I think it really depends on the teacher on whether you get a good education and learning experience in that class. I have a social teacher this year who is amazing and goes super in depth in topics, it has made me appreciate social studies so much. But my other teachers have been hit or miss. One teacher was extremely ego centered and I don't think we could go five minutes without them bragging about how good they were in that subject. It made it extremely difficult to learn and want to learn that subject. One thing I really appreciate about MAC is the passion teachers have. I used to go to St. Mark Junior High and it was the most awful experience, so going here made everything feel so much better and I felt like I belonged with my peers and teachers being more passionate about school. I do have some concerns about the English department, but I don't think it's affected me as much as my peers since I've always been stronger in English. I would also say that MAC is not nearly as hard as they say it is. I know there is a huge pressure coming to this school and you have to apply, but a lot of kids aren't getting 90s all the time. Half the time most people aren't even fully getting 80s. So don't feel too much pressure. Overall I would recommend this school! Some of the teachers aren't as nice, and if you are coming by yourself it can be challenging to make friends. But if you are open to putting yourself out there and not being solely focused on academics then I think you'll do good at MAC. One thing you need to know: there will be so much unnecessary pressure from your peers. Just focus on yourself and achieve to the best of your abilities! Don't try and work yourself to the bone. 9/10 that only makes the stress, no sleep, and anxiety about tests and schoolwork worse. Most importantly: just because your at MAC doesn't mean you need top marks! Just try your best! ONE THING I WOULD CHANGE PLEASE: As someone who is Scottish, I find it extremely offensive to have a PERSON as a mascot. Why not an animal like normal schools? This just seems off and everyone I know at the school has said something about how creepy and offensive it is.

Overall, I don't think I regret spending my "good years" at Shep, even if a lot of my friends went to other high schools on the north side of town. While it wasn't the same without peers I really knew, Shep still had its good qualities. They have an amazing department of staff who really know their stuff. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is available here, full and partial, along with one of the best drama and music school programs in the city. Of course, it wasn't just all about the arts; Shep has a kick-ass football and basketball team too. As a result, it's a very competitive school. I think it's always in silent rivalry with Archbishop and Old Strathcona. The school has two floors, with a library and study space on each level. Cafeteria space is limited but serves decent lunch surprises, if my memory hasn't faded completely. The school gym is also equipped with a full-fledged fitness centre for students, to ensure physical health in addition to mental and intelluctual stimulation. Shep also has a great location, right in between the Woodcroft and Westmount areas. The Westmount shopping centre (notice I didn't say mall) is across the street, and the bus terminal is right outside the school parking lot. The Woodcroft library is just across the football field, and the school is also conveniently located beside the Peter Hemingway pool and fitness centre, and Coronation Park. After all, it's all about location, location, location. So I'm proud to say that Shep was my high school. The IB program really helped me prepare for university, as it got me into my study habits early. I still remember some of my teachers here, from time to time. They're the teachers who really stand out in my memory, and who I believe helped make a difference in my life. Thanks for the memories, Ross Shep!

I attended this place, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. In a matter of months I've managed to accomplish way more then I've ever did in high school. The best thing about this school was the amount of support from the staff there. I've met a lot of great people as well, from all walks of life. I really didn't have to pretend to be someone else that I wasn't , and that's what made my experience here so much better. Even to this day. I carry those experiences with me as they've helped me grow as a person. If you're someone who's trying to upgrade and start fresh. Please don't hesitate to attended . Take that leap forward! They genuinely care. They put in extra time and effort to see you succeed. For anyone who may have not cared about grades in high school or made some mistakes, this is the best place to do your upgrading. They atmosphere is very much like a high school with a bit more of a mature feel to it. There are plenty of food courts and cafes around so the food is great. There is also a fantastic little coffee/sandwich place right in the building. They have the best tuna sandwiches ever! It's a really great place. They care about education. The building is nice. The food is good. What more could you ask for?!

Although Scona is often made fun of for it's "bathroom" appearance - the walls are green tile and it does have a bathroom feel to it because of that, it's a great school. I loved that Scona had different floors (students get a bit of exercise in between sitting at desks all day). I also love the surrounding grounds. Students are always outside enjoying the sun (when we have sun). It's a really nice area. There are also not as many students at Scona as there at Ainlay. That was a huge thing for me because I don't like being a number. I like knowing my teachers and trusting them. I like a more personal experience. In fact, I went to a memorial a few years ago that was for one of my former teachers from Scona. She passed away from cancer and there were a lot of former students there to honor her. It was nice to see. I also love how Scona emphasizes the student in student-athlete. I always had to keep my grades up to be on the basketball team. And I found that the sports teams (at least the ones I was on) focused more on personal development, hard work and discipline than winning. It was refreshing and it was wonderful! I really enjoyed my years at Scona. It's a great school.

However, I feel the school's administrative staff--including the principal and vice principals--have failed to effectively support the potential of these programs, particularly for students with unrecognized learning disabilities, mental health challenges, or those simply in need of greater communication and understanding. Throughout my time at Saint Joseph's, I often felt unheard and dismissed by office staff. I enrolled in 2023 specifically for the GCL program. Unfortunately, due to my own struggles, I fell behind and transferred to Cardinal Collins. However, I was told I would be able to return to Saint Joseph's for Grade 11. While I was there in Grade 10, I was placed in the foods program--a class that became overwhelming for me due to sensory overstimulation. I asked to be transferred to a different class because I had floor all day other then my foods clad at the end of the day, but my request was ignored by the office. Despite explaining my challenges, they didn't consider it a valid reason to change my schedule. They also don't let students in general change there schedules unless it's a within a certain timeframe but I believe it's not enough time for actual figure out if you like that class Along with that in grade 10 a girl who happened to be on the spectrum took a picture up my skirt, along with many other girls with picture proof of her, taking pictures of others up their skirts AND the school found pictures on her phone up many girls skirts/dresses and we were simply told that they cannot make a criminal case out of it because she is autistic and doesn't understand the social rights and she went completely unpunished and was walking around the school with her phone the next day I wasn't looking for a criminal case I was looking for punishment discipline, some type of action to show her it's not right because the only way they will learn is by being taught that that is not right I was violated. I felt extremely violated and many other girls felt violated because of this girl. when my parents called about it, they were simply told we can't give information about other students away even though said student took a picture of my skirt. Returning in Grade 11, my parents had to advocate on my behalf to get me back into Saint Joseph's, specifically for the cosmetology program. That year, I also faced issues in my English class (a Grade 10 course), where my teacher did not support my use of Student Services--even though I struggle with reading, writing, and anxiety. A meeting was held with my parents, teacher, and a vice principal, and while we created a plan, it ultimately didn't help me much. In Science 24 during second semester, I experienced ongoing harassment from another student, who was 18 (I'm 16) despite making it clear I wanted to focus on learning. I brought this to my teacher as well as Student Services, but they had no authority to intervene. I then brought it to the office staff multiple times, and nothing was done to protect my learning environment. There were also instances where I needed space to emotionally regulate, and instead of being supported, I was punished being sent home at the very beginning of the day despite asking to calm down in student services and then go to my class Along with that a male was in the female bathroom and even after I brought a picture proof to the school, the school constable talk to this person, and the person simply said I'm trans and the cop told us that they cannot do anything about it (same one who said that about the girl who took pictures up skirts) now I am not trans phobic but saying you're trans so you can be in the female bathroom with your female friends so you can vape and yap WHAT THE F**K and it's not like he was trying to put effort in to make himself look trans He was gay. He was very openly gay.

It's funny how a few students called out this place and it got them scared of being exposed. Well I'm here to tell you all, that I endured this hell from this place back in 2010 to 2012. The classes were segregated in the basement, so I was essentially trapped and isolated. This forced separation led me to lie and pretend I wasn't in Special Ed to avoid being looked down upon or bullied. It really sucked that I had to lie to make friends. As a result, I had to suppress my emotions, which led to feelings of isolation, inadequacy, and hopelessness. I felt like more of an outsider. My personal growth was severely stunted for years as a result. The core issue lies with the program's lack of care and low expectations. Instead of providing a supportive environment, they would essentially just throw students into work experience programs without even earning a proper education. I never received credits for the 3 years that I attended, never gotten a spar block, got ghosted when I wanted to attend summer school, and never got a diploma. The only thing that I ever achieved in this school was not committing suicide or getting heavily involved in subsistence abuse. After leaving this hell hole, life was really hard. I had to play catch up and I was lost for years. I ended up going to Centre High and that place treated me like actual person instead of a fucking toddler. It really opened up my eyes to the fact that St. Joes and everyone there absolutely failed me. They fed me lies for 3 years and told me there's nothing for me out there. Well, I'm here to say that all the teachers, and the principle can go fuck themselves.
