I'm just a pilgrim going to all the Catholic Churches in the valley to let visitors know what to expect. St. Patrick's is a thoroughly post Vatican II Church. Architecturally it's a community center masquerading as a Church. The seating is arranged in a U shape around the elevated round table. I thought that Catholics " of a certain age" may have remembered being taught that, once having settled into a pew, time before Mass was meant to be directed toward mentally and spiritually preparing oneself for the great liturgies of Word and Eucharist. I must have walked in during the social hour by the sound of the chatter. As I looked around, I was struck by the fact that I couldn't find the tabernacle. I was reminded of the words of Pius XII "Christians will search in vain for the red lamp where God awaits them.... The only visible red lights were above the exit signs. The mass started and the servers marched in, some with their hands by their sides and eyes cast downward. The Confiteor wasn't said. No bells were rung during the consecration, nor was there any kneeling. If there is a loss of faith in the Real Presence, it surely isn't hampered by an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion wearing a "Best Dog Dad" t-shirt. The Recessional hymn was a clap your hands and sing along with a kind of Peter, Paul, & Mary song. By its website and social media, St. Patrick's seems to be a vibrant community. But for those visiting for the first time, you decide if it's a Catholic Church worth your time. read more

This is not a Catholic Church. The priest was seated during communion and lay ministers gave out communion at the back of the church. The full profession of faith is not said. Movie screens replace areas where artwork and sacred items would be. Irreverent congregation overall. read more

We were visiting from out of town and picked this church because it fit with our schedule. I was amazed and so inspired! I have never heard of a church focused on the difficulties of our time with such inspiration. I wish I could go there every week. As a lifelong Catholic, I felt inspired after leaving and definitely not bored. It was anything, but the usual humdrum rituals with nothing new or inspiring. Thank you for espousing Jesus's word as it was in the Bible. and not interpreted to fit the audience. read more

What a spiritual, uplifting Catholic Community! From the opening notes of the hymn, "All are welcome in this place", I knew how special Saint Patrick's was to me. "Let us build a house where love can dwell And all can safely live, A place where saints and children tell How hearts learn to forgive." There are so many things I want to share about coming here for 5 pm Mass. First is coming into their sacred space and hearing a first class Choir and musicians practicing . Their group also includes a pianist, a person on Keyboard and a very young College age drummer. They were great, and not just for the practice, but throughout the service. They all worked well together and didn't overwhelm the senses. The music of Paul Hillebrand and the heavenly voice of their Cantor Jill Bagshaw are incredible and needs to be experienced to be appreciated. "Let us build a house where prophets speak, And words are strong and true, Where all God's children dare to seek To dream God's reign anew." Second is the friendly parishioners who sat around me, including some long time friends. Even though Father Eric was away on vacation, the folk at Saint Patrick's didn't seem to miss a beat. Their ministry to the poor of spirit here in the valley is well known, particularly their efforts at Justa Center. But it's also the nearly four dozen other ministries, where they offering themselves as the hands and body of Christ, which makes you realize how special this community is. "Let us build a house where love is found In water, wine and wheat: A banquet hall on holy ground, Where peace and justice meet." I've come to Mass here many times and the Liturgy is wonderful. I have never felt this way in any other Catholic Church. It is so moving, to stand up and have the entire church hold hands for The Lord's Prayer, and I do mean everyone. It's special and I only wish I could convey how moving it is to feel the spirit in this church when it happens. It's just amazing to have over five hundred members standing, holding hands and reciting not a prayer by rote, but with feeling and love that makes it so special. An alive, joyful and welcoming church....actually, it can initially be a bit startling. However, if you have grown weary of attending Masses where you fight the urge to doze off, give St. Patrick's a try. I promise you will be spiritually awakened and even make some new friends. Their Masses are overflowing with congregants for a reason...the music, the homilies, the warmth and friendliness this parish exudes is none like I have ever experienced before. Just not a really friendly priest - Fr Eric. . I went to Fr Eric for some help & all I got was yelling. He certainly did not want to help- I felt like he was just annoyed that I was bothering him!!!! Would not recommend Fr Eric- the church is good- very nice congregation & surroundings! They lost their best priest, Fr Andrae, when he retired a few months ago. Big loss!!! read more

I wonder why this church does not allow reviews, other than it doesn't want the public to know what a terrible church it is. A few years ago I was in a bad way and had gone to St Patrick's to seek guidance, prayer, and help, while being homeless and short of fund. I met with church administrators and was told I was a liability and I should leave and not come back. Everything they say and write about turned out to be false, now I notice they no longer allow comments! I contacted the catholic office of Phoenix then and I plan to that same thing again today. Terrible church and priest. Maybe some changes need to take place over there. I have much more to say and report! read more

Please, if you are in any way a well-minded catholic, DO NOT GO TO THIS PARISH! (If I can even call it that). This is the most sacraligious establishment I have ever been inside of, and the priest, Fr Eric, does NOT hold up his priestly duties of properly teaching and guiding people into holy communion with Our Lord. Its obvious enough from the lack of a true crucifix or a tabernacle, but I also attended a wedding here a few months ago and the sight I witnessed almost brought tears to my eyes. Fr Eric ENCOURAGED everyone to come up to communion, specifically non-Catholics, and many people came up to grab the hosts and just shoved them in their pockets or walked away holding them. He didn't even administer the hosts, he just sat and clapped along while the band played some sing-songy horrible prod music. Such a disgrace to the catholic community and I pray every day for the poor souls who know nothing better than the monstrosity that Fr Eric is leading there read more

Love this parish, its members, the priests I've had the pleasure to listen to, and its beautiful atmosphere w/in the church and its surroundings outdoors. Parking isn't a problem, if you come early enough, and even if you are cutting it close to mass start times, the walk to the parish's doors isn't very far. If you plan on grabbing a bite to eat before or after mass, be sure to check St. Patrick's website before heading to church, as it will inform you whether the upcoming/current Sunday morning masses will be followed by donuts or a pancake breakfast, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, and coffee, sponsored by the coffee ministry. Speaking of coffee, I always see tables of (Fair Trade?) Justa coffee for sale on one side of the lobby. I need to leave the house a little earlier so that I will have time to ask someone about the coffee sold here. I'm assuming the profits support one or more of the church's many ministries... I attended Mass there when I was staying in Phoenix. It was a joyful experience, one in which I long for again. My months in town were made so special by being welcomed in this community. I attended every event I could and hold in my heart the people I met, the Pastor and the extraordinary beauty of the physical space in and out. This Community is an example of what an active worship group is about: Social justice, care of the sick and the poor, education for spiritual development, beautiful liturgy and an enlightened homily based on the scriptures. When tune into the liturgy from my home in Ohio I feel I am still a part of this Community. I have to add that I am saddened by the misunderstanding of some (or one) in the comments section who do not understand as Bede Griffiths says, "...the Church is to be judged, not by the forms of its doctrine or ritual, but by the reality of the love which it manifests". St. Patrick's manifests that Love . Also, I ask what is wrong with our loving Protestant Christians? I worship the DIVINE as do others in the way that the Divine has called them. Let's not lose sight of our divine responsibilities to move out and forward from a static Christianity to as Chardin would say, "...the realization of the soul's immense power". Keep expanding, emerging into the Christ purpose, to put on Christ. May the Peace, Joy, Love and Blessings of the Divine be upon you all and all those you hold dear. The pastor of St. Bernadette parish, when I told him I liked going to Mass here, told me to go there an not come back to St. Bernadette. Then the deacon who runs St. Bernadette told me to go away and to start going to therapy. Unlike St. Bernadette, St. Patrick is a welcoming parish that seeks to bring people to God. read more

Here is an example of a wonderful Catholic church where the culture and priest's homilies/attitude could be used as a template for other struggling churches. An email for those who choose to receive it tells about the upcoming readings to be reviewed before Mass, to get more out of the service. You are greeted at the church entrance by multiple staff and parishioners before even entering church.  At the beginning of Mass, the priest asks if anyone is a newcomer, then asks them to rise to be welcomed as the whole church applauds their arrival. An unparalleled beginning. As a sinner in the pew, it's refreshing the priest may reveal he is struggling with many issues of the lay people, Fr Eric doesn't shame the congregation with Catholic guilt, instead his sermons are uplifting and a reflection of how to live as Jesus did. Paul is the writer of many of the tunes and is nationally renowned, but down to earth and welcoming. The music he directs adds enthusiasm to the worship. I've been to Catholic churches all over the world and the St Patrick community is by far the best for my spiritual life. read more

This is a non-traditional Catholic Church that our family will go to from time to time if we are unable to attend our regular parish. It's very different than what we're accustomed to...so we don't come here very often. It takes some getting use to and requires an open mind to adjust to the differences. Father Eric is an amazing preacher. He easily relates to his parishioners. He is very funny. He makes the mass fun. I remember being an alter boy and going to Church as a youngster not really hearing or understanding what the heck the priest was talking about. Either because I was too young or he was too old. A couple times I had to nudge our priest to wake him up because he had fallen asleep during one of the readings. What exactly is a 'traditional' Catholic Church? Things are they same as they were 10 years ago. It's 2013 people. We have Smart TV's and smart phones. We even 'sing' the our father and hold hands during it! All the words of the mass are different! Things change, people adapt, and if you aren't changing and adapting for the better you get left behind. The new pope gets this, the Catholic Church is finally getting this, and Father Eric and St. Pats definitely gets this. I enjoy taking an hour and half out of my Sunday(8:30 mass before football of course) to listen and learn, and always walk away with a refreshing outlook on life. I am very pleased to say that St. Pat's a lively, wonderful place of worship that we have frequented throughout the past ten years. We love Father Eric's leadership, passion, and vision for this community. He is always challenging the membership to exceed expectations in terms of hospitality and stewardship. The variety of ministries available for parishioner participation are astounding; in particular, the quality of children's programs, especially the wonderful Vacation Bible School outreach, is SUPERB. The religious education teachers and administrators are incredibly kind, educated, and dedicated to their cause. What speaks the most profoundly to me about this parish is that we are ALWAYS welcomed by the people of St. Patrick Catholic Community, not matter if we have been "naughty" Catholics, not attending Mass as much as we should...indeed, this place is spiritually vibrant and we are always blessed when we do attend. read more

Was in Scottsdale for the weekend and could not miss Sunday mass. I saw that this church was near the hotel I stayed at and wanted to check it out. The parishioners were very friendly and welcoming. The choir at 10:30 am was very lively. The priest gave a beautiful homily. Beautiful church with semi round gathered seating. The priest walks around so you can see him from whatever side you sit at. Only thing that threw me off was that they didn't have any stations of the cross in the church. Will definitely be back here if I am in Scottsdale. read more

This is not Catholic. This is Protestant. One of the most irreverent churches I've ever been to. No stations of the Cross. When we attended a few years back, one of the priests, made a backhanded comment about how, when in need, "you can say as many Rosaries as you want, but" But what, Father!? I got up and left. Get it together. I'm sick of seeing The Most Blessed Sacrament, handed out like chips at a party, by women dressed for a party. And they wonder why there's almost no belief in the Real Presence. Start treating The Eucharist with the reverence He deserves. Bring back the communion Rail, and have THE PRIESTS perform ALL of the Mass. Offer more confession. I'd tell you to bring back Latin too, but the rest would be a start. The Mass is not a social hour, it's a solemn sacrifice. Get it together! read more

This is an amazing church. As others have said, very warm, welcoming, and Fr. Eric is fantastic. I don't know what people mean by "liberal." It's a church that follows Catholic teaching, the Pope, with great music, and an engaged core of children and teens. Do you mean social teachings about love, compassion, mercy, and forgiveness? Not a church goer at all, only reason I was here was for a friend's funeral mass. Great church community, just not for me.

We had a relative at the nearby hospital and wanted to go do Adoration so we Googled and found out that St. Patrick's Church had Adoration. We went inside and couldn't seem to find the Adoration area, with the Blessed Sacrament exposed. We realized that the Blessed Sacrament as well as the Tabernacle were not to be found in the Church or side chapel. We finally found an area that had what looked like a "tree". Upon further looking, realized that the Tabernacle was inside the "tree" but no lighted candle to signify the Holy Presence of Our Lord. It felt so irreverent. Then we saw that Mass was starting and went to attend Mass in the small chapel. No Tabernacle was present. The next evening we decided to attend 5 pm Mass. When we walked in, we weren't sure we were even in a Catholic Church. People were laughing, joking, chit-chatting, even kneeling backwards on the pews talking to others. There was no Tabernacle. No real crucifix. It felt like we were in an Evangelical Protestant revival meeting in a hotel banquet room. I was amazed at the lack of reverence. All the songs were like a rock festival....at the end of Mass, even the priest and deacon were on the altar clapping and swaying around. I'm sorry, but this is NOT what Mass is about. It's NOT about everyone "feeling good" and dancing around. It's NOT about being entertained. What has happened to our sense of awe and respect? There is a time and place for fellowship, being friendly, etc. etc. but it's NOT during the Mass. Our Lord suffered terribly for our sins, and it is WRONG to be acting the way they were at this Church during Mass. It's great that people are friendly and welcoming, but that should be saved for AFTER the Mass. The priest seemed to be all about himself...not very humble, and I hate to say it, but shame on him for making a mockery of the Mass. The Catholic Church does not need to "get with the times" Lord knows that has been wreaking havoc in our day and age..... People need to get back with the Church. If that's what people think the Church needs to do, then there are plenty of Protestant churches to fit their needs. I pray for Father, that he realizes the error in his ways.
