I like poking around Staples. They sell office supplies. This location is in the Fairlawn Plaza, across the street from Carlingwood Mall. My most recent visit was for a new computer chair. They have floor models so I wanted to sit in a few to see which was most comfortable. I finally decided on one and advised one of the salespeople which one I wanted to purchase. He took a picture of the tag and said he will check to see if it's in stock. After a while he came back and said they had 3 in stock and so he will retrieve one for me. I saw him climb onto that machine that raises them up so they can access the storage areas near the ceiling. I was pleased to see he strapped himself in (I'm sure their health and safety department is also pleased). I saw him checking several different storage areas. Then I heard him ask another colleague for help. Finally he came back and said there is an error with their inventory system because it doesn't appear that they have any left. He listed some nearby stores that had them, but I wasn't convinced they actually had them and didn't want to make the trip. I'm sure he sensed that, because he offered to order it online for me and get it shipped to my house (free shipping). I can order it myself online at home, but I figured maybe if he did it he'd get some sort of commission, and he already put in so much effort to help me, so I was like ok, sure. He goes to the computer and tries to add the chair to the cart and the system freezes. He tries a few times without success. By that time I was at the store for much longer than I expected or wanted to be. I thanked him for his efforts and said it was ok, I'll just order it at home later. Lol. So 5 stars for the guy who helped me and A for effort for him, but 2 stars for a faulty inventory system and slow/frozen online ordering system. Incidentally, I also really dislike their website, as when you search for things it lists items that are sold out and you can't filter for only available items. I realize their website and systems are not store-specific but rather corporate. However, these issues affect customers' experiences and opinions of the business. I do like Staples in general and would rate them 3 stars overall, but the customer service at this location bumps it up to 4. I also like that there's a washroom at the back of the store. These days I get so much hand sanitizer build up on my hands that it's nice to use some good old fashioned soap and water sometimes. There's lots of free parking in the plaza. read more

I ordered 2 quick order office stamps and paid extra for one day service. When I arrived to pick them up I was given one stamp at pickup. I had to persistantly repeat myself for 15 minutes to have the person I was dealing treat my like I knew what I ordered and what it had cost before he finally listened to me and his neurons kicked in. Then he said the other stamp would be ready in a week. Really, I paid extra to have two stamps in 24 hours. So he obviously was not looking at what type and service I had paid for and he really did not care if he satisfied his customeror treated them with respect. He somehow thinks that after 15 minutes, I should not have been exasperated and raised my voice so he would finally stop talking and belittleing me and think and consider that i knew what I ordered and what it should cost and what was missing. Today I went to pick up a printer I had order on line at 4:40 pm and that i had received confirmation of order at 7:40 am and when I arrived I called for pickup and spent 10 minutes trying to spell my name and they still could not find the order and the girl helping me called me sullisomething. She could have put me on hold so I did not have to listen to her bastardizing my name. I told her I ordered a printer but she never went and looked in the area where printers are. I would have gone in initially but my mask broke. Finally I went in and they gave me a mask and it took 1 minute for the guy above to find my printer. Then he proceeded to tell me I had barked at him before and then the person calling me sullisomething. I ended up leaving the store with the printer in a hurry because I was so fed up. Dangerous for me because I could have fallen and if i damage my knee again I will lose my leg. Yeah well for a $300 printer and premium price quick service stamps their service is atroucious and their treatment of customers is substandard.. Maybe I would not bark like my cocker spaniel if they behaved professionally and intelligently and listened to their customers. Buy Basic supplies there but do not order to pick up there. I am done with them. I will order paper and cartridges from amazon and printers from another supplier who is cheaper. Everyone at that store is deaf and the treat their customers like they are stupid. read more

I took my mother (75) to purchase a screen saver for her laptop. Found one and took it to the customer Tech support desk to ask if they could put it on for her. We were told that for 25 dollars yes, it was possible. The screen saver itself was under 50 dollars and I explained that this had been done for me as a free service at a Staples Store in Guelph, ON. The reply was that this was not possible as in past experiences too many customers got upset with screen placement (bubbles). My frustration was not that this wasn't a free service but that it was doable for the 25 dollar price. It was like, " Sorry, we don't do that here" and " Yes, for 25 dollars, we will do that for you." Disappointed with the customer care. read more

Within the last 1/2 hour I phoned Staples on Carling Ave to ask if they had mailing tubes that would accommodate a 40 inch item. First the person in office supplies spoke so quickly I could not understand much of what he was saying as he just rattled on. When I asked him to repeat the description he told me to just come into the store to look at them myself. I am a senior who would have to ask someone to accompany me. Furthermore as I was intending to purchase at least 10 tubes, I did not want to make the trip for one or two which might not be long enough. I'm slightly obsessed with office supplies, and have been since I was a kid and got to pick our school supplies. Post-it notes, pens, file folders, agendas - AH! It's all so fun and full of promise. I feel very lucky (or perhaps it's actually bad...bad for my wallet!) that this location is so close by. Fauve G and I have come here many a time for things (she bought her office chair here for a steal!), but the past month or so I spent a ton of time here getting things ready for Ottawa's yelper party. They have a great printing area with the most amazingly helpful staff. I had to print several posters and signs, and wanted a nice quality instead of printing them on my own at home. I realized a little too late that my frames weren't a standard size, and so spent about 20 minutes using their paper trimmer to get them just right. The quality was perfect, and the staff members checked on me and answered any questions I had (like why can't I print this massive file onto this dimension of paper, haha). One thing I also love that Staples has been promoting is that they carry a bunch of stuff for small businesses, like water, cleaning supplies, and more. They actually have great prices as well, and their sales are awesome. I'm generally not a huge fan of Staples stores, because I find the staff aren't always helpful.
