A year ago I approached Schmeer for a custom project: steel jewelry displays for my jewelry store…read more I had used Schmeer before in a smaller project, so I thought it was worth a try. I like to support small local shops whenever possible. I want to give them a glowing review, because they are local, but I just can't. Here's why: they failed on all counts. Their poor execution and overall (lack of) quality coupled with them not meeting the deadline (clearly stated on my bid) was totally unprofessional and unacceptable. The job was simple: replicate my existing custom stands with the same welds and dimensions by X date, and seal them to protect against rust. Cedric accepted the project and assured me they would be no problem. We went over all the specs together, and his bid was about $1000.00 for everything. More than I want to pay, yes, but I believed I would be getting quality work that would last well into the future. I received a call that my project was done, and I drove across town to pick the displays up. UGH. The welds were completely sloppy, with gobs of melted metal and discolorations due to shoddy craftsmanship. Some of the right angles weren't even straight. Even more maddening, the displays weren't even FINISHED and had raw, sharp edges one of my customers actually cut her finger on (luckily, a small cut). The edges hadn't been sanded smooth. They looked like a high school welding class project gone terribly wrong. They had also not been sealed against rust. Anyway, I had a grand opening the next day and was forced to just use them as they were. It was rather embarrassing to use such poor quality displays with my nice, high quality jewelry but the show had to go on. After the grand opening, I had time to call Cedric at Schmeer to discuss all the problems. He was apologetic but within our phone call he revealed he had one of his newest shop employees complete my work, and Cedric hadn't checked them for quality himself. Cedric agreed to refinish all my pieces so I tore down ALL the displays within our store and took them back to their shop. I picked up the refurbished pieces 2 days later (another annoying trip all the way across town). They still weren't like the original sample, but they were about 70% similar. At this point I had already wasted way too much time and energy on the project and it became obvious they just didn't have the skill to create the work that was outlined in the bid sheet. I wasted $1000+ on something that quite frankly, looks like I had a cousin or friend with a "welding hobby" make them (not a sheet metal shop). In the end, the work was not finished by the deadline, and they were a far cry from the original sample. I DO NOT recommend using Schmeer Sheet Metal. Please please stay away.

The mass-produced…read moreliners online just didn't look great *or strong* and I couldn't find anything that was a good fit. I'm so glad I found Jim & Mighty Fab. He definitely went above and beyond for my small project. He came over for the estimate as promised and gave me a download on what he recommended for my project and we worked together on the details before landing on a final plan. He kept me updated along the build process and the liner turned out pretty sweet with a beautiful custom fit. Worth noting when comparing this custom liner vs the mass produced stuff online- Jim can create a welded one-piece unit that is structural vs. most online stuff is multiple pieces bolted together. Also, check out the seamless top lip- beautiful work! I don't think you'll find a more meticulous fabricator in town - Jim gets it done! Also, it's great to support a small business and an overall really nice guy. Thanks again for the great work Jim - very much appreciated!

This review is strictly for my Yelp communication with Mighty Fab when I inquired about purchasing…read morea sheet of 18-guage stainless steel or getting it cut to size if I provided the stock. Jim responded pretty much immediately with not only a thoughtful, friendly, and great explanation of what his capabilities are, but lots of suggestions of other reputable businesses to try since he couldn't quite do what I wanted. Jim continued to respond promptly and provide lots of great support and suggestions based on my responses. I particularly appreciated Jim's honesty and being so transparent and up-front about the results if he were to do the job with his equipment. Although Jim didn't have the capability to perform what I wanted, I was able to get the job done through following his recommendations. I'd definitely recommend contacting Mighty Fab if you need any metal work done, and I'll definitely keep Mighty Fab in mind for future needs.

It's no secret that the quality of furniture making is in decline. It's just easier to mold it out…read moreof sawdust and glue, or mold it out of plastic. The sad thing is that the molded sawdust is sheathed with veneer, thin sheets of wood peeled from often old growth trees or endangered tropical hardwoods. Often that tree that took a hundred years or more to grow, is being used to make a piece of furniture with a life of 3-5 years. Don't let us get started into veneer poaching http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/california/Redwood-Park-Closes-Road-to-Deter-Burl-Poachers-248659171.html. Or hardwoods fueling war lords. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/liberia-ex-forestry-boss-arrested-corruption. That's just sick. The Good Mod is going against that grain. Their specialty is mid-century modern from the Scandinavian invasion. Those Vikings and their furniture! They refinish or reupholster the pieces as necessary and the price reflects that. If you have ever priced having a piece of furniture shot with a couple coats of lacquer by a professional, who also, by the way, is being paid to properly handle lacquer, which is very toxic, you know. But those prices are comparable to the new price in its time. And you are getting a piece of furniture you can pass down generations. In fact, some of it may become design auction material in the future. They were good on my visit with cadenzas, occasional chairs, classic Knoll chairs, a few sofas, lighting. They also gather up some industrial artifacts and repurpose them, if that fits your aesthetics. One of their newest spec pieces is a walnut ping pong table, which could also be used as a dining table. This item would fit well into the tech startup world. If you are an art director or set decorator they would be a good resource. The Good Mod has moved around and as of this writing are up a creaky elevator or quite a few stairs on the fourth floor. But that gives them a new big cheap space. And note to new arrivers decorating your Pearl condos - if you can rock this style, you can patronize a great Portland reuse business. You can even fib a little and claim your hip grandparents/parents/you bought it new! The Good Mod cleans up and restores furniture from the mid-century modernist age. Reduce, reuse, recycle! Be cool, stay cool, keep cool! (Thanks to Mr Oscar Brown Jr)
