Switched all my banking over to Vinton County National Bank from Merchant's National Bank. I dealt…read morewith 2 people, Chad Meadows for my home refinance, and Melissa Forte for my checking and savings accounts. Chad was able to get more done in 4-5 weeks than what my previous lender had done in 4.5 months. Melissa was very nice and professional while setting up my accounts for me. Would have given 5 stars had it not been for some issues with their online portal. It would not allow me to open my accounts online because their system said that I had failed their identification verification system and couldn't prove I was who I said I was.

My wife and I are buying a four wheeler today. She gave me a large dividend check to deposit in…read moreher 5/3 Bank account and wrote me a check to cash for $2500 from the same account. I presented the teller my drivers license and the debit card to the account to make the deposit and cash the check drawn off of this account. She took the check for deposit and entered it into the account and said then told me there was a fee to cash the second check. I said that was fine as the fee is supposed to be 1% or $2. She told me the fee was 20% of the check total and then demanded my social security number so she could create a profile for me. When I asked why, she said it was standard policy for people who cash checks at 5/3 Bank who do not have an account with them. When I refused, the teller leaned towards me and quietly told me "You can just go cash your check somewhere else then", and handed me my check, debit card, and drivers license. I didn't realize she was being rude until I left the building and sat down in my car. I can accept 5/3 Bank won't cash the check even though the teller tried to charge a 20% fee, but to have a teller lean into me, lower her voice and tell me I can just cash it somewhere else is just rude, especially since I just deposited several thousand dollars into my wife's account. I went back inside the bank to speak with the manager about my transaction interaction but there was another customer in her office, so I sat down in the waiting area until she was finished with the other customer. While I was waiting, the same teller called out to me across the lobby, telling me that she could help me. I declined her offer and told her I needed to speak with the manager and pointed to her office. She said she was busy, and I said that it was okay, I would wait. The teller asked me two more times if she could help me and then demanded to know what I wanted after telling her no for the third time. I told her I wanted to speak to her boss, and when she asked shy, I loudly quoted her closing statement to me from our transaction. The manager rushed out of her office and said she would speak with me after she was finished with the customers, then came out a second time to tell me she needed to clear her desk. When I entered her office, she had literally cleared her desk it was totally bare. I explained to the manager why I was angry about my negative interaction with her teller and she didn't appear to care about what I shared with her. She only addressed the alleged "profile" policy in detail stating it was a standard policy that has been effect for over a year. As a regular depositor to my wife's account I cash checks written to me drawn on 5/3 Bank accounts several times a week for the past four years, this is the first time they have brought up this policy. As far as the complaint about the teller, the manager told me she was sorry that I felt that the teller was being rude and then said I must have misunderstood what she was trying to say. The manager placated me and then spun my complaint so that I appeared to be the one a fault for the negative interaction. I realized I was being placated, told her she was placating me, and thanked her for her time knowing that she was not going to address her tellers behavior. The teller sat at the counter shaking her head, rolling her eyes, and whispering to the teller to her left while I was waiting to speak to the manager and during the time I was in her office. She cheerfully shouted out. "Have a nice day!", when I left. The policy the teller and the manager quoted was in effect for the last year is not a requirement nor is it a standard operations policy. I verified with 5/3 Corporate before writing this review. They did, however rationalize the action by stating I may have been acting suspicious. We have six accounts with 5/3 Bank if were solely up to me, I would have closed all six accounts instead of making a complaint to the manager.
