One of my indoor exercise location.

Not sure why when a place is located in a predomimately Black neighborhood, it has to be in the "hood." As if that' s a bad connotation of this place or area. I have been coming here for years. I like the fact it's one of the few recreational center where I can lift weights, play basketball, swim, and run on a track (track is outdoor). Yes, it is city owned and operated. You will not get the fluff that all the private gyms have just to drive up prices. If you are a true exerciser, you don't need the fluff. You want the equipment that is needed to meet your exercise goals. St. John Rec has been that for me since 1995 when I moved to Brooklyn. So, if you are looking for an affordable gym to get your body in shape then you may want to check out St. John Recreational Center.

Smith machine, Power rack

I recently visited St. John's Recreation Center and it was better than what I expected for a NYC recreation center. It has a nice sized swimming pool, basketball court, large locker room with spacious lockers and plenty of exercise equipment. The weight training room was in great shape. They had a good variety of machines and equipment including a "power rack" and hexbar. Most of the dumbbells looked fairly new. The cardio room was very clean and all of the machines were functioning. If you are looking for a decent affordable place to exercise especially if you are into weight training and want to use a power rack and or a hexbar then this is one of the locations I recommend.

Great place to play handball in the summer time. Especially at night they have lights on til pretty late. It's great for any community to have a place to meet and enjoy the weather make friends and play some ball ( basketball, baseball and handball) this review is purely for the outdoors portion.

Ask the Community - St. John's Recreation Center

Would I have to pay to play basketball in the gym?

Yes. Unless you're under 18, you need a membership. More info here: https://www.nycgovparks.org/programs/recreation-centers/membership

If your under the age of 18 can you just walk in with just a id?

Membership is free if you're under 18, but you will still have to get a membership card. More info here: https://www.nycgovparks.org/programs/recreation-centers/membership

Where to donate 8 ft regulation pool table?

The recreation center already has a pool table, but I would give them a call and ask. It is possible they have a use for a second one, or maybe they know of another recreation center that needs one.…

Do you need to sign up to go here? our you just come because my son whats to go here to play basketball

Pretty sure you need a NYC Parks & Recreation membership, which you can get there. The membership gives you access to all recreation centers in NYC.

Like most of you who will be reading this review, I was looking for a place close to NYC to camp…read moreovernight with a few friends, but didn't want to spend too much time traveling out of the NYC area. This was one of my friend's first time camping, and as such, we choose Gateway National Park (Floyd Bennett Field). Here is some information that we wish we had known before booking. Overall, it was good to get out of the city, but there are some downsides as described below. 1) Get some good bug spay cause there are lots of mosquitoes. A couple of trails were actually closed due to the mosquitoes in the area. However, once we lathered ourselves with insect repellent with 99.9% Deet, the bugs didn't mess with us too much. 2) The raccoons come out at night. We were informed that there was a raccoon problem, and that you should put all of your food before dark. The person was right. Make sure you bring something to store the food in (cooler or other locking container) and you will not have any problems. 3) The campsites are pretty much in an open field. Sites T14 and T15 have some privacy, but the rest are open for everyone to see. Also, the grey on the campsite map is a real depiction of the paved areas. The areas surrounding the campsites are old paved runways, so expect cars and motorcycles driving around the area. 4) Noise...what noise? Having previously participated in a couple of 5Ks at Floyd Bennett Field, I knew that there could be some activities there during the day. However, we were truly surprised at the incessant woman on the loudspeaker screaming "3..2..1..GOOO!", the guy practicing landing a helicopter from 2:00 - 8:00 PM, the jets flying over to land at JFK until 11:00 PM (not too bad, because the noise was mostly subdued by the woman on the loud speaker), and the jets taking off starting at 6:00 AM (this was a LOUD wake up call). 5) There are flushable and clean bathrooms by the camp store that are open from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM. Also, you can purchase firewood at the camp store. The staff there are very friendly and can also provide tips on local food and entertainment.

Unless you want to stop at the shops and restaurants at the end, then I would do the opposite. For me, this direction is perfect because I can end near Penn Station and hop back on the LIRR home. But regardless of which direction you walk, it's perfection. I made a few pit stops along the way this time. I hopped off to explore Little Island, realized the Whitney Museum was right there, and decided to explore that too. Then I went back to the High Line and continued my walk, ending at The Vessel; another one of my favorites. I love the greenery, the flowers, the art,the Hudson River views, and the fact that there is always something to see along the way. Grab an ice cream as a little treat on a sunny day, and you have the perfect NYC outing. The High Line will definitely always be one of my favorite things to do in the city.

If you're between the ages of 18-24, you pay only $25/year which is a great deal. I paid $75 for 6 months, and that gives me access to both this Rec Center and the Aquatic Center in Flushing Meadows Park, as well as, any affiliated Rec Center in the 5 boroughs. Plenty of parking available on the street, or you have the option of parking in their lot but there's limited spaces there. And underneath the highway, there's parking available there as well. Inside, once you scan in at the front desk, there's 3 rooms: cardio, free weights and multi-purpose machines. Down the center hall, there's 2 well maintained racquetball courts, and past that is a children's play room and the main gymnasium for basketball and ping pong, as well as, an indoor track. Their racquetball courts cost $7/hour, and the price includes a ball and racket. However, they don't accept cash strangely enough, only credit/debit and check. All 3 rooms are have pretty much the same dimensions..and I pretty much feel the same way about all of them: too small, during busy hours you feel really congested in there. A few of the machines in the multi-purpose room were out-of-order. Treadmills and elliptical machines are not well spaced out. Plus there's no air circulation of any kind making the air in the room really dense. Legit almost feels like a sauna in all 3 rooms. Locker rooms and rest rooms seem well maintained and are relatively clean. There's plenty of decent sized lockers available. Overall, an OKAY Rec Center that can definitely use some improvements!
