It's true. Men are picky about our beards. Even those among us who say we don't care, make absolutely sure we look like we don't care. I've gotten one professional beard trim since COVID. Prior to that every two to three weeks I visited a genius who understood what I was looking for and did impeccable work. Unfortunately, an accident put her out of commission. Then COVID. Then a move across town. I like to change my beard with the seasons. In January through April, I keep it short and usually manage to wrangle it with a trimmer at home. Then, in May I start to grow it short on the sides and a bit longer on the chin. Not at all easy to do. Finally, in fall I go pretty much full Santa, playing his helper with neighborhood kids. I say this all so you get a picture of what this looks like for the hapless barber who messes me up. Well, I need not have worried once I found Stag. I called this morning and the owner, Jess, got me an afternoon appointment with Jordanne. In the meantime, I received a text confirming the appointment and another one about 45 minutes before show time. I met Jordanne at exactly 4:30. She talked about my beard, offered some ideas, asked a lot about preferences, then checked in with me repeatedly along the way. I left relaxed, pleased, and eager to return. I've been coming here for awhile now. I like this place for many reasons, the online appointment system they use here (Vagaro) is one of them. This place may seem a little bit on the expensive side compared to other places at first. However, the professional skill you receive here makes it absolutely worth. I've worked with several barbers here and it's clear that this place holds a high standard of talent, skill, and service. My stylist of choice for a little over a year now has been Andrea. It's no understatement to say that she's one of the best (if not the best) barber I've ever dealt with. She's professional, highly skilled, courteous, and consistent. At this point I stopped looking at myself in the mirror because I know I can always trust the result. Thanks to her, going to the barber stopped being a high anxiety experience and became an enjoyable experience to me. You'll always be offered something to drink upon arrival. Stag is great for that stylish men's cut, at a price point that's competitive with other salons. I've been going to Aiden since he was an Apprentice at Stag, and I'm super happy with my cut. I'm always offered water, coffee/tea or a PBR when I walk in, and it's a nice men's salon experience. Book online, or book at the end of your appointment, as slots do fill up quickly. Jess Stern and her staff of 5 barbers all do an excellent job, whether its a haircut or head shave (which I've been getting for 9 months now) and face shave (nearly 4 years of those for me). Whoah, can't believe I don't have a review for this place yet! Stag is an AWESOME experience - not just a barber yet an experience that you must enjoy on a regular basis. Jess has done an awesome job on integrating this super rad business into the community with some super cool (and very talented) barbers. I've been coming here for the last year and half seeing the same barber - Simone. She is awesome and always takes extreme care to make sure that my hair is always on point. Walking in, you will notice that manly stuffed animals and other decorations. When you check in, you're offered either some local (Rishi) tea, local (Valentino) coffee, or good old PBR (which makes you seem like a badass). Take a seat on the couch and read one of the books on the coffee table. They offer haircuts, beard trimmings, head shaving, and a wet shave with a straight razor. When you get a haircut, the barbers bust out the straight razor and clean up your neckline. Bring your leather shoes since Izzy will be able to take them for you and do an amazing job at cleaning them up, shining them, and make them look brand new. All for $10. Stag is really involved in the community with sponsoring various events, having events at their location, and overall is a great place to check out. I can only give you the mom's review, while I did not get my hair cut at Stag, I did take my teenage son there for his first haircut in Milwaukee. Stag was very easy to find, and surprisingly parking was easier than I thought it would be! Very cool place to walk into (smells like man heaven...not sure if it is their soaps or shampoos but i could inhale that scent forever). The place has a cool vibe with hardwood floors and comfy couches! Lauren was running a little behind but she was super sweet in apologizing (things happen). The son is 15 so I trust him to tell his stylist what he is looking for with his hair. He was smiling the whole time and his hair turned out great! Lauren took the time to talk to him about what he wanted and asked a lot of questions about his routine. The staff was really nice about asking us both if we wanted coffee, water ect. The owner came and checked out my son's hair afterwards and introduced herself to me which I really appreciated. Moving to a new place sometimes you have to go to a few shops to find the right cut, but we found it on the first try (thanks fellow yelpers). I used to go to this place when it was a different shop and now it's an exclusive men's barber shop. I treated my hubby to a hair cut and a shave today in prep for a job interview. He came home looking like a new man. This is an old fashioned services salon complete with hot towels and a straight razor. The stylists are top notch and very friendly. The salon has a manly feel to it so men can feel at ease. We plan on coming back right before our vow renewal so my hubby can get a touch up. My hubby also got a shave and some eyebrow weeding. My husband always leaves looking and feeling fabulous. I would highly recommend Ivy to anyone, especially men with especially curly and cute locks. My husband is biracial and finds it difficult to find someone who can tame his mop. Plus, no one seems to leave the chair without the seal of approval from their managing lead lady who has a great eye for detail. Fantastic first experience at Stag! Checked-in and was immediately offered/brought a beverage. Jaksun was the barber for my beard trim. She asked what I was looking for and offered her professional opinion. She was knowledgeable & skilled, and we exchanged pleasant conversation. Very satisfied with the end results - exactly what I wanted. As it was my first time, she also took the time to introduce me to the owner, Jess. I brought several pairs of boots to have Izzy the Bootblack look at. She is a true master leather artist. She polished my black dress boots impeccably, and I left a pair of Frye's for her to refinish with custom hand-painted patina. Can't wait to see the results! I have been to a number of other "reputable" barber shops in the MKE area, but was never completely satisfied. This is hands-down the best, in both atmosphere and service. You'll notice that my original review was from 2012. I have been able to see this place grow and expand into the area next door. You'll notice that I provide the rare non 5 star review here. Why? In the beginning the thing that made Stag what is was, was atmosphere. The cut you get is going to be dependent on the barber that works here so that can change as people move about. In the early days this was a smaller shop with a more personal friendly feel. My last time in it was far removed from that. Somewhere here something happened. It has gone from having that personal feel run by people that are passionate about what they do to a business that is following a trendy business formula. The Authenticity isn't there any more and I think you can see that if you've been coming back over the years. It's worth noting that my appointments were rarely on time for a variety of reasons with the last check in having me waiting around 45 minutes. The downgrade in rating doesn't mean that you, the reader, are going to have a bad experience. You may find it absolutely great. The rating is more of an "It's not you, it's me" thing. Hair grows back. Good coffee and a PBR. Good conversation. Short, short haircut. They must go together. The more you talk, the more hair is cut. Looking around the room, it seems all customers received the same style haircut: short. I specified the length and that was lost in the conversation. I appreciate an artist wanting everything perfect, but you have to keep trimming to make every strand of hair equal length. That meant for me almost a buzz cut at the end of the session. The manager stepped in to critique the job and cut even more off. I like the atmosphere but I'm not a millennial. I don't have a full beard. My hair hasn't been this short since I was 8 years old and dad directed the barber's scissors. This was my first "shave" experience in a barber shop. i was Incredibly pleased with the haircut, the staff is very kind. Barbers are friendly and easy to hold a conversation with. Felt very well taken care of. Took a star off due to some communication issues. I went for a "haircut and shave" was scheduled with a non licensed apprentice. Was rung up at a lower price which I accounted attributed that to it being an apprentice, turns out they had only done a trim. Realized when I got home the "shave" was incomplete and that's why they didn't charge for that. I spoke clearly to my barber that I wanted cheekbones and and neck shaved, he did a trim. I am not a man. I do not have a beard or man hair. Ere go, I have not been serviced at Stag. Stag is for the men-folk exclusively, so how can I review? How can I give five stars? Here's how, friends: 1. Offerings are NICHE, yo: straight razor shaves, hot towels, oils, shave kits, haircuts... this place is the closest thing MKE has to a dude-centric spa experience. So that's cool, and it makes Milwaukee cooler. 2. Gifts: Awesome products you can gift for the misters in your life, and also, you could get a gift certificate and this is business is COOL. And different. And cool. And local. You're cool if you send your mister to Stag. 3. The space itself is awesome: I attended their open house/two-year anniversary party this past weekend and it made me wish I was a guy, but only for a second. Seriously. Local art, antlers, warm and inviting and great products/smells abound... 4. The owner, Jess, is a really nice gal, and she knows what she's doing. Check this place out! Being a headshaver, I hadn't been to a barber of ANY kind in close to 20 years---but found the need when I started a beard that I planned on growing out. I've done my own trimming in the past and it wasn't pretty--so I wanted a professional to send it in the right direction. I was familiar with Stag Barbershop based on past media coverage and was drawn to the story of Jess, the owner, and what she was creating. The reviews backed up the coverage. My only concern was being in my mid 50's and sticking out like a sore thumb in a flock of Bay View hipsters. As I found out, that wasn't a big deal. I set an appointment online and received a prompt followup to ascertain the scope of my beard trim which was greatly appreciated and wise since this was my first trim since setting the beard loose. Upon arrival, the beard had 5 weeks of growth without any care, so this was going to be more than a minor beard trim. My appointment was modified so Lauren would have more time to do the initial work. I randomly picked Lauren and am very pleased I did. She's thorough, experienced, and a very interesting person. Pretty certain I've never experienced that level of care with my appearance and when she was done, I was very happy. She took unruly and set it on course---just what I wanted. First straight razor shave experience. I could get used to that. My second trip was for a simple trim which was much quicker but brought the results I was hoping for. Decor is well thought out and the music (and system) is great. I haven't partaken of the complimentary beverages but they were offered both times. And I didn't feel out of place--the clientele is diverse. I live in Fox Point and it's a bit of a drive to Bay View. Worth it. read more

Instead of getting addicted to drugs, get addicted to a straight razor shave! Can't believe I had never had one until yesterday. It was an amazing experience. Don't be intimidated by the thought of a relative stranger (oxymoron?) taking a razor blade to your throat. These ladies know what they're doing, and they take their time. The hot towels, the oils, the fresh blade, the powder...it's a spa service for your face. I was attended to by the lovely Ashley, who did a great job on my shave, and gave me a sweet haircut. I must have shed about 5 lbs of hair. The shave and a haircut will cost you more than two bits...$50 to be exact. Maybe not something many of us can afford to do a lot, but you gotta treat yo' self sometimes! I was definitely born in the wrong decade. This used to be a normal thing that all men did and never thought twice about! How and or why the hell did that ever change? After some hard looking, I know that I've found my local barbershop. Despite having little hair left on my poor head, people still can manage to mess it up. Ashley did an amazing job, giving my buzz cut a little more edge to it. She, as well as Jess, are so keen to the details. The vibe of Stag is awesome.......very fun, mellow, friendly place that welcomes you with open arms (or at least a drink of your choice). $30 gets you an amazing cut, shampoo, scalp massage and neck shave with a straight razor. Very old school and awesome, indeed! I didn't get a chance to see the haircare products they offer, but will do so on my next visit. Honestly, I wanted to simply love Stag. I wanted to so bad. The place's decor looks like a book taken out of my dreams, and the staff is incredibly friendly. Both of those are exactly what made me overlook warning signs. The first time I went in, I intentionally went there for a cut and a shave. I left with a decent haircut and a face full of tiny little cuts and razor burns. I chocked it up to being a new business and kept going, where I continuously got good haircuts for a while. Occasionally, my typical barber wouldn't be in when I could make it (reasonably) and despite all efforts, I would be assigned another barber. This was rarely a problem, other than occasionally having to readdress how I wanted to get my hair done. However, and this is what my review is based on, the one time it counted, was the one time it went majorly wrong. I can forgive cutting slightly too short when you go in for any typical haircut. It seems to happen pretty frequently, no matter where you go. However, this particular time, it was my wedding haircut. I had waited a slightly longer period of time, prior to the cut, to make sure I had a clean pallet to work with. I called well in advance, explaining it was my big-wedding-cut, to get the cut over a week before the date; I couldn't get my usual barber. So they hooked me up with another and I thought, again, it'll be fine. It wasn't. It was the worst haircut I've received from a place since moving to Wisconsin 5 years ago. To the barber's credit, she seemed new. I don't really blame her as much as I can't believe that when I called, for a cut as important... scratch that... frankly the only cut that I would view as actually important, they assign me to someone that inexperienced. The result was a haircut that didn't feel like me, that made me look 10 years older than I am, and that simply wasn't up to par from what I had expected. I tried going back later the week of, to my normal barber, to get a shave and clean up, over the most inconvenient time I had available - just so I could make sure it was her - in hopes she could save the haircut. But, unfortunately, what was done, was done. Sure, it's a heck of a lot better than your standard 7 buck haircut, but I had switched to them (mostly for the shave portion) from a very reputable stylist and I do regret my decision. I'll be heading back over to my old regular place from here on out. Sorry, Stag, but you had one job. read more

I've been going here for about a year now, so I figure I'm due to write up a review for this fine establishment. I found out about this place due to a haircut gift my lady gave me as a present. Well guys, it is well worth the $30 for a haircut. I've yet to get the haircut + straight razor shave, and I don't know if I ever will. Not because I don't trust them, but because I pamper myself already by using a safety razor, shave oil, and shave brush/soap. I suppose that one day I might splurge... as long as they don't Sweeney Todd me. :) Greeted with a beer/coffee/water/whiskey before you get shampooed and conditioned, scissor and trimmer cut, and a hot shave cream + straight razor neck shave. If your barber is busy with the previous customer, a comfy couch awaits with some manly reading material to be had. Books like "Zombies Hate Stuff", some mustache books, situational books for being a proper gentleman, magazines, etc. There's internet access just in case you need to do some urgent work while waiting before or afterwards. You won't be kicked out. Stay, relax, finish your beer. Additional details: they have hair product, straight razors, shave soaps, and shave brushes available for purchase if you are upgrading to fewer blades. Do yourself a favor and throw away that 3, 4, or 5 blade disposable and get something that doesn't make your neck break out in bumps, cuts better, is cheaper, and lasts longer... a straight razor or safety razor. read more

On a trip to Milwaukee with my hometown bud Kyle H last summer, we met Jess at the Blackbird Bar one late afternoon and she gave us her card before we started in on drinking Moscow Mules. I returned a year later with a giant puff of hair (no haircut for 6 months) and met Ivy a super nice woman who gave me a great haircut and was fun as hell to talk to. I have curly hair and can be very picky about my haircuts, and when I get one I am not too fond of I let it grow for 5-10 months before going back. I was happy from the start to finish. You can usually find parking quite easily out front and just walk in. On the day I was there Jess was shaving a guy's head bald and he was pretty darned pleased with the service. Ivy took care of me and was just a joy to chat with. From the start to the finish I just had a great time chatting with her about Finland, mass transit, and Totoro. The haircut: I was happy with my cut. She cleaned me up, and gave me a nice shorter summer cut and even styled my hair a bit before she was done. She cleaned up my neckline nicely with a straight razor. Since I am a pretty hairy guy, this attention to detail was appreciated. I truly had a great visit and am glad I finally decided to check this place out! $30 for a high quality cut and shampoo, and $50 for a cut and shave! Next time I think I will go for the shave. As a gift for my husband I made him an appointment at Stag to treat him to a shave and a haircut. It turned out to be one of my better gift ideas! My husband had yet to indulge in a straight razor shave. Jess at Stag has a great reputation for her barber services so I knew she would put my husband at ease about the new experience once he was in the chair. He was very happy with both his haircut and shave and commented that having the shave with it's hot towels and comfortable barber chair forced him to relax. In that, he could see the appeal in going to a spa. I couldn't be happier that I was able to treat him to an experience that was so relaxing and made him look as great as he felt. Guys need to recognize that it's not a threat to their manliness to pamper themselves from time to time. I decided one day that I wanted a straight-razor shave so I walked over and got into Jess' chair. A half hour later I felt amazing, smelled great, and my face was perfectly shorn. Jess is a true artist with a blade. She uses a specially blended oil to prep the skin followed by a hot towel then hot shaving lather. After the shave a cold towel wakes you out of your stupor and gets the heart pumping again. It's amazing. I've since been back to get a trim and was extremely pleased with this as well. It saddens me that I'm leaving Milwaukee and won't have access to Stag anymore. But when I come back to visit I'll be knocking at their door. They also offer a line of branded bar soaps, hand soaps, and skin moisturizers. Great stuff. Support local businesses people. read more

I have to say I was a little weary this afternoon about 3 things. Getting a shave with a straight razor, becoming just another pervert with a mustache, and the impending snow storm. But walking away from Stag Barbershop an hour later, only the latter problem remains (though not for long, the weather guy promises). My worries were quickly alleviated by the awesome friendly staff, the antler-y decor, the warm comfy face towel, and the relaxing foam lather...my god the lather! It was as if my face was ripped from my head and gently hurled up to heaven. It was a fantastic experience that left a man who never shaves rethinking his scruffy bearded life. I am horrible when it comes to getting my hair cut. I have my favorite barber but he is 2.5 hours away. So I have been on a journey to find a younger barber. I find Stag on Yelp and its 30 minutes away. If I gotta make a hike for a good cut, I'll do it. I had my first appointment with Sam. She is newer (6 months at Stag). I was a bit nervous to get to a new joint and the newer barber. Upon entry, I met Jess the owner. Place has a good vibe. All female barbers (just a side note) that know how to clipper cut without guards AND use a straight-blade razor. Anyway after a meticulous cut by Sam, she said Jess had to check her work. Apparently there is a 1-year probation for the newer stylists. Jess came over made some very, very minor tweaks. This is awesome because it tells you the owner has pride in their business and wants to keep a reputation. In short, decent price, great atmosphere, great barbers. I just got my haircut here today and it was a great experience! My normal barber at another salon was books for the next 2 weeks and I desperately needed my hair cut before a job interview. I was able to call this morning and schedule an appointment within the small window of availability I had today. Anytime you're getting your haircut at a new location by a new barber it can be a little nerve racking. Hannah was very professional, she consulted with me for several minutes about the style and type of haircut I wanted, and she delivered. Her attention to detail was well noticed. The rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful. I almost forgot to mention how awesome this place looks! The decor and the old barber style chairs are very cool! So instead of heading over to Great Clips for a haircut I decided to try Stag Barbershop because my family always likes to support local businesses. I set my appointment for 10 am Saturday with Hannah. I was friendly greeted by everyone who worked there and offered a beverage - soda, water, or PBR. Of course those of you who know me, I requested the PBR. They start you off by washing your hair. Now Hanna just didn't put the #1 clipper attachment on and shave my head. She took the time and did the old school way of using scissors and a comb. I was truly impressed because that does take skill. And to end it all she used a blade to finish up the back of my neck. Milwaukee will be my third city in the last 9 months that I lived in and I've been searching for a new place to get a haircut. Stag was my 3rd barbershop in Bayview that I tried and I don't need to look any further. Totally different atmosphere than any of other place that I've been in. They have plenty of good product to help you keep looking good after they've worked their magic. Haircuts involve shampooing, a scalp massage, and a straight razor neck shave. I went here for the first time this afternoon and I am incredibly impressed. I have a huge cow-lick, but somehow the stylist, Hannah, was able to turn it into a very professional look that makes me look and feel like I will be taken seriously. I am a business student and a young professional looking to make some big steps forward in my career. I realize the importance of a well tailored look, as it defines someone's first impression of you. After visiting Stag, I feel like I finally have a haircut that will let the old guys I deal with that I am a young, professional force to be reckoned with. I know it's a little grandiose for a haircut, but it's THAT important. Furthermore, the overall experience of Stag is superb. The owner came over and shook my hand, I was offered a cup of coffee, my haircut was looked over by more than one stylist to make sure it was perfect. 5 star service all the way. I stopped in here for this first time the other day. I usually get my haircut in Chicago and wanted something as progressive as that. I got what I was looking for. After checking in I was offered a beer while I waited. I only had to wait a few minutes as they were right on time with their appointments. The haircut turned turned out to my liking, the conversation and atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, and the staff were all friendly. Was my haircut the same I normally get in Chicago? No. I got used to having a fellow gay barber who I could let cut my hair at his own discretion and have it turn out great. But I wouldn't expect that of another new barber. But this place is definitely a Milwaukee favorite of mine now. read more

This place is awesome. I can't really think of anything to complain about :-) I used to go to Cost cutters and other commercial places and then I stumbled upon this place. I don't get a shave (I'm probably missing out), but every haircut I have gotten here has turned out perfect. The vibe here is really cool, and they really take time with your hair.
