Our dog had open sores full of puss in her feet and respiratory problems. The Princess Animal Hospital refused to swab our dog's feet at our request to find out what the bacteria was. They did not offer our dog sedation to calm her breathing and reduce her pain. They refused to provide us with an emergency referral to a hospital in Toronto. They did not tell us what was wrong with her feet. The Princess Animal Hospital prescribed our dog antibiotics. About a week later I took our dog back to the Princess Animal Hospital, and paid them hundreds more dollars to look at her feet again because the antibiotics that they had prescribed were not working. Again, I asked them to take a swab of her feet. Again, the Princess Animal Hospital refused to take a swab, this time saying they could not do it because they had already placed her on antibiotics. Again, they did not offer our dog sedation to calm her breathing and reduce her pain. Again, they refused to provide us with an emergency referral to a hospital in Toronto. Again, they prescribed more of the same antibiotics. We still had no idea what was wrong with our dog's feet. A few days later our dog's feet were even worse. I gave her an epsom foot bath and skin from her feet fell away leaving bone. We freaked out! I phoned the Princess Animal Hospital. They offered to prescribe more of the same antibiotics. Why would we pay hundreds of dollars more money for another exam and more of the same antibiotics which were obviously not working? We immediately took our dog to an emergency hospital in Toronto without a referral. What the Princess Animal Hospital did to our dog was INHUMANE!!! INHUMANE!!!

She was a brand-new patient and needed quick action. The wonderful team and Dr. Farooq accommodated her in a timely fashion, made her feel comfortable and gave her a rigorous physical examination. She was able to have an x-ray immediately, which detected that her digestive system had stopped working. After more review by a radiologist and testing, Dr. Farooq had a hunch that it may be a reversible condition despite not showing the full suite of symptoms. He was right. An additional test proved it and she improved immediately after great treatment and monitoring. He also caught a treatable painful spinal condition that we assumed was just aging. She will be more comfortable during her remaining years. My family feels fortunate we went to GRAH because the outcome could have been very different without the diagnosis. In addition to great care and diagnostics, Dr. Farooq thoroughly explained the costs and took care to limit any unnecessary costly procedures. Thank you GRAH team!

If you want to feel guilty for the rest of your life,…read more I made an appointment for my tiny chihuaha due to her chronic dry cough and to inform she has been a light eater otherwise happy and playing every day. During the exam appointment Dr. Christine Loomis also noticed a heart murmur. As my dog is a light eater being 1.68 kg and 16 years old without a blood test she could even have kidney issues. I asked Dr. Loomis a couple of times if she would like to have transferred Cocos last exam results and xrays from a few months back. To give her background information. She did not pursue my request. I informed Dr. Loomis a bit of honey helps her throat as otherwise she is happy. I informed also that she is an inside dog, even going to the bathroom inside as she is peepy pad trained. So even though it sounds like kennel cough I do not believe it would be. Heart murmur signs are dry coughing, light eating!! I was prescribed hydrocodone .4ml for 7 days. This medication is for collapsed trachea and kennel cough. Again my dog is only 1.68 kg size of a small rabbit. She was not prescribed anything for the heart murmur that was noticed. I called their office after giving Hydrocodone for one day to inform them that her stool is dark and tarry looking and that she doesn't like the medication. They said to put it in a dish for her to lick it up and if that doesn't work to mix with her food. The VCA website online states that this medication should be given with caution in geriatric pets. She being 16 years old is very geriatric and not to pets with underlying kidney disease. This medication should not be prescribed without a blood test. As I did not want to have a blood test done at this time, she should not have encouraged medication as I was ok continuing giving my dog a bit of honey for the cough. After 7 days I went to the emergency room with her as she became lethargic and the emergency vet said she is going through kidney failure based on her blood tests. To wait if she improves which I so was praying for. A few days later her shallow fast breathing showed her heart murmur went into heart failure. *I wish I had been prescribed medication for her heart murmur instead of kennel cough. She was then put to sleep on the same day by Dr. Christine Loomis without giving her a sedation first (a small needle in the fleshy part of the leg), so that your/any animal is not in distress while the clipper busses off hair in which the catheter will be placed for the euthanasia. *I would suggest to ask any veterenarian for this sedation! I did not know that they would not automatically sedate her a little so she wouldn't know what was happening to her. *As my mother's vet did this as a normality, they even let her hold her instead of an assistant vet technician. This veterinarian did not do it for my little weak dog. They had an assistant hold her neck until little tears came from her eyes. While they put in the catheter, and then some saline water to test that there is no blockage...I was with her and in front of her and giving her calming messages like I love you, I love you..they did let me do that. The technician I am sure has no intention on hurting any animal, but without any pet parent sharing information like this there will not be any improvement and changes for future geriatric tiny breed dogs that may be in the same situation as my tiny old fur child in their office. I needed to ask a few times that my wishes are to have her on my lap while the euthanization takes place. I was then hesitantly allowed to do so but while the cathadar was put in I was not allowed to hold her. I informed Dr. Loomis that my mother was allowed to do so with her dog. *Thinking it would be one needle like my mother's dog experience. My weak tiny dog of 1.68 kg had 3 full needles injected through the catheter which were stuck in her skinny tiny legs barely skin on bones as she had not been eating due to medication reaction. (small rabbit size) Dr. Loomis gave 3 full needles very quickly. First one again saline water, second needle sedation, third needle euthanasia. I noticed her passing after she gave the second needle through the catheter. Her little angel heart (size of a pinky finger tip) could not take the volume and the pressure any more. What my little girl was going through the last moments of her life. I will never forget!! I will feel guilty for going to this office, for giving her the prescribed kennel cough medication, and for not asking for her to be sedated before the buzzing of the hair clippers started. I WANTED TO DO RIGHT BY HER INSTEAD I FEEL I DID WRONG!

Very rude staff totally disorganized. Did not know how to handle a insurance claim. I spent a great deal of time with my insurance company getting the correct information and forms needed. I was told by the hospital that paperwork was already sent in to insurance, just to find out that NO paperwork had been sent. After which I contacted the hospital and tried to call explain the proper procedure and forms required. At this point I started getting pushback (this was the receptionist) I asked to speak with the person sending in the paperwork and was told I had to relay the information thru her. I also was told I was being rude and pushy. Obviously, I will have to find a new vet and start all over at a financial cost to me. I just don't want anyone to go thru what I have been through. Too many other great vets out there.

Dr. Edwards went above and beyond, consulting specialists, calling labs, and doing research to figure out what was wrong with our cat. We never received a bill for all this effort. She clearly laid out which tests were most urgent, which could wait, and recommended the most cost-effective tests to try to rule out possible diagnoses before moving on to the more expensive tests. When we finally received a diagnosis, she spent a lot of time working with a specialist in Toronto to come up with a treatment plan and researching special foods (kangaroo meat). Always available by email and phone, the team was quick to answer our questions, checked in with us frequently, and taught us to administer medications at home, even though it took a few visits for us to master the techniques. Now that we have left Kingston, we are struggling to find a new vet as competent and compassionate as Dr. Edwards. The team at Barriefield sets a very high bar.
