The classes are small, a max of 8 kids, and the teacher's move from room to room, so students can focus on getting regulated and ready for the next subject, instead of packing up and having to move rooms in a hurry. They have movement breaks, where they walk around outside to get fresh air. The campus is in a wooded part of Lafayette that was so pleasant to drop him at every day. They follow the common core, so I knew he was getting the curriculum his peers were getting in public school, but in a calmer atmosphere with teachers who could support his focus and executive functioning. The material is adjusted for students that need more support or time to write responses to questions for example. The most unique part of their Middle School program is the ACCESS days where the kids went out into the community to practice things like public transportation, shopping, ordering in restaurants, etc. This grew his confidence in such cool ways. There is also sleepaway camp for two nights in the beginning of the school year. When he went for the first time, I was so nervous, but after that first year, I was able to help assure the new parents that their child will have a great time just like my child did. Other pros: He couldn't hide in a sea of 30 kids anymore; the teachers were paying attention! There was homework club after school staffed by the teachers so if he fell behind, he could get caught up. The parents were amazing, as friends and as resources! He felt comfortable being himself and made friends with some nice kids.

The school was willing to work with my son's adhd, dyslexia, and apraxia. It wasn't about specializing in a disability but specializing in children and molding the curriculum and environment to support them. During a trial day my son fell playing outside and I could see it hurt. I stood back and watched as the kids stopped the game and made sure he was ok and waited to resume until he could. There was no teasing but rather camaraderie and support. This is NLA. They sit and have hard conversations with the kids and teach them to be good humans. They teach executive functioning skills helping my son to learn to work independently and be responsible. They adjust as needed with academics to help kids soar and gain confidence. We no longer needed an IEP longer than anyone wanted to read, because they learned about my son. My son has never been rushed to speak. From field trips to daily class they intently listen to him and his stories with true interest. After years of many people pretending, he finally feels heard. They got to know him and what he needed. They saw him for who he was. He no longer had to fit in a box that didn't work. He presented an at home science electrical project in class instead of at the talent show because it's what worked. Again, he found success. We made the logistics that seemed difficult to be able to attend NLA work, and we are so glad we did. He has grown academically, socially, and emotionally. She loves the teachers at the school. They are trusted adults. She feels she can talk with them and ask for their advice. The teachers have a wide mix of backgrounds, so there are lots of points of views. This is so important as young adults start to pull away from the family and look for external role models. There is a feeling of trust between students and teachers. Parents are involved in the school. You will feel as if you have an extended family at this school (especially important as a single mom...many willing hands during an emergency!).

In our experience, the administration seemed much more focused on uniforms, skirt length, Mass, and rule-following than on whether students were actually being challenged. There are some genuinely good teachers there, and I don't want to take away from them, but overall the academics felt inconsistent. It also feels like the diocese does not invest enough in teacher pay to consistently attract and keep top talent. And unfortunately, that shows. I'll also just say that the overall leadership of the parish/school gave us an uncomfortable feeling at times. The pastor in particular gave off a strange vibe that made the environment feel less warm and welcoming than we had hoped. For what families pay, I expected St. Perpetua to feel meaningfully stronger than the public school option. For us, it didn't.

We found that in 2019, the triad existed. It was wonderful!! We really felt welcomed, our kids were cared about, and we quickly settled. Fast forward...COVID. That spring was a disaster - no two ways about it. No one to blame at all. In the fall of 2020, we quickly noticed a distinct shift in staff attitude, and the school's overall mood changed. Suddenly, things that were "no big deal" became huge deals. We felt like we were constantly "in trouble" for some unrecognized infraction. By 2021, fall, I recognized what went wrong (likely). The administration's response to COVID and the public school shutdown was to allow over-enrollment at St. P. We went from 15 -23 students per classroom to over 30 with one upper grade at 38. So, in short - we were paying a premium for a crappy public school experience! YAY US. Within a year: The support staff for "student success" left or went very part-time. We were suddenly getting calls from other parents asking for our thoughts on how we felt about the school, the principal, and certain teachers. Then, the Principal, an office staffer in charge of admissions, and the parish padre - all retired or left the building. We began to look elsewhere. Nothing is perfect, however, when a solidly performing educational program changes so significantly that its change negatively impacts students and their opportunities - one has to walk away.

But it did seem to create some togetherness with us kids in a school where everyone basically hated each other and years later I still know a bit about what happened to a few of them. The best was when after speaking to a friend of mine I found out she knew one of them, Josh, who I hadn't spoken to in at least 6 years if not more. I told her the story of when the W.C.I. YMCA kids all went to Old Sac and bought fake "cigarettes." Josh and a couple others were kicked out of Carl's Jr for "smoking" and for the rest of the year I harassed him about it. Getting him on the phone more than 6 years later, the first thing she asked was, "So I hear you got kicked out of a Carl's Jr for smoking?!" To which he shockingly asked back, "Meg?" Ahh memories.

Theirs sexual harassment all the times and their camera don't work when you need them, my friends have been grabbed by the chest multiple times by boys in hallways. There are kids I know who have PAID the school to not get expelled for their misbehavior, the subjects and way they teach is long and doesn't end up with much progress. Don't even start me on PE, they are 100% ableist, and Pe teachers would deny kids medical exemption, even if you have a medical note saying you can't do PE they dock your grade for not participating. They used to make kids do the pacer which is were you run back and forth 150 times on a basketball court everyweek but stopped becuase kids started getting health issues. This school is horrible. Not to mention drama and fights are common occurrences.

It's conveniently located off the freeway and very easy to find. After all, it is only 3 exits away from our house. I love that there are lots of trees surrounding the area, with beautiful blossoms. Early morning air is nice and refreshing. Might even convince myself to come out and take a nice stroll someday, which I rarely do. So good luck to me on that thought... Parking lot can get a little crowded when there are a lot of parents here to watch their kids play, but there is also street parking available. The people in charge of the tennis tournaments are good and fair. Unfortunately, seating arrangements aren't as comfortable as one would like, but it's a kids' tournament...we're not expecting pro tennis treatment.
