It's an older congregation primarily, but the childcare for families is very good, and they are responsive to needs of many groups. Services are friendly and welcoming - visitors are always there because of the proximity to the college and the historic area, and are always welcome. The church holds concerts and a ton of educational programs. The pastoral staff is caring and accessible. If you've relocated and are looking for a church home, or if you're just passing through the area, it's a great place to worship.

The…read moreweather kept most of the tourists at bay so I'm sure the Parishioner to Visitor ratio was high. The service was a classical Episcopalian service but without music. Probably because I am an early riser and attended the 8:00am service. For some reason they did not want participants to perform intinction (dipping bread in wine). In this post pandemic world, I don't know if that's for "health" reasons or if it's just a "house rule". Either way, it was novel for me. Definitely a wonderful living historical building that's almost a must visit location. I still remember a PBS woodworking show visiting to see the old carpentry in the building and would have loved to tour the building more on another visit.

I visited several Williamsburg area worship services before I found St. Stephen, which felt like…read morehome during my first visit. I wasn't even a Lutheran (!). During worship, the scripture readings and words of the sermon spoke to my heart, the joy of music touched me, and the sacrament of communion brought me peace. Following the worship service I was warmly greeted and welcomed. St. Stephen helps match folks with opportunities to volunteer their time and talents to help others. From the variety of opportunities, I found something (preparing/delivering meals for the housing insecure) to get involved in right away, as I wanted to begin to help make a difference. Starting with this one ministry, I began meeting others, learning of the community's needs, feeling a part of something larger, being a part of "God's Work. Our Hands." I've now been part of St. Stephen for five-plus years. I love that we are young families with kids, and, we are college students, singles, parents, and active retirees. There are many areas of social injustice that need our attention, our action. God does his "*greatest works through people with grateful, trusting hearts."
