Of course you will find all the regular suspects: a huge party section of gift wrap, ribbons, matching color paper plates, cups, streamers, balloons and so on. Also the costume section if you need wigs, knights armor, pirate hats. Cheap plastic and terracotta pots, spades and takes off questionable construction. Cosmetics and hair care of dubious origin. A whole aisle of candles and incense. Back to school gear as well. And then you find the stuff you don't normally see. There are concrete garden settings. Half size boat bow shelves. Full size garden arches. An entire row of State of Origin. A shelf dedicated to goth/metal decor (vampire damsels curled around purple dragons on a bed of skulls). Giant crochet ottomans. Life size lamb and piglet statues. These are seasonal things. At the moment, should you want to apply a nautical theme to your home, you will have no trouble here. Things are not terribly dear here either. I know I'm reviewing a bargain store, but I have seen a garden seat at one place being sold for $200. So there's "bargain" and "Bargain"... Overflow, for the times I've been, never have seen something to roll my eyes in terms of price.

Stop in here if you absolutely must visit the monstrous cheap shop at the top of the escalator, but let it be known that it may be... at your peril.

I grabbed one in every colour of the rainbow. They've extended their premises since I was last here but that's just more room for wonderment. Most things are $10 and under and from kitchen gadgets, stationery, party costumes and party decor you're every cheap-ass need is covered here. From the leopard print laptop bag I decided I must have (until I saw the $295 price tag) to the tassled, black leather tote with chain strap ($595) and even a modern update on that iconic glomesh purse in muted silver ($295). But then I saw the jewels. Some of which were slightly more affordable, like the chunky crystal ring for $95. Although I have to be honest and say I really preferred the necklace that was all twisted silver chains for $295. But then I had a spritz of the Oroton perfume (which comes in an expensive looking silver box) - I'm now hooked on the Rosado scent, which is a very do-able $75. And despite the fact that I paraded around and posed in the mirror with virtually every bag in the shop, tried on every piece of jewellery and spritzed so much perfume people started gasping for breath, the sales assistants were charming, polite and never once made me feel like I was being annoying. And, a little tip for you - just head for the $12.95 rack (they usually have one) and you may bag yourself a sweet little cotton mini sun dress - I've purchased a couple and actually wear them as nighties. What I do feel I really need to tell you is that the one plaza closest to Creek Rd is officially "Cannon Hill Kmart Plaza" and it is the best of the three. It's well-lit, clean and cheerful, and as it's the closest set of shops near my current workplace, I've been frequenting it for more than five years now for necessity's sake (Australia Post for bills & postage, Mister Minit for keys & watch batteries, etc). While it's still very suburban plaza chic (compared to the monstrosity that is Westfield Carindale a mere suburb down the road), it's FINE. You know? It'll do. It's got a few chain stores that Carindale doesn't (e.g. Kmart, Loot, Autograph), a few Carindale DOES (Coles, Liquorland, EB Games, Payless Shoes, Gloria Jeans, Coffee Club, etc omg okay so there are a lot of double-ups, not my problem), and Deli Talk, but you can read more about Deli Talk on their own Yelp page (as well as some of the other shops in the Plaza). If I gave CHKP any more than three stars, they'd just be for my personal memories that are associated with it (like getting my passport), but if I strip them out, it's still absolutely A-OK here.

Probably the biggest Kmart I've ever been to. Homewares everywhere. I was in cheapo decorating heaven. But I was not to be distracted. I was there for certain things and that was all I was getting. Wait do I need four empty terrariums? Alice. No. Control yourself. I found everything I needed pretty quickly and they - shock horror - had everything I wanted (and so, so much more) I filled my trolley nicely (quilt, laundry stuff, bathroom bits, hangers, desk) and headed to pay WITHOUT buying any candles, paintings, extra bedding or hanging things at this stage - you cannot believe how freaking proud of myself I am. The check out kid was so cute. I got all flustered at the check out trying to get everything out of my trolley without decapitating someone with my desk and he was so patient. I am super excited to return and fully unleash myself on the joy that is Kmart. Bring it on.

Selling a large contingency of books, the shelves here are very neatly organised and offer some quality titles. The display cases here are also worth a gander as they can offer up some real bargains. (Especially in the way of cameras, an old canon only sets you back $80 here!) ...But the reason why I love coming here has to be the staff. The lovely lady here is hands down the friendliest op-shop attendant I've experienced in Brisbane. (..apart from the Ipswich flower mill nanna.) With it's easy Oxford location and thrift store prices, I highly recommend popping in.
