Our family loves Mariemont. They have been there for us. We are a mixed family, Samoan, Mexican and…read moreItalian. While it is true that many people here are Caucasian, I don't feel like anyone discriminates against us. The teachers have embraced our family and the other parents in my son's classes are friendly with us. It's too bad that some have had a bad experience here. I haven't been involved with the PTA beyond volunteering at the fall carnival, etc. so I can't speak to the nature of the PTA members. Elizabeth Wahl is a good principal and she reached out to me when my son was in 1st grade to help me get him into Discovery Club. My advice: take advantage of what this school has to offer academically. If you're feeling like the PTA is exclusive and homogeneous, bring a friend to the meetings! This school has a lot to offer: STORM (Special Team of Role Models); Ms. Messner is one of the MOST AMAZING educators around town; and the people in the office CARE about the well-being of the students! This school is rated a 9 or 10 by www.greatschools.org, focus on what they have to offer academically.

So they diagnosed my son with a hearing issue stating this is what was wrong or it could even be…read moresomething developmental like ADHD. He was retained in grade K after we believed he sincerely had some type of issue since he only scribbled on papers, couldn't write well, wasn't able to read or put words/sounds together -- albeit he is a genius in math.He counts up to 200 and is 5... I took him to our Native American clinic for a screening and his pediatrician who didn't do his pre-K screening (vision and hearing) noted he hears fine, doesn't appear to have ADHD, and has a hard time seeing. I was shocked, a hard time seeing? They believed he was around 20/30 or 20/40 since he did poorly on the eye chart. Bless his pediatrician's office because he could only ready the 40 and 50's at the eye doctors without help, so they were very correct. So he has poor vision in his left eye where he needs nearly a +3.00 lense and his right eye is overcompensating for the issue and is also weakened where he needs a +1.50 in that eye. With his glasses on he clearly writes his name and can color... because he can SEE! Mariemont only wanted to blame some type of developmental issue or a hearing issue as his problem. I remember at one point being told the other kids had preschool and because he didn't that might be the issue. I stated preschool was out of our budget and I was reminded that the neighborhood is wealthier so the kids go to preschool... So their kids were automatically seen as better because they were rich and white. You'd think someone in the process would have tested his eyesight if he had a problem reading. It seems so, DUH! now but I am a first time parent dealing with an uptight school but they do this everyday so there is no excuse. I continue to state his teacher was awesome and did what he could but their administration and even other parents are the nightmare there. I am on the fence for him returning I can't do to it him even though they are considered a "good school" they are not a good school for someone with a mixed ethnic background whose parents don't net 100k+ a year.

My step-son is brilliant but undisciplined and he was allowed to "graduate" sixth grade without doing any work at all and only getting "1's" and "2's" his whole career there. My oldest step-child would've succeeded anywhere anyhow and still does..... My fifth grade daughter has had much the same experience as my son until this year. This year I've been heavily involved and her teacher is very communicative and the difference has been huge. The school goes on wonderful field trips in every grade. The music program is awesome, my daughter has class for 30min 3x's/week and is learning quickly. The office staff are typically rude. The parking lot ( pickup / drop off ) is well managed and there is a great focus on child safety and using crosswalks. There's also a crossing guard and a " lighted?" Crosswalk just for school goers. P.E. is not a large focus but I believe funding is gone for health at most elementry schools. The children do have a large field, two playgrounds, ball courts, basketball courts and a basebal / kickball backstop. The surrounding area is typical for the city except that there is an outpatient psychiatric facility about 1 mile up mission avenue. There are people often in the area that " act weird " but I've heard of nothing harmful from them. I would rather my daughter been in a different school for all previous years but I am happy with her, her teacher and myself right. I wouldn't choose to enroll another child in this school but I'm alright with my daughter finishing out this year there.

This district knows how to teach! The schools are safe and well maintained by the operations staff. When I go by campuses now, I see HVAC workers on the roofs and custodians cleaning classrooms in preparation for the school year. It's good to know that there are people actively workin g behind the scenes to help facilitate the safety of our children.

The district hires and retains inexperienced, rude, unmotivated, privileged teachers set in their ways, racist staff, and have discriminatory practices. I am a parent of 4 students who attended schools in the district since 2008 and it has only gotten worse. My youngest is at Rio Americano and the culture is toxic and dysfunctional. His counselor Sydnee Butcher needs training and support as an academic guidance counselor. Doesn't surprise me being trained by Elizabeth Irwin. When Sydnee first appeared last year, she was very vocal about change and supporting students. She stated she once was a student there and her experience there allowed her to identify areas of improvement. My experience with her is that is far from the truth. Sydnee doesn't perform any research nor does she fact check. She just blindly regurgitates what Elizabeth feeds her. My son is in a unique position and has aspirations for which he has set goals. While trying to reach those goals, Sydnee and Elizabeth have only worked to hold him back with hard stops. They are not helpful at all. You would think your academic guidance counselor wants students to succeed and instead of delivering hard stops, they will use their discretion (they have levels of discretion) to find ways and create opportunities to support students success. If you are able to get your children into a different district. Please do so. You will not regret it. If you are not able, please listen to your children, the teachers and staff lack integrity.

My daughter has been attending El Rancho since Kindergarten, she is now in 1st grade. We have had such a positive experience with both the leadership staff and teachers. Due to the small class sizes, teachers are able to recognize the specific needs of each child and challenge them academically. My daughter also gets to experience learning Spanish, music, and P.E., as El Rancho also offers this in their curriculum. It is so fun to see her so self- confident when she learns a new language! El Rancho offers an amazing before and after school program, which was one of the biggest positives for the choice in enrolling our child at El Rancho. It is structured with staff involvement with organized games, crafts and study hall for upper grades. Working in healthcare, hours can get a little crazy and knowing El Rancho is available almost every day of the year is amazing! El Rancho continues to promote core values and good morals into our daughter, which is invaluable to her in her elementary school years. If you are looking for a school "home" for your child, I encourage you to visit El Rancho!
