When my mom fell and broke her hand while we were on vacation, we looked for just a walk-in urgent care clinic for her to go to, but found that they were inside the hospitals in England. We had a full day + a travel day left in our trip, so wanted to get it take care of as soon as possible. Unfortunately, St. Thomas was unable to help us due to their absolutely extreme and unacceptable wait times. We arrived around 8 PM and waited in an outdoor but tented queue for about 45 minutes before being checked in to the emergency room. Signage was not very clear, so we really weren't sure we were in the right place until we got to the front of the line. There were people in line with us with all types of absolutely terrible ailments, and a few that looked like they needed to be lying down, or at least sitting, but all wheelchairs were full. When we finally made it inside, a lovely nurse named Elle checked us in. She was fantastic and so helpful and friendly. She took some notes down, and offered medication if needed. We sat for about 20 more minutes before being called to another station where we told another person all the same things, and were sent down the hall to "urgent care" where they warned us it would be a 3-4 hour wait. And there we sat. And sat. And sat for about 3.5 hours - observing only 4 people being called back, having x-rays, and then coming back to the waiting room to sit. They made several announcements over the intercom during our visit asking people not to ask reception for a wait time update as it only hinders their ability to work through the line. I believe we only saw 2 people leave with, what appeared to be, a solution to their injury. After nearly 4 hours and absolutely no end in sight, we decided to call it quits, and try to wait and seek help when we returned to the States. Before we left, the receptionist had us go in and speak to the nurse practitioner on-duty who gave us some tips and a sling. She was lovely as well, and seemed sorry that she wasn't able to help us. I know that England's healthcare system plays a role in the terrible experience that we received here, but we sat in this waiting room for hours in hard plastic chairs (still with plastic walls separating them, by the way, making it impossible to talk to the person next to you), and the water jug was completely empty. The ER waiting room had vending machines, so I ended up going back there at one point to get a drink, but my goodness, they aren't even providing the bare minimum here. My mom was in a lot of pain, but there were people here with all sorts of wounds, waiting all night just for a few stitches. After returning home to the US, my mom was able to visit an urgent care and only wait about 15 minutes to see a doctor. She's all squared away now (or on the way to it, at least) but this is such an extremely terrible way to do things as she was in a lot of pain for days. read more

I went to the A&E due to severe back pain and urine retention. I waited 10 hours till they put m a catheter my bladder almost burst. They kept me for a week and it was a nightmare. When the catheter was removed I was told that I got urine infection and I was informed that I would be given antibiotics before I leave. on the day I was supposed to leave I waited till 7 in evening but no one turned up and I fall asleep because I was given endless painkillers including morphine. Then a nurse woke me up and told me you to leave now I told her but I the antibiotics, she replied rudely there's no doctor to give you any medicine. It was late and I was in a severe pain so I refused to leave without antibiotic. She replied that she was the nurse in charge and her name was Diana "if you don't leave I w call the security to kick you out". I was horrified and called a family member to pick me up and left the hospital almost at the midnight without antibiotics. read more

Extremely slow, rude and did little more than tell me to take my own antibiotic and see what happens . Further at 10:39pm at night the offered no assistance finding quarantine accommodations to a foreign visitor while threatening to throw me out forcibly....worst care ever! read more

My experience at St Thomas' Hospital has been generally quite good, which is not easy to say about a hospital! I had to go to A&E on one occasion and the wait was reasonable. I had to go for an X-Ray on another occasion and it was also fairly quick and hassle free. The phlebotomy area is also quite efficient. read more

Although you shed and change, you have birthed some real champions of medicine who have healed, delivered and reconstructed the hundreds who have flooded through your doors. I thank God for the NHS and although waiting lists can be insane but hand on heart most will never see you in pain. However they might leave you festering in a pool of your own pee and poop and chocking on your vomit on a trolley in a draughty hallway - just saying. read more

This Hospital saved our trip to London. My husband had been having stomach issues which we thought were resolved and addressed by the time our trip came around. But of course, if it can go wrong, it will -- and it did. The second we landed in London he was so ill he could barely manage. We were disheartened he would not be able to enjoy our vacation that we had looked forward to for so long. We first learned of the NHS and headed there but since they couldn't prescribe medication (which he desperately needed) they referred us to St. Thomas urgent care center. We arrived there immediately and within less than 1 hour a Dr. had seen him, prescribed him medications, and was able to get his medication from the pharmacy on site. I could not believe how kind, efficient and helpful everyone was. Within hours of taking his medication my husband was back to normal and we were able to enjoy the rest of our 10 day trip. Not to mention all of it cost us under $20 US dollars!!!!! Being American, this blew me away. Just amazing. Thank you all so much at St. Thomas for making our vacation possible. It took 3 hours to get seen for a painful but not life-threatening injury. Whilst that was a bit of a wait, given how busy the A&E was, it didn't seem unreasonable. There were a few frayed tempers, but you just have to wait your turn. A triage system is in operation so the worse off you are, the sooner you'll get seen. The entrance to A&E is really hard to get to if you're having difficulty walking, and there is so much walking required between departments once you're in the system - the layout could be much better thought-out. Furthermore, there just aren't enough chairs in the main reception or the urgent care reception. The admin staff are disinterested and blunt (typical stereotypes) but the nurses and doctors seemed to be as cheery as possible with a backlog of people to treat. It's a difficult and often thankless job. I left in less pain and with a treatment plan and didn't pay a penny for anything, so can't say fairer than that. I didn't get a chance to explore because it is really difficult navigating the hospital on crutches (those door release buttons are awful, just awful!) but I noticed an M&S cafe and a gift shop on the way out, so facilities for more mobile visitors seem good. There is free wifi in the urgent care centre waiting room, which really helps with the boredom. If I needed urgent treatment, I would use this hospital again. It's clearly under resourced (like most of the NHS) but making the most of a bad situation. Special thanks to nurses Laura and Lee for looking after me. read more

So, I had been to Guy's St Thomas hospital's Urgent Care Unit for an immediate treatment of what it turned out to be Bacterial Conjunctivitis. There was a waiting time before you could see the doctor of about 1 hour 40 minutes which is a bit of a shame in a city such a London. Although I did went through a couple of nurses in that time. However, considering relatively less number of patients on a Friday evening, the queue was quite slow. I went through the conjunctivitis as promised in 5 days, however my blocked ears ( sever hearing difficulties) still exist after more than 10 days and I had to visit a local GP again for this beyond which this is still on going. Overall could do better considering it's location and perceived reputation. read more

I was referred to St Thomas' Hospital for investigations into sleep apnoea and ended up staying the night for observation. This was quite a strange experience as it was not, as I thought, on the ward, but actually in separate rooms off of the outpatient area. I was very nervous of the whole experience, but was made to feel completely at ease, if a little isolated. Once you arrive, you have to be kitted up with all the wires and tags ready to monitor your breathing overnight and that's a little stressful in itself, but the staff are really great. They explain everything in detail and then you are left in your room to watch TV, use the kitchen for a drink or whatever. The only down side for me was being woken up at 5.45am and told that the study was done and I could have some breakfast and leave - I'd had such a dreadful night with masks on and the like, I wanted my bed until at least midday! It's had some bad press, but which NHS hospital hasn't? they are a fantastic bunch of people there and it's a great hospital with good facilities and very centrally placed. read more

My daughter recently had her first child at St.Thomas we have nothing but praise for the service received especially with a quite difficult birth first class doctors midwives and nurses. However the parking facilities are a disgrace paid £124 for over night parking the ticket machines out of order the barrier help lines not working we had to pay cash because of machine malfunction and this resulted in a 45 minute delay in leaving with a 2 day old child in the car..It spoiled what had been a joyous experience and somebody should look at the appalling not caring service . it read more

I was taken here after an ambulance ride last Monday. It's a nice hospital but seems to have a critical shortage of blankets in Accident and Emergency. Other than that, excellent care and I was discharged after six hours with four stitches to the back of my head, some painkillers, and a couple of NHS sandwiches from a kind Doctor. read more

Wow is all I can say. Coming from the US this was an astounding experience. Went to the ER and was checked in and seen by the admitting nurse in minutes. Their attention to detail and genuine concern was something I'm not used too. In the US we spend 30 minutes filling out forms and making sure we have insurance. They left no stone unturned for me doing blood work, 2 EKGs, glucose tests, a complete physical better than the annual one I get in the USA. All the work was done by two nurses and a doctor who took the time to explain exactly what they were doing and explain the results. When they released me they made certain I was comfortable with what they did and then wished me well. I was shocked to discover all this was free gratis and for nothing !! Thank you thank you. I know countries love to claim their systems are better and of course there are pros and cons in every system but the US could learn an awful lot from the customer service I just received. read more

I had to write a short but special review of St Thomas. I was visiting London, I tripped, I fell, quite hard, sprained my foot and bonked my head. I was dizzy and a kind person called an ambulance for me. I kept trying to get up but between dizzy and sprained foot it wasn't going to happen. I was very grateful to everyone who helped me. The ambulance drivers were kind, helpful, and the doctor very good. Thank you everyone! read more

As a foreigner in another country your greatest fear is that you will have a medical emergency. We did, my daughter was having severe back pains while we were sight seeing in London and we needed to get it looked at before we left for Paris. The staff was amazing and so helpful. They never asked for insurance like they do in the US and they never turned anyone away. Thank you to everyone that helped make a bad situation better. read more

We are on holiday in London from Arizona in the USA. My daughter got a coin lodged in her throats and we knew we needed to be seen my a dr. From the moment we walked into the doors, we were tended to like she was the most important patient in the A and E department. A group of staff accompanied us to the children's A and E then remained with us, helping wipe her vomit, giving her a movie to watch and playing games with her to help her settle down. They were gentle, kind and gracious with us all throughout the entire experience. She was seen by an ENT after the X-ray revealed it was a large coin and would need to be removed under anesthesia using a scope. The communication and professionalism shown can not be overstated. It can be traumatic to see your child in pain and go under for surgery, but the doctors, nurses and staff here put me at ease in an otherwise stressful situation. We've had several emergency visits this year along with surgery back home in the US and I can see that what the English offer is outstanding.
