I have been terrified of the dentist for some time. Kind of like the car dealership, you have a go-between who talks billing and insurance with you away from the nurse and dentist. It's discrete and comfortable without pressure. My nurse (dental hygienist) was Susan? Or Sandy? God she was an angel. She was so kind to me breaking down and upset and in pain. She made me feel so comfortable talking about stuff and offering anything I might need. My dentist was Dr Taylor who was incredibly knowledgeable and proficient. I got out what needed to come out and I even scheduled an appointment for regular maintenance later this month. I was made comfortable to be there, whether I needed nitrous or a valium, either are available. And they make sure you are physically comfortable with numbing. Mentally comfortable is hard, but true kindness shines through in the folks who work there. I got a kids "reward" (shark plushie) to hold while I had my procedure. When I left I got a "goodie bag" with full instructions on what I had done, extra gauze, and an emergency card. It's a little hinky getting in with the road construction on witchduck road. But soon as your turn on Grayson, by the church, it's there. There's an employee entrance on the witchduck side and another saying Ste 200 on the side, even though the dentist is Ste 100, this is the door you go in.

Very pleased with the quality of care until last year when a staffing shortage had them cancel my regular check up and I have now gone a year with no check ups. Then I get an email that they won't accept my issurance any longer--so now I am back to square one--searching for medical care in VB which I seldom need but have generally found really hard as compared to my home state. Maybe it's a Virgina Beach thing the health care provider issue? Anyway CHECK TO see if they take your insurance before hand--it is a smaller, more personal practice with good no nonsense care--sad to have to leave and who knows in this town if I can find another provider? ( and we have good, expensive corporate health insurance!) Nice staff.

I am very familiar with text/ email reminders, or confirmations of medical appointments, but I have never experienced a policy like this one that literally cancels your appointment two days before. What if people are working or traveling and don't get the message until after 3pm? Also, maybe this was in the fine print, but I was never informed of such a ridiculous policy. I also don't appreciate the limited hours of operation. Maybe it works for a stay at home house wife, but for anyone running a business, or working long hours it's just not convenient, or practical. Another issue is that they require you to pay up front for services, and then you have to wait for your insurance to reimburse you. Another inconvenience. Finally, they have made a lot of investments in new technologies, such as the sonic cleaner and they require/ prefer for you to use the uncomfortable devices, even when you request hand scaling. At my last cleaning I asked the hygienist if she could just do hand scaling because the sonic device is uncomfortable and causes more TMJ pain. Her response was, "why don't we compromise and do half and half." It made me feel pressured to concede, and likely she is being pressured/ encouraged to use this device on patients. I'm sure Coastal Cosmetic Dentistry has plenty of business, and lots of 5 star reviews, but it's hard to imagine that I'm the only patient that's been put out by the items mentioned above. You might want to at least give your patients a heads up that you require a response two days before your scheduled appointment to keep the appointment.

Brittany, at the front desk, helped get my insurance straight and schedule my appointment. I had to reschedule because of insurance and she was so accommodating and helpful. When I went in for the appointment, Brittany was the first one to greet me with a smile on her face and she was just as pleasant as she was on the phone. Christina was my dental hygienist. She was phenomenal. She was gentle, explained every single thing she was going to do before doing it and talked with me to help me feel comfortable. She spent few minutes just getting to know me and didn't rush through anything. I told her I didn't enjoy going to the dentist and she encouraged me and told me I was in good hands. Dr. Vaughan was my dentist. She was so upbeat and thorough. They did 3d scans and x-rays and Christina gave a report on what was done before I was examined by the dentist. They worked well as a team. I had to get a deep clean with a laser and my insurance didn't cover it. Before anything was done, Brittany came in and went over what the cost would be and no one pressured me into anything. All the information was given to me and then I got to decide. This made me feel in control of my treatment plan. I went back a month later and they were happy with the progress I had made with my gums and were able to get me in right then to get a crown done due to a cancellation. Kylie from the front desk came and explained the cost and gave me the information to decide if I wanted to proceed with treatment and I did. Megan was the dental assistant that helped Dr. Vaughan. She was so calm and relaxed which helped me to relax. Her and Dr. Vaughan constantly checked to make sure I was okay during the procedure. I cannot say enough how much I appreciate Brittany, Kylie, Christina, Megan and Dr. Vaughan for making me feel so comfortable and helping make getting my teeth back to a healthy condition so much easier.

I used to love coming to the dentist (we all have our quirks, people!), until I had a bad experience at our prior dentist. I decided to give Smile By Design a go, and I love it (although I can't say I LOVE getting dental work done- I'm now a normal person that dreads the dentist). I've had filling removal & re-fills done, and I expressed my fear & anxiety to Dr. Santos, and she was so calm and patient with me during the entire procedure. That first experience I had with her made me feel totally comfortable and I trust her completely with my teeth. I think they do offer a lot of options, and some people are put off by that, but I'm gonna tell you- I bought that expensive Bluetooth toothbrush they offered me, and while the Bluetooth part is whatever (IMHO), my teeth have never felt better and my hygienist notices a difference in my teeth (which I totally believe!). My teeth feel like I just got a cleaning every single time I brush with it (which is nightly). Dr. Santos also suggested I get a soft night guard, and while my insurance doesn't cover that, I saved my pennies and got fitted for it. In summary, I do feel as though this dentistry has my teeth in their best interest, and I would recommend anyone going here! If you've had bad experiences at the dentist, be honest with them about it and I think they'll baby you like they baby me. We need it!

The dental assistant who took my X-rays (I'm assuming that's what it's called) came out to get me and was super kind and easy to talk to. She explained everything as we went and made sure I was comfortable the whole time. After the imaging, Dr. Hernandez came in and went over everything they found. I honestly don't remember ever having a dentist be that thorough. He took his time, explained things clearly, and made sure I understood what was going on and had all my questions answered. This was just the first visit--they'll do the cleaning and anything else at a follow-up--but overall, everyone there was wonderful. It's hard for me to even say this, but I'm actually looking forward to going back. I told my youngest son and his wife (who are local and looking for a dentist), and they are eager to be seen by Dr. Hernandez and his staff!

Well after getting there, they shot an additional x ray free of charge to see what was going on, and then decided I needed a filling instead of a crown- saving me about $500. The honestly coupled with the expertise go a long way. I'll make the drive to this dentist from here on out cause it's worth it.

Everyone seemed happy to be there, like they actually liked their jobs. And Dr. Horwitz was the BEST! He has the greatest bed side manner I've ever experienced. The whole time he was very pleasant and joked around. He made me feel at ease, which is nice when you're about to go under the drill. He was also very quick - 5 cavities in around an hour, when my old dentist would have done 4 cavities in 2 hours. I'll definitely be coming back if I can. And the rumors are true: they play great music!
