Phipps grew up with Andrew Carnegie as a friend and neighbor. As an adult, he became Carnegie's business partner in the Carnegie Steel Company and as a result became very wealthy. The Phipps family donated to the town of Palm Beach one of the most significant gifts in county history, an ocean to lake property that is now known as Phipps Park. The Phipps family had established public parks in Palm Beach and in the New York area. Phipps Park on the St. Lucie Canal was made possible with a land trade involving Michael Phipps which resulted in the public recreation facility. Michael, born January 10, 1910, in England was also associated with the St. Lucie Training Track for thoroughbred horses on SR 76. He passed away on March 13, 1973. Phipps Park is part of the St. Lucie South Recreation Area which has a 55 acres of camping and conservation land on the Okeechobee Waterway. In 2006 FEMA installed 35 traditional primitive campsites, and 24, 20-amp electric sites during the 2006 hurricanes when the park was being used for FEMA housing. Campground renovations began in 2018 and continue to this day. There are now 99 RV sites and 19 adventure tent sites that come with canvas tents. In the park you will also find hiking trails, fishing pier, a new boat ramp and dock, showers, laundry facilities, picnic pavilions, and restrooms. This park is popular with anglers who enjoy fishing both fresh and salt water. Next to the camping area is the St. Lucie Lock and Dam built in 1941 and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers .The lock was built for flood control replacing the natural outflow of the St. Lucie River from Lake Okeechobee. This waterway is now part of a cross-Florida navigational route connecting the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Okeechobee and on to the Gulf. On the north side of the lock, the one mile St. Lucie Nature Trail traverses in a one mile loop through a subtropical forest next to a primitive group campsite. There is also a volunteer manned visitor's center which provides information on the history of the lock and the local ecosystem. With the historic lock, fishing options, and hiking trails, Phipps Park is worth exploration even if you don't plan on staying overnight to camp.

You could drive for 30 minutes and still not see everything! We stopped by on a weekday and the park was pretty and relaxing. Not too many people on the couple of trails we did. The observation tower is closed but they still have a nice boardwalk up to that area that makes for a great walk! It's pretty highly elevated for Florida - kind of impressive in person! Entry is $6 per car, and the lady provided a map and recommended her favorite trail. We checked that trail out as well (the white trail), but the height of the observation tower trail was really the star! We decided to drive around after doing both trails, and we saw their campgrounds. So surprising at how busy this place was! It seemed there was hardly an empty spot! Must be a happening place to camp! We'd definitely return for more adventures, as this is a cool park!

We never did anything to get in trouble the 3 years I lived there. They gave one ridiculous violation because the house number on trash bin (which is 1 on the house and 2 on the trash bin on ground) had been sun bleached out but the number on the house was CLEARLY readable. This place is ruined by the rude snowbirds. Rude security staff (except Brooke she is amazing) they gave anyone who came out a hard time. We called everyone in even had to call in doordash bc they wouldn't let them come in. All together the only thing worth it out there is the views and amenities at the clubhouse. The people act like pure trash to anyone they don't deem old enough for "their island." They even threw a fit for owners trying to Airbnb their homes when they were not in town God forbid they stayed less than 1 month at a time. Can't wait for the old stuck in their ways people to die off and stop discriminating against "young people". The snowbirds were the worst there the mindset is its mine and you shouldn't be here even though my husband and I were residents year round. 100% reason why we didn't purchase a place out there. Stop discriminating and MAYBE they can be seen as great place.

We were able to put our big ole truck next to the rig easily. It was super quiet and everyone was friendly. The owners are very kind and caring. They seem like they enjoy what they are doing. The only reason I gave this park a four instead of a four five is there are no laundry facilities or bath house. Although we didn't need either, it's good to know in advance so you can be prepared. It takes about 15 minutes to get into town. Not many good restaurants nearby but we decided to cook. We also perused the flea market. There are gators in the lake, so you don't want to swim in the lake! Wifi, outdoor pool, pet friendly, gated. Although not many amenities, but there is a big tiki by canal equipped with outdoor seating, great for chilling and hanging out with friends. Big dog park for our fur baby to run freely. Dog bags are provided through out the park, very thoughtful. However there's no trash by the dog park or anywhere near by to throw away. Can only go to big dumpster. We love this park! It's a great location for weekend getaway for us. We are thinking of coming here once a month!
