After frequently being lectured (i.e., yelled at) every time we went to mass at the church that is five minutes from our house, we realized that we needed some place else to go. Several people over the past several years had mentioned St. Michael the Archangel and so we finally decided to drive the 20 minutes to go there one Sunday.
No one got yelled at. Not once. There was no diatribe about how awful we were nor did the priest mention how many languages he could speak after regaling us with tales of his most recent travels abroad . Rather this priest, kept the message simple and delivered it in a way that was conducive to hearing what he had to say. Father Dave may be well past retirement age, but he's an actual God-send to this parish.
His jokes are funny and he even welcomes the sounds of a crying baby (for how else will children grow to be a part of the parish if they are always sent away to a cry room?). He is kind and down to earth. You don't feel like he's so much holier that you are and you often leave feeling hopeful , not further burdened by how great of a sinner you are.
It's too early for me to say much about the religious education classes. So far with the younger students there's been a good deal of coloring and workbook pages. They do community service projects each month and during the school year there seems to be a guitar choir that enlivens the music on Sundays. It is a smaller community, not a huge congregation like they have at our Lady of Good Hope, for example. So, if that's something you're looking for, this may be the place for you.
