It's an older congregation primarily, but the childcare for families is very good, and they are responsive to needs of many groups. Services are friendly and welcoming - visitors are always there because of the proximity to the college and the historic area, and are always welcome. The church holds concerts and a ton of educational programs. The pastoral staff is caring and accessible. If you've relocated and are looking for a church home, or if you're just passing through the area, it's a great place to worship.

The…read moreweather kept most of the tourists at bay so I'm sure the Parishioner to Visitor ratio was high. The service was a classical Episcopalian service but without music. Probably because I am an early riser and attended the 8:00am service. For some reason they did not want participants to perform intinction (dipping bread in wine). In this post pandemic world, I don't know if that's for "health" reasons or if it's just a "house rule". Either way, it was novel for me. Definitely a wonderful living historical building that's almost a must visit location. I still remember a PBS woodworking show visiting to see the old carpentry in the building and would have loved to tour the building more on another visit.

I know church preferences are a lot like comfort food in many ways: extremely subjective and…read morepersonal. This review is based on Sunday, Oct 12th - but this is my church home. I hope this review conveys enough objective information for you to gain a sense of the community. St. Stephen ELCA is located right across from William & Mary on Jamestown Road (you can park in the W&M lot on Sunday Mornings). The proximity to the school certainly lends its flavor to this community. You will find college students, current and retired faculty, active and retired military, and lots of folks from around the country. These folks manage to worship together because they accept that all are simultaneously sinners and saints on the same journey. The service is fairly traditional liturgically speaking, and will be quite familiar to those from Catholic, Episcopal, and of course, Lutheran traditions. This particular Sunday the congregation recited an alternate Statement of Faith that I found spot-on, with all the 'traditional' values expressed through more contemporary words. Scripture is read within its historical context. The bulletin says that the Eucharistic Meal (Communion) is the "sacrament of [...] unity among all Christians" and that there are "no exclusions". There is a small choir - but the congregation sings too, usually led by pipe organ, with occasional piano. On this particular Sunday guitars led the communion hymns. There were at least two toddlers in attendance, and a play area is offered for those under 7 years old. There was a children's sermon. There is also a 'college room' for W&M students; during the academic year dinner is provided every Sunday.
