Since I began bowling seriously in the 1980's, Star Pro shop (George) had a reputation of having the best "driller" in the Chicagoland area. Nothing is more important than your "release". George would look at your wear pattern and do his measurements as close to perfect so that it comes off smoothly. When I got better I opted for pro shops where I bowled. Struggled with my release on most of those. Went back to "Star". George retired and sold to one of his employees (Lee?). He re-drilled a ball and my average jumped 5+ pins. I think Lee sold a few years later to few of his employees. They all have the same training and craftsmanship. They are one of the best in the area. I had my kids and now my grandkids will have balls recommended and drilled by Star. Its worth the drive. read more

Can't say enough good things about the pro shop. My son and I both got fitted for bowling balls here and they couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. Not knowing anything about bowling, I was worried I'd feel stupid, but they were so incredibly nice about it all. Selection and value were very good as well. I've been coming here for almost 10 years. They are great when it comes to ordering your trophies/awards. They have a nice selection and they can customize it for you if needed at no extra cost. If you're a reoccurring customer like us, they have you on file which is nice. They are accommodating and I believe they are family owned, not related to Stardust Bowl next door. The place looks a bit out dated like in the 80's, you feel like you're going back in time. Back in the days when we were bowling, we would get our bowling balls here and fitted as well. They have a nice selection and I believe they also have a ordering catalog if you don't see any that you liked displayed. They also buy and sell used bowling balls as well. Couldn't agree with @Maria's review more. I walked in to the store and was met by a thin employee wearing a black hat who snarled "What do you need?" When I said that I needed a ball drilled, he asked if I had a ball to compare it with. I had one at home but it was not mine and noted that I wanted it measured. He snapped back that "it's not the way to do it. Come back with it." I again said that I wanted to get my hand measured and he said it's not the way we do it. I went to leave and told him I'll go elsewhere instead, which he replied "I can do it." Steer clear of this Pro Shop. The employees that watched this happen did nothing to step in or respond, so clearly this is a normal thing. I wanted to believe the review was wrong from two years, but it was accurate to every detail for my experience. Nothing has changed. read more

Recently switched to Star Pro Shop from my previous pro shop and couldn't be happier. Tim was recommended by a friend of mine, and I am fairly new to bowling but very serious about it. Tim helped me with my Storm Crux Prime, Fever pitch and Roto Grip Idol pearl. He also corrected the drilling for my Storm Ice Storm spareball that was drilled somewhere else. He explained terms that more season bowlers would know and asked me questions about my game that otherwise I would be oblivious to. They are great here, maybe too great! I will explain: I haven't bowled in many years and decided to do it again with my wife. I was a customer over 20 years ago... After getting fitted last week, she was frustrated yesterday with 6 gutters in a row! She swore the ball was too heavy. After meeting with Lynn, he assured her the ball was not too heavy, all she needed was a wrist brace. Luckily I had filmed a few of her frames and showed them to Lynn. He slowed down the video and took time to analyze what she was doing wrong. He took 10 minutes to show her and gave some tips. Bottom line...she ended up beating me! Lol! Best pro shop in the state without a doubt. First of all, they have one of the largest selection of bowling balls anywhere. All prices are reasonable. They have some of the most intelligent staff. These guys are equipped to answer questions for both beginners and experts. They assisted me in finding my ball and the choice I made as a result was perfect for me. And finally best of all, they stand behind their purchases. I have gone in twice in 6 weeks after my purchase to make corrections and they were done no questions asked. They didn't collect any money on those corrections even though I'm the one that specifically asked for my ball to be shine...only to go back and ask they they dull the ball. I'm a straight bowler. Wanted a custom ball just for fun. Lynn sized me up. Had my ball drilled in about 20 minutes. Adjusted the thumb hole sizing afterwards for a bit. First time I rolled the ball I got a Strike. Everything feels great. Will go back again when I'm ready to hook the ball. They have consistent hours like a regular business unlike the other Pro Shops. It's worth the drive. Go for the Alley also - it's huge at 84 lanes. read more

Huge shout out to Lynn and Tim. These guys go above and beyond for my kids, Caleb and Logan. If it wasnt for them, they wouldnt be where they are at today. Caleb (12)has won the Top gun tournament and has a high game of 214 only after 1.5 years of bowling. Logan (8) has won the Top gun also, Won the Doubles tournament, got 3rd at state in singles and just today got 5th at Pepsi state championship. high game of 199. This is by far the best pro shop! So I came here when I was (1) recommended by a friend and (2) was having many problems with my finger. The staff there (Lynn) were very helpful and immediately realized the problem that was wrong my bowling balls. I needed them fixed pretty fast and they had them fixed and plugged within a day. I always like Star Pro Shop and Lynn is one of the best driller that I encounter in my whole bowling career that expanded 20 years. BUT today's experience with one of his staff was nothing short of reverse discrimination. The moment I walked in and less than 20 seconds into the store, a young man of possibly asian decent and skinny started to ask questions with such an aggressive behavior and tone that I couldn't even get anything out of my mouth. "What do you want?" What are you bowling right now? You gotta give me something, you want a ball that hooks more or what!?!" (with that annoyed face of his) As confused as I am with his demeanor I politely told him, I'm just looking around right now and I'm not a new bowler - he immediately said, I will go in the back then and left! I left that place very disappointed and I have never been treated like that walking into establishment that I will be spending my hard earned money like that. I will never go back to that pro-shop ever again. Very disappointing and I hope Lynn do something about his staff. Bad Customer Service and bad for the company. read more

I also reviewed the pro shop with the alley review but also want to give them their own. They have been very helpful to me, a beginner with little money to spend. First I came in with used ball pretty light weight that I got for free, they re-drilled it, I used it for one season of league play. People told me I should be using a heavier ball. So I found some at the lanes and tried them. all too heavy. So I found one that was heavier than what I got but lighter than anything at the alley that fit my hand at a used store, I had that used ball holes filled and re-drilled don't remember the exact price but I felt pretty reasonable. I even asked about new balls, they asked about my hook a bit about my style and so on. The guy said the used ball I had was a decent ball, and at my skill level and style the less expensive balls would fit the bill. he went on to explain coatings and cores and stuff... SO I used the ball I had and felt it was a bit tight around the thumb. I went back and explained how it felt, they adjusted it a bit at no charge. The nice gentleman went on to explain how alcohol affects hand swelling and how my fingers are kind of short and big around, all with out calling me a fat drunk, like I probably would have done. I bought my shoes there got a good deal on last years style. I believe they steered me in the right direction of keeping things at a reasonable cost when I clearly was looking to spend money. That attitude is why my woman bought her new ball there, she was willing to spend more money but they guided her to something that was reasonable. We feel this place is a great value. read more

I had a new ball that needed to be drilled so I came to this Pro Shop that is next to Stardust Bowl. The guy that worked there was very helpful with measuring my hand so that I would have the perfect fit. The drilling only took a few minutes and was reasonably priced. I was also told that if my fingers swell, that I can always bring the ball back and they will re-drill for free. The store also had an assortment of men's/women's shoes as well as bags and accessories. read more

First time in this pro shop and alley. I had explained my experience with a ball that I felt was too heavy and didn't feel right. (Thumb swelling after only three frames) They had a very nice selection of every type on the wall. I went with an ebonite. No pressure sales, and then a fitting for drilling that was very good. Amazing that after getting the right fit and some pro tips. I bowled later that night. I was able to bowl 4 games without swelling of my thumb and immediately increased my average by 25 pins. Just bought a ball today and had great service. Walked in at 3pm was out by 3:45 on a Saturday. Really nice guy, unfortunately I can't remember his name, measured my custom grip in minutes. He narrowed down my style to a nice ball in my price range. I'm really happy with my whole experience. I wish I lived closer to play on the massive 84 lane alley more often.
