The single most difficult and uncooperative county government I've ever worked with! The Estates…read moreDivision will not answer your legitimate questions BEFORE you file an estate and is constantly looking for the smallest incidental reason to reject a filing once you present it. They require very specific language in a filing that is not required by other North Carolina Clerks. So you will make a filing, it will be rejected for knit-picking reasons by one employee, you will address all of THAT person's concerns, then it will be rejected by another employee for different knit-picking reasons. Mind you, I've been filing estates for 20 years so I know how to open an estate. According to someone who works on a daily basis with the Cumberland Clerk's office, NOTHING ever goes right with this place. Mostly due to their eccentric lack of helpfulness and their obscure make-it-up-as-you-go "requirements." They also have the weirdest phone system: ALL calls are directed to the phone of a single woman who rarely answers her phone and "forgets" to relay your messages to the staff. If she transfers you to the phone of one of the deputy clerks, they NEVER return your calls. So you have to call several times to break through the wall. IF at all. I guess there is not enough going on in Fayetteville so they entertain themselves by rejecting filings and tripling your time the expenses incurred in filing a document. Hostile and passive aggressive. They forget they are affecting the very real lives of the grieving and making the experience worse.

Cabarrus County Courthouse definitely needs an update--and thank goodness, plans for a new…read morecourthouse have already been developed. The issue is really with space. There are six courtrooms, only two with a decent amount of space. On certain days, like traffic administration court, there are over 1000 people on the docket for one court room. And that does not include the entourage most people bring along...their kids, their significant others, their brother-in-law's cousin who took a criminal justice class through Phoenix University and just looooves Law & Order SVU. People overflow into the lobby and adjacent hallways, loitering around and being noisy. The Assistant District Attorneys have developed a great system, and they do their best to maintain order in the face of chaos, but it is no easy task. Additionally, courthouse security, provided by the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, only has one metal detector. So there is one line, through which everyone except card-carrying employees must travel, and they require that people take off their belts, jackets, and sometimes their shoes. As you can imagine, when you have hundreds of people coming to court at the same time, you can have people lined up all the way through the front doors. The deputies do a nice job of moving people through efficiently while still being thorough and keeping everyone safe. Hopefully, you will have no need to come to the courthouse, but if you do, don't come on a Friday--just a tip.

The place is pretty easy to find and parkinng was definitely not the worst. The Good: This is the first time in my life when I went to a courthouse and it was a fairly enjoyable experience. Its spacious on the inside, well kept, secure, and modern. The most unexpected thing there was that everyone was really friendly and helpful. Not one person there from the security to the parking garage attendant seemed disgruntled. I went there to have my fingerprints taken and I had made an appointment online. Not only was the lady at the window and the lady who did my prints very friendly, but I was actually seen on time! Unbelievable. Friendly staff AND timely service at a government facility? That's new to me. If you have a choice of courthouses in the area, I would recommend this one. Plus some nice local shops are close by if yo u have to wait for someone or something, you can grab a nice coffee or whatever. The Bad: You have yo pay for parking. $2 for the first hour and $1 for every additional hour up to $10 max.
