At the time of its foundation Garway was the most powerful Templar church in the Welsh Marches. Garway always held the right of Sanctuary. Much altered the rounded foundations of the earlier part of the Templar church were uncovered by excavations in the 20th century, and can be viewed to the north of the current nave. Garway is the only visible circular nave remaining in England. St Michael, Garway, is composed of a nave, chancel, and south chapel, joined to a detatched 70 foot high tower by a 17th century passage. Many masons of medieval times were not sure if the old gods were gone so most churches have pagan images..even cathedrals. Garway has a typical example in a Green Man; a figure of a grinning human head with foliage emerging from its mouth. Much other symbolism abounds ..above the piscina are images of a consecrated wafer, a winged chalice, a fish and what is thought to be an eel or lamprey. So much to find and see. Yes there are symbols in churches but not of the Dan Brown sort. If the population could not read then give them pictures. Art has symbolism with meanings so why not architecture? To me it was a fascinating place but then not everyone is as geeky as me. If you are go you will love it.
