon aesthetic enough to give me a one-time warning as a first-time client. Unfortunately, I understand that it is still within their rights to refuse service. Just a heads up for other potential clients--be prepared to predict unforeseen delays and call well in advance--24 hours to be exact! Prefer to take my money elsewhere. read more

Megan did a lovely job reviving my limp, shapeless hair into a cut with movement and texture. The salon is a cute space tucked in the back of a comic shop, and street parking wasn't an issue. I scheduled my appointment online and received text confirmation several days prior, as well as the day of. I'm very happy with my new hairstyle and plan to come back to Megan regularly! read more

Starshine Salon - Haircut and blow dry by Megan - Hair Salons Near Me - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I have to leave a review because I'm absolutely happy i finally found my hairdresser at Starshine salon!!! Moved to the area over a year ago from out of state & always went to different salons & left disappointed & felt like whoever was doing my hair didnt take the time to explain anything & care or the end result was always just ok & pricey for what i was getting. The opposite with Starshine Salon! After reading the great reviews on yelp i gave it a try. I booked last month for my first time there & Grace was my hairdresser. I go for blonde highlights & a haircut & my hair IS a hot mess & has been for a long time with so much damage to it. My fault & not knowing what products to use/do etc. Anyway, from the beginning Grace is super sweet & friendly and ACTUALLY listens to you then gives you her opinions/input after the sit down consultation. No bs on the end result you hope for that day - she will honestly tell you if it's possible to achieve or not on that day or over time. She is a very talented hairdresser, colorist & hair stylist & for the first time in a very long time i left the salon feeling like she nailed what i wanted (even tho we are working on a slow way to getting my hair healthy again which is the best way to go the result both times was perfect!) I had my second appointment yesterday & again huge success & great results! I used all the tips & tricks she advises me on each time & it is a game changer. The Salon is located in the back of a bookstore so at first you dt realize its the salon too. She & Su Shan are both so nice! They offer you water or even wine while getting your hair done. Small salon but 10000 times better than any other in the area or Manayunk acting all like they are better than you & giving you the stuck up uptight attitude on top of outrageous prices for just ok results. As a result when you dont treat customers right well you dont get their business again!!!! Local, small & caring abt your customers is how you keep customers loyal! Starshine salon gets that concept perfectly. I cannot recommend this place enough & will keep on returning each & everytime! Thank you Grace! Thank you Starshine Salon! read more

I found Starshine from the reviews, and couldn't be happier! Grace is amazing. She is a super talented colorist, she listens to what you want, pays attention to your lifestyle (I'm a low maintenance hair girl), and is a blast. I've been struggling to find someone who could lighten me up and give me a natural bright look (see the pic - it's so good!!) and she's incredible! Can't recommend her and Starshine enough. read more

I've been seeing Su-Shan for over 2 years now and although my life has changed almost as much as my hair, her impeccable service has remained consistent. A diamond in the rough of Roxborough/Manayunk, Starshine provides all of the pizzaz without the pretentiousness of a high-end salon. At the helm are two wonderful women and a revolving slew of "junior stylists" trying to get their scissors sharpened in the business. Su-Shan is talented, San Francisco edgy with the personality of Southern sweet tea. She remembers conversations you had and exactly how your dye was mixed last time. She's happy to give suggestions, or follow direction. We always talk for a few minutes about style goals, she'll give me her input and then we chat away while she works her magic. In fact, Su-Shan is so wonderful my mother has started making the drive from Delaware to Manayunk every few weeks to see her (she doesn't even do that for me!) Yes, there are many good salons in the area. Starshine is special though. It's cozy, warm and they take pride in their work. I've never felt rushed, unappreciated or judged if I come in with overgrowth. When I decided to dye my hair with henna, she provided valuable advice on transitioning back without the slightest hint of "good Lord, what were you thinking?!" I'm not sure they are currently accepting new clientele, but if they open their books, you should consider emailing for an appointment. Life is too short for snooty salons charging a premium for a lackluster hair experience. read more

Starshine Salon was such a great experience! My stylist, Megan, was so friendly and professional. She did an absolutely amazing job on my hair - I had let it grow quite long over the past few months and she cut it perfectly to just longer than shoulder length, just as I had wanted. This is a great salon and I will definitely be back! read more

I CANNOT say enough about Starshine - I have had the honor of having Grace as my stylist for the past few years and every visit is magic. Grace has seen me through all different styles and colors and has a gift for gab like no other. It's the closest thing to Steel Magnolias but without the sad ending. :) read more

Thank you Su-Shan! I should have done this review much sooner. From my first visit to the one Sunday (yup Sunday) Su-Shan has exceeded expectations every time. My hair always looks great and my color and cut has been complimented by my out of town stylist as well along with friends and family etc. Starshine is definitely a jewel! So glad I was referred by someone who I ran into by chance. And her hair was phenomenal. I asked who did her hair and she referred me to Su-Shan. read more

Starshine Salon is the best salon you can ever imagine. The girls here are so fantastic at taking care of you and doing anything they can to make it the best hair care ever. So far I have gotten my hair colored twice by Grace. Not only did she do a perfect job of multicolored look but she is such a sweetheart and puts so much passion into getting to to look just right! I have been so happy with my coloring and my family has adored it! If you ever need your hair done and want a fantastic experience definitely see Grace!!! You won't regret it!! read more

Shan had done my hair for my wedding a couple months prior and I was more than pleased as it came out to be simple and romantic to reflect my inner self. I returned a couple of months later and decided it was time for a haircut. It's been years since I last found someone who can properly cut my hair the way I wanted it to turn out. On top of getting a beautiful haircut, I also got it dyed from Shan. The color turned out to be exactly what I expected as it was just a subtle tint but very noticeable when I step out into the sun. Do I recommend? Absolutely. read more

My typical haircuts/color cost $250. I moved here a year ago, and I am sick of going back home for haircuts. After much research, I decided on SuShan. I was nervous at first because the place was small, and I am used to the big spa-like salons. (Apparently Starshine is moving to a larger space within the month.) if you're reading this prior to the move, don't let the space fool you. The end result was better than any $250 dollar hair cut I have ever had. SuShan is personable, good-hearted, communicative, and talented. She did EXACTLY what I asked, for almost half the price, including product. I kept trying to find reasons to throw money at her, and it's not like I have much. I am super fussy about my hair. Thin hair demands perfection... There is no margin for error. She did a GREAT job. I will be telling everyone about this place. read more

After coming here, I can see why this place has such great ratings! I had a wonderful experience here. I come here to get a trim and Su Shan did a great job with my hair. I LOVED how she did not try to promote or try to sell me products during my visit. I have this problem everywhere I go, someone will be pushing a product at me because my hair is lacking "x, y, z" so I need "a, b, c" to fix it. I was able to enjoy my conservation without worrying about being pressured to buy products for my hair. During the haircut process, Su Shan also double checked with me at the end to see if my hair was cut to the way I wanted and was willing to make any changes if something was not right. I really appreciated this gesture, since normally the stylist doesn't offer this. This place also offers to make any small adjustments to your haircut if you don't find it the way you want after a few days. Su Shan has definitely earned my trust and I can see myself coming back to this place. read more

My experience at Starshine was almost identical to the experience shared by one of the previous reviewers. And I agree with everyone else who has reviewed thus far that Su Shan, the owner of Starshine, is an amazing stylist. She was friendly over the phone when I was making the appointment, and also when I was calling in to let her know I was running a few minutes late late. My appointment was on a Thursday evening at 6 p.m. on a snowy evening, and I was the last person in the salon at the time. And yet, I did not feel rushed at all. After I got there, Su Shan sat me in the chair and we went over the color that I wanted and the type of haircut I wanted. Like a previous reviewer said, Su Shan listened to exactly what I wanted, and told me everything she was going to do before she actually did it. I wanted brown/caramel highlights with a hint of plum and that's exactly what I got. I love my highlights, and I got compliments from so many people. I have a young son; so I needed a style that was easy to maintain yet hip and sophisticated for my work. And that's exactly what she gave. I am very picky about my haircuts and for the past few years, I've been salon hopping because I haven't loved my haircuts since my favorite hairdresser moved out of town. I'm so glad I found Su Shan. Su Shan told me that if I needed a toner touch-up she would do it free of charge if my highlights start to fade or change colors. Now, I don't know if I would actually take advantage of this generous offer, but it sure is great service. Now, the negatives.... When I got online and saw the prices for services at Starshine (before I went to the salon), I was expecting Starshine to be more of an upscale salon, like Art + Science or L'Etoile down the street. But Starshine is far from upscale. Don't get me wrong. There is great customer service and great talent, and there is a certain "energy" about the salon. But it seems to lack atmosphere, ambiance, and space. Also, there's no real pampering services offered there. Worse, the salon is right next door to CTO wedding bands/DJ, and you could hear the music constantly (at least while I was getting my hair done) and even feel the vibrations as the artists performed or rehearsed. So why did I give Starshine five stars? Because Su Shan has earned it. I've been to one "upscale" salon after another in search of a great stylist who would give me an amazing haircut and color but haven't found one until now. Su Shan is a very talented stylist who is obviously passionate about her work and takes pride in her work product, and that is what makes Starshine an awesome awesome place to get your hair done. Expect quality; just don't expect any bells and whistles. read more

Su-Shan was wonderful for doing the hair and make up for my wedding. She let me do two hair trials and make sure she made everything perfect for me. She went with whatever I wanted, even when I threw a hair crown at her to work with. I had the pleasure during the planning of my wedding of having Kristina and Grace cut my hair. Both wonderful ladies that took the time to style and curl my hair. Great place and such reasonable prices! read more

Grace is so warm and personable and just gave me the best haircut. Plus, the salon is inclusive to all people and I just love it.

I just started a TV show called Entre Nosotros on Comcast53 and Fios21. I needed a new look and Starshine made it happen. Great people and great place - I highly recommend Starshine Salon read more

I been a regular client of Erica for 6 years now. When I first met Erica she was working in the basement of her home(i missed that place). I remember all the cutest Marilyn Monroe picture frames. When I first met her I was a bit afraid to let another person touch my hair and ruin it. I have curly hair, and at the time when I met her my curls were dead. I never trusted anyone with my hair so I always did my hair. I was using the flatiron so much it killed my curls. But once I met Erica and explain to her my issue Erica worked her magic. She explain to me in details what was going on with my hair and what will work best for it. So I sat in her chair and she did what a real stylist will do. Once she was done with my hair, my hair felt so natural again. Months went by and I kept coming to her. Those months of me going back to her kept my curls in check. And 6 years later my curls are beautiful again and my hair is absolutely healthy. Also, I never, never dye my hair. I decided to add some peekaboo highlights to the front of my hair. I voiced my anxiety about such a big change to Erica and she heard me and talked me through the entire process! She made sure that I knew that where I wanted to be is going to take a few visits, because my hair was dark and blond on dark hair take some touch up. Once again I trusted Erica and she did an amazing job and my peekaboo highlights are still on my hair and I haven't had any issue with them. Now, let's talk about makeup. Erica is the best of the best when it comes to makeup. She is phenomenal. She really brings out your best features without feeling like you have a ton of makeup on. I recommend her to anyone I know and they never regret going to her. . She such a sweet heart and nice person to talk to. But I do recommend that you booked your appointment with her in advance. She books fast. That's how good of a stylist she is. Furthermore, as for the salon well it's a comfortable place to be at. Is not big but is nice and good enough for the client and the stylist to have their space. They offer coffee and water while your wait. read more

This salon has an online booking system that does not communicate with the actual salon. I made an online appt and have the confirmation email, yet when my daughter arrived we were told " we do not have an appointment for you . we have an online booking System that we pay for that does not always talk to our system so it does not always work " In my opinion , if you know your system does not work --- Fix it or get a new one !!! We went down the road to a much nicer salon with very professional staff and they were kind enough to squeeze us in!! We just moved to the area and I'm glad that things turned out like they did and we have An amazing new hairdresser:). No thanks to star shine read more

I had to go elsewhere for a haircut while Starshine Salon was not booking any new appointments. The haircut at the other place was really not what I had wanted. Then I saw that Starshine Salon had a new stylist, Megan Menk, who was accepting appointments, so I decided to give it a try. Megan completely fixed the haircut I didn't like! She is obviously very experienced and did a terrific job. She is also warm and fun to talk to. read more

I finally got around to finding a hairstylist after moving out here a while ago, and I'm SO glad I did. I got my hair cut by Grace and she's amazing! She really listened to what I was looking for and explained to me her thoughts, showed me how much she would be taking off and asked if I liked how it was going throughout the way. My hair looks and feels SO good right now! I will definitely be coming back to see Grace for regular cuts going forward. This place is a total gem!!! read more

I absolutely love this salon. my first consultation with Erica was exceptional and very informative. I had the dream catchers extensions installed in March and I visit her ever 5-6 weeks for maintenance. The hair and the upkeep of the hair is expensive but it's definitely worth it because with the right maintenance and right hair stylist this hair can last for over a year. Erica is very accommodating especially when having to reschedule an appointment. Her charm and bubbly personality definitely won me over from the first time we met and I am so glad to have her as my hair stylist. Her work I've seen on her instagram is amazing. She's just an awesome person and makes the salon a great place for business. read more

I've always been a cheap ass when it comes to my hair, and the results showed. I finally took the plunge and went to see Su-Shan last week... And now I am beating myself up for waiting so long to get there! I am absolutely and totally thrilled with how my hair turned out! I was not only treated with respect and kindness, but I got a great "education" from Su-Shan as well! For as long as she has the salon, I will be a loyal customer! Not only is this the best salon I've been to, but it is also quite reasonable for all of the services I received! I am so grateful to Su-Shan and Starshine Salon! read more

I was excited to get my hair cut here given the multiple glowing reviews, but my experience was just alright. I scheduled an appointment at 4pm with Kristina, and I guess there wasn't enough of a buffer in between clients because I ended up waiting for 20 minutes past 4pm. I don't mind waiting for a few minutes while the hairdresser finishes up her client, but 20 minutes is a pretty long time. Kristina was nice and she cut my hair well, but I didn't necessarily feel like the overall service was reflective of the $50 haircut price. It was clear to me that Starshine does keep track of their clients' needs and hair condition, so I think they do care for you and your hair. read more

I hadn't had my hair cut professionally (had friends doing it) for over a year and a half. I made an appointment online which was super easy. I've been going to Starshine for probably 2 years and it is the best. Both Su-Shan and Grace are so awesome to work with. I desperately needed a haircut and color so I took the plunge and bought a groupon. It's pretty scary when you do that but I figure hair grows so what the heck. All I can say is WOW with capitals! My hair certainly was a challenge, but I will be going back to Su Shan. She is extremely knowledgeable and carries with her over 14 years of experience including very high end salon management. I love this salon! I went to Starshine for a color correction since I had been to a different salon about a month ago for an ombre. I ended up leaving the salon with a color that looked more like highlights because they brought the bleach so high up. The color was no where near what I asked for (it was way lighter, holder/brassier than what I wanted). Not to mention I have a caramel skin complexion-which means not all blondes work for me-this was one of those cases. I walked around feeling so uncomfortable for weeks and I paid so much money. I did some research and one of my friend's recommended Erica at Starshine. She saved my life! She brought the color down and made it look like an actual ombre, as well as added some layers to my once-upon-a time-long bob. I paid way less for the layers, color correction, and blow dry styling than the awful attempt at an ombre I got at the other salon. I am so so happy now all thanks to Erica. Oh btw she finished all of that in about an hour and a half which is super quick considering I have so much hair. (Usually takes almost an hour just to blow dry my hair) definitely recommend this salon to anyone especially if you want a well done ombre and hair cut. read more

Overall I really liked my experience here. Could use a bit of improvement, but I'd still go back. I'll start with the the not so good: You probably won't reach them to schedule an appointment on the first try. You'll have to leave a message and wait for a call back. I left a message mid-day Saturday and got a call back on Monday. As a rule, I dislike having to chase people down and more or less schedule an appointment to schedule an appointment to give them my money. On the day of my appointment: When I first walked in, it was a little weird. There were no other customers in the salon and two people were talking to each other. One of them said "Hi" to me but I wasn't sure if it was a customer or a stylist or what. They didn't tell me to have a seat or anything, they just went back to talking. I sat myself down, but since I didn't know who the two were, I didn't know if anyone was aware i was there and waiting for my appointment. Given the small size of the place, it was an uncomfortable first impression. After a few minutes I just stood up and went over to them and stood there until they acknowledged me. Turns out they were both stylists. Pretty weird that they ignored me for so long with no other customers in the place. The good: I had Sergio as a stylist and he was super friendly and easy to talk to. He took his time and listened to what I was looking for and overall I'm happy with the cut he gave me. I think the thing I liked most is that he gave me advice on how to keep up the look at home. Nothing about this place or the stylists felt artificial like pretty much every other salon I've been to. Sergio seemed genuinely passionate about the trade, which made me feel I was in good hands. Overall, bad first impression but great overall experience. What they lack in reception, they make up for in skill. 5 minutes of weirdness but an hour and a half of excellent hair care. read more

After 22 years of salon hopping, I have found a stylist who knows how to do my hair perfectly :D. Su Shan is sweet, smart, and totally ace at cutting and coloring. I came in asking for cherry coke-red color and she nailed it; When walking back to my car after my appointment, I was stopped by three different women asking who did my color... Yes, really, Su Shan is that good! A month later, my color is still fade-free and the hair compliments keep rolling in. read more

I'm not the kind of girl who gets her hair done a lot. In fact, it had been over a year since I last had it cut. I knew it needed to be cut, so I yelped around to see where might be a good place to go. This place seemed to be top of the list, so I went with it. They also offered a yelp deal. I got my hair cut by Su Shan. Beyond getting a really nice healthy hair cut, I felt like Su was someone I could talk with. She's super down to earth and friendly and funny and I just love her. I'm going to actually get my hair cut on the regular now because I like this place so much.
