I remember the Starlings of Brighton fondly. Before the West Pier went up in flames, this used to be their permanent resisdence. One drunken night a few of us decided to have a covert mission onto the pier and it was an interesting experience, hearing a multitude of resting starlings roosting in the old ballroom amid a LOT of bird droppings!
Since the pier's demise, it is nice to see that the birds still flock to the area. Trust me, if you are around the beach at dusk make sure that you bring a camera. You will see literally hundreds of the birds performing in the sky. I'm not sure where they hibernate/roost these days, but I guess that Brighton has become their genetic winter residence. Just as the summer tourists seem to leave Brighton, the winter residents appear. In my opinion, they will always be welcome squatters! read more
