My son has been a part of Gracie Barra since June 2022. It is his favorite class. Coaches Eric and Sierra are amazing coaches. So patient with the younger kids. It's definitely not easy to teach such young kids when they're have a hard time sitting still, but they somehow make it work. They promote discipline well as listening skills and the ability to follow directions. It's a great way to get exercise but also learn beginners self defense. They make the classes a lot of fun for these younger kids. If you have any kids this is the school I would highly suggest. I can personally say we will be with the school for a very long time to come it is well worth the money. This year my son went to his 1st Jujitsu tournament with the help of his coaches during rhe entire tournament. What started out as a great experience for my son has turned around drastically. During a sparring…read moresession, a coach decided to call my son out "you can't just lay there" multiple times. He was going against a girl that was two belts higher and is very good at JJ. He was trying to get out of her guard. My son after the third time being called out in front of his peers got embarrassed. I could see his body language start to give up. So at water break I told him I know you're not just laying there but try something different. She eavesdropped on our convo and didn't agree and kinda shouted "I was just giving constructive criticism" from across the room. I have coached kids before and that's not how you do it. I expressed this and told her maybe say "hey try this, or do that" but wasn't heard. After practice we settled it, shook hands and said we would put it behind us. A week later we get a text that we aren't welcome any longer. We have been blocked and she will no longer communicate with us. I asked if I could bring my son by so she can explain why he's no longer welcome with honesty, because he witnessed everything, and she has declined to answer. One of her points was that women get a bad wrap in the JJ community. I told her I have daughters of my own and empower them everyday, and she rolled her eyes and laughed. Now that we are gone I can look back and notice a few things for people to know before signing up. They teach in Clearlake/Ukiah/and Windsor in one day. By the time they get to Windsor they look tired, are late a lot, and most of the time just look like they are going through the motions to be done with the day. My son started out not wanting to go but ended up looking forward to it, making friends and being eager to learn. Bruno and Martel know their craft and helped my son progress in the span of 8 months. For an ego to get in the way of a good student and teammate has me very upset. My son's feeling will be hurt but we will put this behind us and go elsewhere.

It's kind of expected that you'll get "thrown to the wolves" when you start jiu jitsu as there are really no "basics/beginner course"; you just immerse and catch up eventually (unless you pay extra for personals). I appreciate that they see when someone needs help and they provide it, instead of leaving you lost and floundering. As for adults class, everyone is friendly and respectful. There are no women's classes (that's fine) and males and females are mixed in class but they do a great job with the culture to ensure the women don't feel intimidated. The female black belt instructors do an amazing job at putting new female students at ease. Everyone is so nice and respectful and I have not had any negative experiences. More emphasis on self-defense aspect here, which I appreciate. Very realistic. But they'll also get you competition-ready if that's your goal too.
