"Old Saint Mary's" opened in 1763 and is one of the nation's earliest churches and the first Roman Catholic cathedral in Pennsylvania. Many of the earliest worshippers included members of the Continental Congress and other public figures attended services on occasion at the church, since it was the city's most prominent Catholic church at the time. Among them were George Washington and John Adams. This was quite a thing back in the day as there was some anti-Catholic sentiment in Colonial America. The Continental Congress attended services several times as a sign of respect for the Catholic countries of France and Spain, America's allies during the Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, the building was secure on this weekday evening. I was only able to appreciate it from the outside. If you do have the opportunity to visit, the 18th century baptismal font is worth checking out as are the beautiful stained glass windows. My cousin recently had her wedding ceremony in this church, and the architecture was stunning. The space itself is vast and ornate. The stained glass windows were gorgeous. We all snapped some great photos. Comments: There is no air conditioning. Doors are left open, which raised the decibel level substantially. Hearing city traffic, police sirens, etc during a wedding ceremony is a bit of a bummer. However, the space was so beautiful it is well deserving of 4 stars.
