It was a long, complicated journey from Bergen to Flam that took nearly six hours starting with the train, then being assigned to a bus, and finally cruising on a fjord boat. Luckily, the scenery did a lot to compensate for the complexities, and this brief stopover on the bus leg was an unexpected pleasure. Instead of stopping at a roadside rest area, we were left off at this atmospheric hotel for not only a coffee break but interesting historic antiques in the lobby and a beautiful view of the steep Naeroy Valley even as the fog threatened to blanket it all (photo: https://bit.ly/3DLAKYK). Jamie W. and I felt bad because the hotel was clearly short-staffed, and the woman running the gift shop was also fulfilling the coffee orders. Oh well, back to the bus. RELATED - Exploring Norway? Only God could provide such a wonderful view. This hotel captures that view in all the right ways. We stayed in a 3rd floor room with a Mountain View so we treasured the beauty even in the room. The hotel has an incredible buffet of high quality food. That being said, it is a VERY popular stop for lots of tour groups so don't expect a romantic or even quiet diner! And don't expect to enjoy the views alone - every tour bus, including public buses, stop by to let passengers go on-site to capture pictures of the view. Just the reality of having Gods creation at your fingertips. Down side: room is very dated somewhere in the 1950s-60s. Bathroom is small and the tub is quite dangerous with walls that are about 28" high and a VERY concaved tub bottom that makes standing challenging, even for the best skateboarder. The room also has no safe, iron, or TV. The hotel lobby is like a museum of awesome pieces from the area and a very large sitting/congregating area and a gift shop that has nice items made in Norway. Nothing around the hotel so if you don't want to eat there bring your own food before you get there.

So glad I booked this place because it was a nice break away from the stressful and crowded Norway in a Nutshell tour. It's a 2 mi / 45 min scenic walk to Flåm, where you can explore the small town that includes a free museum, some seafood places, a Coop grocery store, and a nice view of the head of a fjord. It's around $7 to take the Flamsbana from Håreina to Flåm. I would suggest walking to town and then taking the train back, or if you're up to it - walking both ways. This place is a great escape from tourists (and society, in general). It was so peaceful, tranquil, and completely unreal to be able to walk outside and read a book on a hammock with the cleanest air around me and the mountains as a backdrop. Our host was incredibly wonderful and sweet. She even fed us some of her homemade flat bread. She was considerate enough to send us a message saying that she wouldn't be in when we arrived, so she made arrangements for us to check in otherwise. The apt is so cute and was perfect for my girlfriend and myself. I think it'd be a great getaway for a small group or family of 4. The beds are queen-sized, and there's even a small kitchen if you ever want to cook your own meal. Plates, glasses, and eating utensils are provided. There was even tea bags, instant coffee, and a kettle for use. The laundry machine isn't very user friendly, but the user manual is provided. It definitely works, but can take a while. Linens and towels are not provided and can be rented. She just asks that you wash your dishes and throw out the garbage before you check out. Also! Her daughter has a forest cat that roams around the front of the apartments. She's sweet, friendly, and not afraid of people. Just a warning for those who are allergic.

Probably the best selection of all the hotels we stayed at in Norway, as it has the typical scrambled eggs bacon sausage and all that, but also a wide selection of Norwegian favorites, include smoked salmon, trout, and meats. Their smoothie was also very delicious! You also overlook the fjord from the dining area which is a big plus in the morning Though the common areas were nicely furnished and renovated, the rooms were on the older side. Still clean and functional though, but don't expect top of the line quality. One thing about the doors is that when you close them, the room door only auto locks after a set period of time. You can manually lock it by scanning the key card outside as well. Took us a bit to figure out.

It is an imposing large white building that can't be missed when leaving the train station. Checkin was quick and easy and the staff friendly. Our family room had two twin beds put together and a set of bunk beds. The beds were soft and comfortable with plenty of pillows. There was a desk, small wardrobe, sitting chair and shelves for suitcases. The bathroom had a heated floor and a mediocre shower at best. It was impossible to set a consistent water temperature and water pressure was low. No washcloths were provided either. We enjoyed a Christmas holiday buffet for dinner in their restaurant and also had the included breakfast there in the morning. There are commanding views of the fjord out the restaurant windows and I suppose rooms facing the front of the hotel as well. The staff working here were very helpful and friendly our entire visit. They also spoke English which made everything easy.

I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical of staying here because the word "hostel" conjures up images of my days as a 20 year old self, big rooms with 10 bunkbeds and lots of people and noise that prevents you from a good night's sleep, and shared bathrooms down a hallway. I guess it was good I came in with lackluster expectations, because I really loved this hostel and glad that I stayed here for 2 nights. In truth, I could have probably stayed here for 5 days or a week as Voss is super pretty, there's lots of things to do, and we had such a peaceful and relaxing stay. The location is great, just a 10-15 min walk from the train/bus station, so it's not very far to get downtown where all the food, restaurants, and bars are at. It's also right on the lake, and our room was a corner room with a lake view, and we were probably only 100 feet from the lake. The view was a million dollar view, and a better view than most fancy hotels in Hawaii I've stayed at. Obviously, the room is not Hawaii-fancy-hotel, but I wasn't expecting to get amenities from a $800 a night room in Hawaii in the $120 a night hostel in Voss. The check-in process was easy and painless, and the staff was nice and organized. They give you sheets to make your bed, and towels upon check-in, which is pretty standard for hostels. When you leave, you'll have to strip the bed and put the used sheets and towels in a bin at the end of the hallway. The room itself was nice - we opted for a private room with en-suite bathroom, which cost us $127 per night. It had 2 double bunk beds and one twin bed. The beds were pretty comfortable, so no complaints there, and it was quiet since we had a corner room, and also a beautiful view of the lake. The bathroom was tiny with one shower, a sink and toilet all in one room, so if you wanted to brush your teeth, go to the bathroom, and shower all the same time you basically could. Although it was small, it was clean and was just fine. My favorite part of the stay was the breakfast buffet, which was included in the cost of the stay, and easily worth about $20 per person. And if you have ever been in Norway, you'll know that the food is expensive (i.e. I had paid $10 for a piece of bread with smoked salmon and some egg on it, in Flam) so this breakfast buffet will seem like the best thing ever. It puts most American hotel breakfasts to shame, with fresh organic fruit and vegetables (some even from their own garden/farm), multiple types of bread, pickled fish, smoked salmon, eggs, cereal, coffee, homemade jams. And then you can eat outside with a magnificent view of the lake and it's amazing. They do not serve lunch or dinner, so plan accordingly. We also rented mountain bikes here (they were nice Scott bikes), you can rent for different amounts of time, so just ask. We did a full day rental and it was roughly $45 per person, but totally worth it, as we went around the lake twice - once in the morning and once in the evening because it was that pretty. It's around 14 miles around and I highly recommend doing this -- it was one of the highlights of my entire Europe trip. I'd definitely stay here again and have already recommended it to a few friends. One of the best hostel stays ever!

Because of the lack of king beds (queens only at this property) I decided to save a few bucks here and apply them to a splurge elsewhere. The motel-6 chic of the new section with tiny room , 2 cot-sized twin beds and balcony was perfectly fine for a one-night stay and to give us a bit of a rest from the 5-hours on the train from Oslo via Myrdal and Flam. As there is no AC, to cool the room one needs to leave the patio door open which was ok given the typically cool climate here. The room was in good shape and clean but very austere-more like a dorm room with older bath fixtures and small spaces. Don't expect the spa treatment here-just one all-purpose gel for body and hair and thin utilitarian towels. We also dined in the restaurant for dinner (there's not much else in "town") and were delighted with the 4-course, pre-fixed menu that include local foods and preparation. At $85/pp it was a bit pricey but hey-we saved on the room right? Because of the large size of the hotel you can expect to encounter so me large bus tour groups from china and elsewhere during your stay. A big plus is the hotels proximity to the dock where the ferry arrives-2min walk-and they have a bellman there to grab bags if you need help. I was a bit surprised when we arrived on the ferry (not a random occurrence) and made our way to the hotel along with 20 other guests, that we waited several minutes for any staff to appear to start the checkin process. Now, they did have all the keys ready so the process moved quickly.

"If I'm going to die of anything, it's going to be gluttony."…read more (Justin Timberlake) At the outbreak of WWI, frequent guest Kaiser Wilhelm II received his daily news from the comfort of the Kviknes Hotel, no doubt over some local beer and spirits. Lording majestically over Balestrand's harbor, the historic hotel was certainly fit for a king with its regal façade and stunning Sognefjord setting. In fact, throughout its history, the hotel has hosted many royals, celebs, emperors, and presidents. Book early to snag a room in the historic part of the hotel, rather than in the concrete addition. Wander throughout the building to feast your eyes on antiques, carved wooden furniture, and oil paintings, before feasting on dinner. ROCK THE BOAT: Most travel to town via bus or by the Norled express boat. The hotel is steps away from the ferry terminal. DINNER IS SERVED: One may eat at the Balholm Bar Bistro, or choose the famous smorgasbord, 4-course set menu, or order à la carte in the dining room. The dining room seats hundreds; reserve a table of two or more in the private attached room to avoid the chaos, and to enjoy window seats with views of the Sognefjord, as we did. I recommend trying the plum dessert wine or one of 300+ other available wines from the Bistro after dinner. BUT IT WILL COST YA: Approx. $75 US--this affords you the opportunity to sample various traditional dishes that you would otherwise miss out on. The only complaint we had was that some of the hot dishes were lukewarm. THE FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CLUB: Put on your Brad Pitt game face and prepare to battle a sea of rude, aggressive tour groups (other reviews have mentioned this as well). We attempted chess-like maneuvers to navigate the hostile food station area, but were checkmated by one particularly rude dude. He puffed his chest and threw his hands in the air for extra effect, challenging us for approaching the island in the opposite direction as him (plates were on both ends of the island). There were many of his species, so we dared not approach the buffet alone. Safety in numbers, people. THAT DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS LOOK: The buffet islands were beautiful and beckoning, displaying local traditional meats, such as lamb, juicy pork tenderloin, beef, reindeer, baked and smoked fish (including many types of salmon), and shell fish. We were able to try many types of fish we had never heard of before, and we agreed all were tasty and prepared perfectly, Not to be outdone by the meat stations, there were salad, hot dish, and bread choices aplenty, along with a charcuterie station with local sausages, cheeses, and deer pate. LET THERE BE CAKE: Leave room for dessert, friends. Share bites of your crème brûlée or chocolate mousse with your companions to experience as many of the endless delicious puddings, flans and cakes as possible. Overall the hotel could use quite a few updates, and the tour groups are insufferable, but a jaunt through the building at the very least is worthwhile (or stay and pig out like Timberlake)! 5 salmon fillets for the scenic setting and art collections 3.5- 4 salmon fillets for the buffet and service 0 salmon fillets for the rude buffet guy. May there be karmic buffet retribution in his future. "Life is a glorious banquet, a limitless and delicious buffet." (Maya Angelou)
