The trailhead is located across from the park office. The Honeybee Trails aren't too strenuous or hilly, but you won't see the lake (there is a longer trail around its perimeter, about seven and a half miles). The main park road was a little difficult for us to find (GPS took us to a back entrance which was closed) so if you end up on Agency just make sure to take the right turn if you want to find the beach and park office (which is off of Racine). There also wasn't any signage for the park until we were right at the Agency Road entrance. The drive was well worth the visit, though.

I will give you the Spark Notes version; it was created as a shortcut for horses to traverse down the hill to Main Street. This place has been on my list for awhile now and on a beautiful August day, I finally made the trek up to see it. It was not quite what I expected, which is a good thing. The alley itself is rather short, but if you make the walk down and up it, you'll feel it in your legs. The alley is lined with houses on one side, which has to make for a very interesting living arrangement. I figured the road was closed for vehicle traffic, but was I wrong! You can apparently drive down the path... which I did. Driving down it was almost like being on a roller coaster, in your own car. The windy paths and sharp turns were super fun and gets your adrenaline going. At the bottom, there is a chance to bottom out as you pull out into normal traffic, so be careful if you do take the fun plunge. Luckily, if you are not a fan of snakes or the video game Metal Gear Solid, you can happily visit Snake Alley. If you are a fan of odd things and fun car rides, Snake Alley is the place for you.

I pulled up the Yelp app to find a park to explore and voila, there was Vander Veer Botanical Park. It was a toasty 93 degree day so we were quickly drawn to the plentiful shaded spaces found throughout this large park. In addition to a botanical garden (which we didn't visit specifically), they also have a rose garden, small pond with a fountain, long shaded promenade, and plentiful paved paths for walking. We strolled through the rose garden and then were naturally drawn to the long shaded walkway that leads up to a large and entertaining fountain at the end. This park has so many lovely uses for varying audiences and interests. Highly recommend giving it a visit if you find yourself in the Quad Cities!

The A campground has a shower house and B does not and is further within the park. There is also tent camping further inside B. It's quiet. It's serene. The color changes were beautiful everywhere. We came late and the campground host came around the next morning and wanted to check us in of course. We obliged and were left to it. There are trails. There is massive fishing. I just discovered a driving range, $3 a bucket, bring your own clubs. A giant soccer area. tennis courts. Outdoor fitness equipment. Softball fields. Frisbee golf - which looks incredibly hard for some holes. I think I remember seeing volleyball nets somewhere. Oh and what draws me is the running path that goes over the interstate to the high school on the other side and beyond. I do miss the apple trees. We used to collect them and press them and make cider. I know you can also rent the gazebos for parties through the parks and rec division. Lots of open green space!

Weekends are busier, but during the week the activities and numbers of people are sparse. Brighton is four miles away with a Dollar General. Washington is next with a Hy-Vee going into town and a WalMart at the other end. Also a beautiful YMCA if you want to exercise. Casey's at each end of town if you need a pizza. We love Lake Darling!
