I rushed my pom into his hospital in complete hysteria and they immediately jumped into action to try to save her life. Unfortunately she was already dead. I wasn't a patient of his clinic but he still welcomed me. He spoke very comforting words in my time of distress. I was a complete train wreck losing my furbaby but Dr. Neilson remained calm and showed me empathy. He didn't charge me. He helped me make funeral arrangements and allowed me as long as I need to grieve in the room with my dog. I could really feel the love and care Dr. Neilson has for animals and humans. This veterinarian would tell me to give him another 5 tablets after a seizure, even if he had just had a scheduled dose... He was poisoning my puppy! He would keep telling us that the dog wouldn't make it to 2 years of age...well he wouldn't be alive if I had kept going to that loser. Rue is now 4 years old, still suffers from seizures but not like he was. This idiot needs to retire.

She was extremely kind and I was very surprised when she asked me numerous times how I was doing. The way she communicated with me was amazing and I felt that she truly cared about me and Coco. I could tell that she knew how important my little Coco was to me and that meant a lot. Dr. Hake also took the time to discuss the next steps and answer my plethora of questions. Due to Covid-19 we could only chat via phone call, but she stayed on the line with me for close to 30 minutes discussing the diagnosis and next steps. I was offered one of their Canine Wellness Packages, and while the flyer was helpful, I didn't receive much detail about the terms, conditions, or exclusions beyond what was printed. I like to fully understand what I'm signing up for, especially when it comes to annual plans. I purchased the $432 Wellness Package, which includes two comprehensive wellness exams, two intestinal parasite screenings, internal organ function screening, and 5% off additional services. The flyer shows there is also a $663 Enhanced Package, but I wasn't offered that option during my visit. For reference, I spent $3,557.73 last year on my middle‑aged chiweenie, and the wellness plan saved me $1,404.59 -- which is impressive for a healthy dog with no chronic conditions. She only had a few minor issues like diarrhea from eating something she shouldn't have. I can see how this plan might be even more valuable for dogs with chronic medical needs, but for my situation, it was still a meaningful savings. I have had some nightmare-ish experiences with other boarding places, such as forgetting to administer heart medicine multiple days to 3rd degree sunburns from letting my boy be outside all day long to nearly losing my pittie from an allergic reaction (staff had to throw water on her to wake her up, she was so out of it & nonresponsive I had to rush her to the emergency vet.) So with that said, believe me when I say I am picky now as to who cares for my fur kids. The owners of The Barking Birch are amazing. They are good people, trustworthy & know a lot about dogs & love dogs. But it's not just enough to love dogs to do this work, it takes knowledge about dog breeds & skill reading body language, which the owners have. It is not easy sometimes supervising a playgroup of dogs, they are like toddlers! They have multiple huge play areas to separate by personality & lots of toys & playground equipment. What I like is that there's play time, nap time, then more playtime before bed. Nap time is important because some dogs get too worked up and/or cranky with all day constant play. I also love that the dogs sleep on comfy cots in their individual suites rather than an open sleep arrangement that's becoming more popular. They can rest well & are safe tucked in their suites. Most importantly, your dog will not just be one of 75 or 100 dogs like the bigger places. They get one-on-one attention which is so important to me. I don't worry a bit when I leave them, which is HUGE for me, because I can be kind of a control freak when it comes to my kiddos. My dogs tell me that they love this place too, because whenever I arrive to pick them up, they could care less about coming home with me! Last time, they both saw me & my girl was like oh hai ma & jumped on a chair to relax & my boy grabbed a toy & paw'ed the door to his suite open to accomplish his mission of stealing all the toys from the others, then destroying said toys. They were just like cool! Mom's here. I felt like my dogs were part of their family. What else could you ask for?! Another plus is they post lots of pics online (FB) which I love. I'm sort of obsessed with their page. Such cute silly pics! Both of my dogs have used their spa several times for baths & nail trims and my girl had the best pedicure ever.
