Mini's is amazing and I whole heartedly recommend parents/grandparents/etc. to bring their newborn to 3 year olds for this weekly playgroup even if you don't plan on having your children attend the school. It's very relaxed and you can come to as many or as few playgroups as you want. We sing songs in German, read books, have playtime that includes fun activities and gym time, and more. It's a wonderful way for new moms to get out of the house in a controlled and clean environment. And I'm sure once the kids get a bit older, a great place to get some fun activities in without the mess at home. I've found it so helpful to get myself speaking more German at home to my little one and he LOVES going every week.

Every year the Principal takes AWAY from these kids. Events are all run by PTO and volunteers except for choir concerts, science fair, art fair etc. and they do a decent job. I want to volunteer IN my kids class. But there aren't many opportunities for that as they reach higher grades. The principal is aloof and doesn't have a level of investment at the school. The staff (aside from her,) are wonderful. So caring and so supportive. She lacks follow up, initiative and just general CARE. She can't even pronounce the names of long term teachers. What garbage. That staff cares SO much for the students. And the Vice Principal SHOULD be running the show. She is everything a leader should be. I cannot even grasp how the Principal makes the salary she does with the true lack of care and investment in the school. My son has a year left and then we are moving on. Aside from her it's been wonderful but she has truly made the school LESS in every way.

They expect them to finish "school work" and "assignments" even though they are pre-school and there are no true assignments for that age. (At least there shouldn't be) We had our child in first grade at the beginning of the year and removed him due to many blatant circumstances... one was due to a combined 1st and 2nd grade experience which he wasn't prepared for the combined learning and greatly divided attention based on acumen. They said they treat both separately but we were sent home with homework that was NOT for a first grader. This brings up a greater issue. We believe this school thinks of themselves as a higher/further educational school for bright children. They are not. They give work to children without the teaching/learning they need to actually accomplish the work. Unless you are the culture/lifestyle that also teaches your child at home, your child may be lost or left behind at this school. This has by far been the most "by the book/rules" "school" that I have seen for CHILDREN as young as three years old. Do we really think that three year olds should "finish their homework"? Do three year olds even need homework!? I believe enrolling my son in this school was one of the worst decisions I have made in my raising him to this date. He has been thriving and multitudes happier since attending public school I can't imagine why he hated this school so much.

Parents think this school is so great... and the lunches SUCK! They gave me a moldy sandwich and I didn't notice it until my last few bites and I got food poisoning. I am so happy to be out of this school after so many teachers would tell their students to shut up. Not a great experience. ISP creates joy…read more Happy and educated children is what I see at ISP whenever I'm on campus. The combination of language immersion and IB education (inquiry-based) is amazing. These children come out with a global mindset treating others with respect snd care. We looked at a number of schools in Portland and ISP is the best. Seeing 5th graders graduate fully fluent in Spanish, Japanese or Mandarin is amazing. And hearing stories of ISP graduates in college and beyond who use the skills and language they learned at ISP daily, reaffirms why we believe this is the best school in Portland. Additionally, the location makes school accessible to families living all over Portland. Being centrally located (near public transit, bike paths, highways, etc.) means the students learn about city and have easy access to museums, theater, and more for field trips. An ISP education builds a strong foundation to help the next generations follow their dreams.

Not only does our daughter speak Spanish fluently like a native speaker, she can write proficiently in both English and Spanish. Our now seven-year-old child has achieved something neither of her parents have managed, which has been a huge confidence booster. Before enrolling her, we were concerned about whether she could succeed in learning a foreign language at such a young age and whether she might fall behind in other subjects. However, our fears were unfounded. She, along with her classmates, quickly picked up Spanish. Additionally, attending a diverse school where Spanish, Mandarin, and Japanese are predominantly used has allowed her to appreciate and celebrate different traditions and cultures. If you are looking for true diversity, you will have trouble finding more of it at any other school in the area. Remarkably, she and many of her classmates significantly outperform state averages in reading in English and math as evidenced by standardized test scores, demonstrating that language immersion has not hindered her overall academic progress. The inquiry-based learning process of the school's International Baccalaureate program has fostered her curiosity, creativity, and independent critical thinking. In one of her classes students can volunteer to present "mini-lessons" on topics of interest. Recently, she presented a lesson on DNA, displaying an impressive understanding of a complex subject that I didn't learn about until high school or college. I've also been impressed with the quality of her art classes. Unlike the simple arts and crafts of my childhood, she has learned about art history and various artists. When we visited a Frida Kahlo exhibit, she provided insightful commentary on Kahlo's background and influences. Similarly, she recognized the influence of Vincent Van Gogh in a painting by Edvard Munch, showcasing her knowledge and keen eye for art. The small class sizes not only provides more personalized attention from the teachers, it also fosters a culture of kindness (her class this year had a 12:1 student-teacher ratio, about half of what it is at area public schools). While the school is located in downtown Portland, it's a bit hidden. It's a safe oasis on a quiet dead-end street, easily accessible by bike, streetcar, MAX, bus, and car due to its central location. When we lived in The Pearl District, I could bike my daughter to school on dedicated bike paths for most of the route. If you are looking for a truly differentiated education for your child that will lay a foundation for them to thrive in a shrinking global community & economy I'd encourage you to check out the International School of Portland.
