On my quest to visit Albany's various graveyards, this was definitely the most mysterious (and my first stop). You can see the plots from the street, but it's all above a retaining wall that's a solid 15 or 20 feet high, so actually getting in was a challenge. Since the turn-off is so sharp and steep, I ended up parking next door and hiking up the hill.
This graveyard is eerie! I think it mostly had to do with the very, very overgrown lawns and grasses, combined with all of the mossy, broken, and even overturned headstones. It's pretty much the epitome of the stereotypical Halloween set--the perfect place where you'd want to go ghosthunting at night (especially since there are no lights), or the perfect place you'd want to stay away from after dark if you're a chickenshit like me.
The graves are old, but not as old as I expected, considering the age of Albany. Most graves are around mid-1800s through mid-1900s. I don't think I saw anything incredibly recent there. Also worth noting, this is a German Lutheran cemetery.
Don't let first looks deceive you, though. From the street, I thought this was going to be a super-small cemetery, but after walking around, it's actually quite huge. And very hilly. Bring water if you're going on a hot day.... read more
