Wedmore's magnificent parish church encompasses over 800 years of history and has many features of…read moreinterest. Wedmore first enters the history books as the place where, after the battle of Edington in 878, King Alfred signed a peace treaty with the Viking, Guthrum. The present church dates largely from the 15th Century, although its south door is from around 1200 and the South East Chapel and Chancel date from around 1300. The church comprises a spacious nave and aisles of 5 bays, with a south aisle chapel and north and south chancel chapels. The roofs of the South aisle chapel and North chancel chapel date from the 15th Century, the latter has the remains of some painted decoration. From the exterior, it's robust central crossing tower is a notable landmark. The church has some furnishings of interest: a 14th Century font, a well-preserved 15th Century wall painting of St Christopher; a classic 17th Century Jacobean pulpit; and some interesting memorials. My favourites were the brasses to George and Thomas Hodges of 1684 and 1583 - George depicted in a fine cavalier outfit. The church has a regular cycle of services: on Sundays the 10:30 services are delivered in a variety of styles, from traditional Eucharists to an informal cafe style church.

This seems to be the aim of Freedom Church in Hereford. From the welcome team on the door, through the VIP host team (paying particular attention to first-timers with a building tour, answering any questions & even giving you a top quality proper coffee after), the cafe team (as good as Starbucks and cake to die for) and the Connect Team - you've not even got into the auditorium! The services are never dull, with modern music (not Lord of the Dance modern!), creative sections (usually a video piece) and top class preaching. I challenge you to at least try it!

There's enough food for an army at bargain basement prices, and you might leave feeling spiritually nourished too, if that's your sort of thing.

It looks like most churches built during the same time period. The cemetery is maintained with many broken and illegible markers. Short walk from commons area along the waterfront to the church.

The Church dates back to 1210 and is apparently Stratford's oldest building. This is one of the "don't miss" stops on any tour of Stratford-upon-Avon and a £1.50 donation to the inner church is well worth it. Even aside from the Shakespeare part of it, this is a beautiful and very old church that still has an active service schedule. The hallowed ground is completely full and there are many very old gravestones right along the path. And the path, by the way, is also laid over other graves. Lots to learn from and photograph, I'm very glad we stopped here.

The current building was built in 1499 in a Gothic style with additions and repairs made through time. The fan vaulted ceiling (added in the 1500's) is beautiful. Over 3000 people are buried in the floor of the Abbey but the actual number of markers are 891. An additional 635 memorials line the walls of the Abbey, telling stories of the people of Bath. I was touched reading these stories. The Abbey, like many others in the U.K., suffered extensive damage during the Reformation. The monks were dispelled during that time and the Abbey became a local Church of England restored by the people of Bath. The building suffered damage again during the bombing Blitz of WWII and required restoration. Very little of the stained glass is original. Admission to the Abbey was £9. An audio tour is available and a pamphlet with tour stop information. For £18, a guided tour of the tower is available, but we didn't have time for that tour. In the basement is a small museum that houses the chronology of the site and some artifacts. A gift shop featuring local goods is accessible to all visitors. On the outside of the building, damage by vandalism to many of the figures over the doors is apparent. The building has endured through some tough times. I hesitate to mention the minor presence of modern clutter throughout the Abbey. For me, the clutter distracted from the history of the building. But the church is active for worship by local residents. The Abbey is well worth a visit if you like history and architecture. Plan an hour plus and wear comfortable walking shoes. Photos are allowed. Restrooms are available.
