This cemetery is in the Garden District of New Orleans and was founded in the early 1800s. It is still an active cemetery and currently houses over a thousand tombs. It's one of the unique and historical cemeteries in the area and also one of the less touristy. It's really interesting to read the tombstones and see how many individuals died so young during these centuries due to disease and allows you to really appreciate modern medicine as well as the sanitation conditions that we enjoy here in the United States. We were there about an hour before the gates close and it was rather obnoxious that the security guard started that early driving around on a golf cart and megaphoning at everyone walking about. However, I suppose it must be difficult to get people to comply with the hours. I read online that the cemetery has been closed late last year due to the poor condition of the graves and needing renovation. Hopefully they will be able to restore this beautiful piece of history and reopen it soon.

The surrounding area was a bit scary and desolate. The cementery is beautiful old history where many of the French and Spanish that founded this area are buried.

Don't be confused, there is a Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, but that is CLOSED, and is located in the Garden District (near Commander's Palace restaurant). You will need to be in a tour to enter, but I did it on the cheap. If you walk the perimeter, you can view the grounds from the iron gates built into the block walls. I stuck my phone in and took some nice photos. At the entrance, I peeked in and was able to see the Nicholas Cage pyramid crypt.

The answer, is "yes", but I feel like this place deserves my review because of how they treated one of the most difficult situations of my life. Recently, after a long illness, my mother passed away at 65. There were a lot of questions to be answered, not the least of which is what funeral home we should turn to in this trying time. For various reasons, we decided on Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home for my mother's services. Now, a lot of people might just think that a funeral home is a funeral home, and I guess to a certain extent this is true. When it comes down to something like this, you are reviewing the people who you dealt with in your time of need. Westside Leitz-Eagan is lovely. My mother's services took place in a small chapel with the greatest of care. We wanted special changes made to the Mass, and they were happy to be accommodating. Mr. Joe was the funeral director and he was so wonderful and kind. He made sure that all of our needs were met and that everything was to our liking. The priest who did my mother's Mass was Father Finn and my mother would have just loved that he was from Ireland, since she was of Irish lineage herself. After the funeral we all traveled across the river to my mother's resting place where Father Finn said a nice prayer and gave us the time we needed to say farewell. Everyone was so kind throughout the entire process and I couldn't have asked for anything more. I know that my mother would have been so happy with the way that everything was conducted. I am completely recommending Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home for your funerial needs. My experience with them was as wonderful as a situation like this can be and everyone was beyond kind and understanding.

Burials began in 1855 but the actual construction did not begin until 1856. As most of New Orleans' tombs are above ground, it is a very popular tourists' attraction, as there are often tour busses parked outside the gate. Before buying a plot here, I'd consider the hours of operation as the gates are "only" open from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM Monday through Saturday, and 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Sundays and holidays. These hours can be a little constraining if you work past 4:30 PM. Prior to my dad's passing in Spring 2025, he told us that he wanted to be buried in St. Louis Cemetery 3, as he wanted to close to Bayou St. John, as it brought back fond childhood memories going fishing there. He chose to be cremated, as will my mom one day. They chose a side by side niche for their ashes in the St. Michael the Archangel Cremation Garden, which is a fairly "new" addition to the cemetery. Mrs. Mel Byrd helped us with all the details regarding his final resting place and plaque. There are 2 or 3 mausoleums here as well as countless vaults and above ground gravesites. Even though it's a tourist attraction, most tourists are very respectful when I have been there. Often times, there are no tourists there and it can be very serene. If you are not from New Orleans, this is a good/informative tour outside of the French Quarter.

I have watched Double Jeopardy many times and wanted Doc to see the graveyards. This afternoon we visited 3 cemeteries before dinner. We could not enter, just observed from outside the gates. Remarkable how costly their immortal houses must have been. Very unique, many angels. Befitting of what we saw, Doc put Coco on the tv.

From the moment I entered, I felt comforted. The staff members were kind, sympathetic, SUPER HELPFUL & warm. I found it odd that the loss was mine, but they genuinely were empathetic towards my loss. The owner, Ms. Dennis, gave the same feelings and I truly understand why the staff had the compassion they did; it was because SHE DID!!!! Her heart is wide and vast. She's friendly, knowledgeable, kind, helpful, gentle as a lamb, able to work with anyone... By far this was the most warming experience of this nature I've ever had. WHEN you have to bury a loved one, I recommend this facility & Ms. Dennis; she is excellent in all that she does. God bless her for all that she does. Street parking and off street parking.

I have to say my pics weren't as good this visit. Maybe the rain grey day was the issue. I was glad to see the confederate statues were spared as I think trying to erase our past send the wrong message. Learn from your mistake or you will repeat them. plus, the statues are a landmark to finding the cemeteries most popular area .. the weeping angel. The angel is beautiful and not out in the open. It's in a large mausoleum with huge columns in the front and blue stained glass in the back.
