Some years ago my wife and I saw one of Tandems glasses at thr Portland Mueseum of Art. Twe wanted…read moreto buy four but they only had one. The people at thr museum store suggested tat we go to their studio. We arranged to do this and we're greeted warmly when we arrived. We spent several delightful hours with them as he showed us the process. The pieces we looked at were awesome, ultimately we purchased five of their glasses. We couldn't decide which not to buy. The glasses exquisite,, easy to hold, correct size and wonderful to lo9k at. Our children have admired them for years. This year we decided to give one of them a set as a Christmas gift. The process was easy. I asked that there be substantial ble in the decoration. When our daughter unwrapped the package she was beyond delighted. They took great pains to ship them so that they would arrive in time manner, they did. This time they had to choose which ones to send, with very little guidance. The glasses they vose were exactly right, These glasses are hand made and unique. They are pieces of original. The value is very very good.

The two described the intricacies of their work: hand-blowing glass into pitchers and cups among other pieces. Terrill described how they get the temperature of the glass up to thousands of degrees Fahrenheit, shaping it into the creation they desire, as well as how they color and shape a slightly cooler glass to make the shapes for their designs on the plain glass. Both Terrill and Charlie were extremely kind, and allowed my friend and I to handle the pieces to get better views of them. I am simply amazed and truly appreciate their work as well as their kindness. I purchased three amazingly gorgeous pieces that had strips of various colors with whimsical and creative designs on them. The colors are beautiful and work together perfectly. It's very evident that Terrill and Charlie love what they do and that their pieces are made with time and care. I have never seen anything like the pieces Terrill and Charlie create, and I doubt I ever will. With dedicated and talented artists, and outstandingly beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces, Tandem Glass is a one-of-a-kind shop!!

Although they only have a dozen or so in house strains in rotation, as a result you can count on high a top tier product with a consistency that no others I am aware of can hold a candle to. At 25 dollars an eighth their price to quality ratio probably cant be beat. Definitely check these guys out grab a slice of chem dog D and take a hike through the beautiful western Maine mountains or have a meal at one of bethels many great restaurants.

I'm old and uncool enough to only know the function of about 30% of the stuff in the store but all of it is 100% awesome and 100% no-BS actual art. Most of it made by talented local/regional people. This ain't no grungy dive either. The glass pieces can range in price up to $800 bucks. A MFA exhibit in Boston made me a fan of blown glass art a long time ago. The pieces on display and for sale here are pretty amazing if occasionally incomprehensible. My favorite stuff was made by David Colton but the shop showcases a number of different glass artists. The shop also sells smoking accessories including stuff for vaping, oils and concentrates. It's maybe 80% high-end glass pieces and 20% smoke shop. Very interesting mix and a nice owner to boot.

But it's much more than an art gallery. Owners Brian and Stephanie also offer community classes and workshops so that people can find their inner artist / glass nerd and let them roam free! I do not think of myself as a very handy or crafty or artistic person, but I recently had the pleasure of taking a workshop to make "scrappy birds:" stained glass birds that are made out of scraps of glass. I went with my partner, who has been making stained glass art for a number of years (I have never done it before). We both had a good time and learned new stuff! Heather, the teacher, was approachable, knowledgeable and friendly. I learned how to wrap the glass in copper foil, use a soldering iron and attach little legs and a tail to my scrappy birds. Heather took something that had seemed difficult and out of reach and made it understandable. Best of all, I got to take home my glass art birds and hang them in the window, where they catch the light and make me smile. This was a great way to while away a cold and snowy winter night! I'm excited to take more classes there. Perhaps I am crafty after all. :)
