Flowers, I don't know so much about. What I do know is that the stems part of this Southside institution stocks lots of nice, colourful ones and has them set them out in a regimented manner which suggests the owners know the difference between a flower and a weed. They're one step ahead of me then. However, it was the stalks section which most appealed to me. With a fantastic range of fruit and veg, this place is a more modern take on Roots and Fruits, its West End equivalent, with less of the achingly-hip contrived hippy vibe. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, the music is upbeat and lively, adding to the unpretentious atmosphere, while the produce is reasonably priced and as fresh as it possibly can be. I particularly recommend checking out the wide range of fruit juices they have on offer. All this and not a dreadlock in sight. read more

I note the positive reviews on here, and I am glad others have had a good experience with this place, but; I was in here a few months back to order a buttonhole for a wedding. There were two members of staff on duty, one was busy with a customer (presumably the owner), the other was not. I tried in vain to get the attention of the non-occupied person to no avail, and stood. And stood. And stood. I eventually left 10 mins later and bought my buttonhole flower from the much friendlier and cheaper (£3.50 compared to £5) florist on Minard Rd. Manners cost nothing, a "i'll be with you in 5 minutes, take a seat" o something similar was all it would have took. Instead I was treated like nothing. Utterly ignorant, and shameful. I will NEVER buy anything ftom this place again. Avoid if you value good customer service. read more

Great wee shop, I love living round the corner from here. As well as a wide range of fresh fruit and veggies at really reasonable prices, they have all sorts of other goodies that mean I always spend more than I intend to. You can get everything from spices, coconut milk, organic peanut butter, lovely unusual bottles of juice, biscuits (chipotle chilli oatcakes are yummy!), cakes, a good range of cheese in the fridge (and an impressive selection of vegan things, which you don't see everywhere) and fresh bread every day. If you're just buying veggies, it's really reasonable price-wise, but if you splash out on some of the more unusual stuff it can become more expensive. However, the range of stuff is seriously good for such a small shop. read more

Ordered a bunch of flowers on valentines day for collection on the 15th. I phoned them up before placing the order to make sure it was fine to place an order - they said yes. I placed the order and went next day to collect and the owner told me that they'd rejected my order yesterday as they didn't have stock of certain items. I didn't receive any phone call , SMS or an email to confirm this cancellation. Needless to say I was really annoyed as I had placed an order with another florist in the past and they had the courtesy of phoning me to say they didn't have the required flowers but could do x, y and z instead. Waste of journey and don't know how to deal with customers. read more

Much more than your average fruit and flower shop, with one side selling the fanciest of flowers and the other selling a great selection of fruit and veg. I visited the fruit and vegetable side, where I was impressed by the great selection of fresh produce that you might not find at your average greengrocer. There is a homely feel to the place, with friendly staff and shelves full of groceries, herbs and spices that make this place a great one stop shop. read more

Top marks. Full stars. Fan-dabby-dozy. This is a pretty small fruit and veg shop (with a flower shop attached to it next door) but it manages to cram masses in. There is always an amazingly impressive range of fruit and veg whatever the time of year; from the basic apples and oranges stuff to the more exotic lyches and Chinese pears. Mmm. As Gavin mentioned they also stock some continental products such as various cheeses, breads and olives as well as more more unusual products. Furthermore, there are homemade and deliciously filling and suitably spicy samosas sold at the till (three for £1.50)! These come in a meat or veggie option and are great for a cheap, veg (and fat) filled snack that can be gobbled down cold or warmed in the microwave in under a minute. The prices for which are always better than the supermarket; as are the quality and portions too. Moreover, the staff are always very pleasant, quick and efficient; meaning that they never get flustered no matter how long the queue is. Absolutely amazing! read more

Stalks and Stems is both a top end florists, with a more personal touch than many of the other interflora outlets, and with some serious flowers- the lilies are gorgeous- and the place where I have purchased several house plants, in abortive attempts to liven up my front room with greenery. Unfortunately, my house is too cold for plants, and they have all died on me, but after a long time, and I blame myself and the bad central heating more than the shop. As florists, they offer personal services for everything from funerals through to romantic gifts, and are more than willing to spend time discussing the appropriate flowers: I don't feel intimidated when I ask for help here, or stupid (even if I am just on another hopelessly romantic mission...). Probably not quite as useful for a spontaneous purchase- it is not cheap, but elegant- they are a handy addition to Shawlands' High Street sophistication. read more

Cleverly named Stalks and Stems on Shawlands' Kilmarnock Road is really two shops; a grocer on the right hand side and a florist on the left. The owners clearly know their stalks from their stems as both shops stock only the best produce and are always busy. It is encouraging to see a number of independent food stores open up in the Shawlands. Clearly southsiders want to buy locally. I was surprised to see litre bottles of Irn Bru packed inbetween the tomato juice and home made lemonade. I guess even the most sophisticated grocers have to please the masses. read more

You can't beat a good old-fashioned greengrocer, and this one, with a florist tacked on the side as a bonus, is amongst the best I've been to in the whole city, never mind the South Side. Dishing up a good mix of fresh produce along with continental, and some more oddball varieties, it's a bustling little hive of activity, and doesn't bother with the over-the-top peace and love attitude that often turns stores like this into breeding grounds for the Make Poverty History brigade. The fruit in particular, is what always strikes me first about this shop, which looks, tastes and feels far more natural and untouched than the pesticide filled slop you'd find in a supermarket. I got a cracking bunch of blooms in the flower shop for E-Bot today as well, just a pound. Now that's shrewd business. read more

My wife's preferred shop for flowers, and thus the one I've been told (by her!) to use whenever I get her something. Staff are lovely on the phone and ensure they can do their best to create something exactly as you want it. If there's the possibility of an issue with the availability of a particular item, they'll suggest alternatives just in case. I've also had them offer ideas and suggestions when I've come to them with something ridiculously vague. The only issue is the lack of parking on the street at times, but there's residential (free) parking only 2 minutes walk away. read more

I just love Stalks and Stems, a grocery store and a florists rolled into one and it has a great name to boot! They have a huge selection of fruit and I purchased my first ever bag of gooseberries here and they were even nicer than I expected them to be. This place also came in handy for an emergency coconut I'd forgotten to buy during the weekly shop. As soon as you walk in you can see all the fresh fruit that's on offer and the delicious fresh fruity smell is very inviting. This shop my be quite small but it's crammed full of so many goodies that it's hard to resist trying something new. They have great spreads and pates and I've tried many of them as they're all so good on toast in the morning. I also noticed they have a small German section that stocks Sauerkraut and gherkins, yum! The florists next door smells just as good as the fruit section and the colours of the flowers are gorgeous. You can buy single flowers, mix and match your own selection, get a bouquet made to request or choose one of the ready made bunches. Last time I was here it was late afternoon and they had around 5 different buckets of beautiful flowers all reduced to £1. read more

A handy shop in the middle of Shawlands and very near Queens Park, they stock a good selection of fruit and veg and other fresh bits and pieces, ideal for the post work pop-in to pick up a few essential ingredients. An excellent small shop, catering for the fresh fruit and veg market, they also do plenty of sauces and spices etc for making your own curries. They also have some excellent fresh veg samosas on the counter to take-away, perfect for a snack on the walk home! Nice selection of fresh breads, dairy products in the fridges and loads and loads of sauces, pastes, flour, nuts, seeds, and pretty much anything edible that can be used for cooking! Stalks and stems is one of a dying breed - a local shop owned locally with local produce. Their offerings are excellent, if you want fresh fruit and veg this is an excellent option. An added bonus is the availability of spices and samosas behind the counter which can make for a lovely mid morning snack! The flowers here are also excellent, I've found that they tend to last longer than those purchased from the supermarkets. read more

As stated on UK government body Food and Health Safety standards: "Use by' is the required form of date mark for those foods which are highly perishable from a microbiological point of view and which are in consequence likely after a relatively short period to present a risk of food poisoning, and so relates to the safety of the food." Three times products I have bought from Stalks and Stems grocers have been foul by use by date. What is prompting me to write this review however, is the fact that a shop assistant told my daughter during her exchange of the used by product that "it had been reduced" and that was "why it had been on the shelf still." Is this person thick? Wouldnt an apology have sufficed, after my daughter had to travel 20 mins back to shop AFTER it was seen the product (from the fridge) was to be eaten 24 hours before? Instead, this person insinuates to her that because it was reduced by 40p it should be reasonable to still have it on the shelf?! Awful customer service and hopefully competition for business will heat up in future because once someone else opens a similar shop in Shawlands then Stalks and Stems will get their finger out and do what all shops do - stock rotation and WORK!!! read more
