Stopped at the bar for a few drinks and too start my night off. Friendly service. I had no reservations but there was nobody at the bar so it was fine. Friendly servers. The cocktails I got were kind of a snooze. I think the sailor thyme would work better in a coupe glass than a martini. Tasted a bit light. Was not impressed with the new fashioned. Kind of run of the mill. Didn't taste the burnt orange and the drink looked like it could use some care. Maybe upgrade to a big ice cube. Oysters were ok. Would have been nice to have horseradish as an option. Oyster crackers would have been good. I felt at $21 it was overpriced without those additions. I'd give it another shot sometime and try some entrees. read more

St. John's Fish Exchange - 6 oysters. Kind of a messy presentation. At this price point an oyster fork would be good. - Seafood Near Me - St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

The service was excellent but the food was not! I've been to the Fish Exchange many times and sadly the quality of the food is terrible. The only person at our table of 9 who enjoyed their meal was the guy who had Mac and cheese! Huge disappointment and my last visit there. read more

My mom and I can her for lunch one weekday during the Christmas break, and it was at a relatively quiet hour, and we were seated in a nice spot. The inside of this restaurant is beautiful; super great view, modern furniture, comfy seating, etc. Our food was served at a good time, but some items were a bit lukewarm. My mom ended up asking for a new batch of fries, while I just kept my lukewarm items. I ordered the Panko Crusted Cod ($30), which was one of my first times ordering a main portion of fish at a restaurant. There was a good variety of meals (and prices) to choose from, I just decided to get a pricier dish. The cod was topped with a nice tomato based sauce that mixed well with the root vegetables and rice I ordered as the side. The Panko breadcrumbs mixed well with the cod too. Like I said, the sides were pretty lukewarm (rice and vegetables) though. Overall, I had a good experience ordering a relatively pricey dish. The tomato Panko mix worked well with the cod. However, I'd recommend having sides heated up a bit more before bringing them out since both my mom and I's sides were getting cold. read more

Service and atmosphere is excellent, but sadly the food quality used to be much better. No longer my go to when in St. John's:(

Super friendly servers, food came quickly and was delicious. We had specialty cocktails, full lobster dinner and apple crumble cheesecake. Atmosphere was great!! read more

My wife wanted Lobster. And did they ever deliver. Well done! My pasta was absolutely excellent. The cocktail menu was superb. I could have dined on the cocktails alone!! The server was a perfect blend of professional and friendly. Came by just often enough to make sure we had everything we needed. When back in St. John's we will return. A restaurant like this makes a trip to St. John's memorable. (they're busy - make a reservation) read more

The food was great, so was the service Reservations are a must. I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. I had the Panko cod. It came with vegetables and greens. The vegetables were beets (great choice) and the greens were like a cooked kale. They were also great. Not the usual, but great choices. The fries were a little soft but tasty. Still worthwhile Service was reasonably fast at the bar (I had no reservation and I was alone) Really busy place. The entrance from Water street is at the restaurant level but from the parkade at the lower street, the entrance access is a little convoluted I would go again read more

Lovely restaurant, delicious food, and excellent staff. We had the lobster roll, steak frites, and a burger. Everything was perfect, fresh, and just as we expected. Not sure about any of the other months, but definitely make sure you have a reservation in July. read more

I can not say enough good about this restaurant....the evening had been a bit of a SNAFU for various reasons. The staff were so understanding and helpful. The lobster mac and cheese was amazing, as was my drink and my husband's sticky pudding. read more

We had a fantastic meal here. There were five of us and no reservation so we ended up sitting at the bar which was fine. The food was fantastic. Absolutely fantastic! Our party had a mix, one had the fish and chips (and she is from Prince Rupert where they have lots of fish and chips) and thought it was great, two had the halibut special, also fantastic (note the fries were really good) and two of us had the pasta with lobster which was absolutely out of this world. Our pasta was $32.00 but with the big hunks of fresh lobster, it was well worth it. We all enjoyed it so much, that we want to try to go again before we leave. Would highly recommend. read more

I had a lunch here, sitting right next to a full length window that oversaw the St John's Harbour, The Battery and a distant view of the Signal Hill. I loved the view. IMO, this view, plus interior decor, should worth 50% of the price tag. This means I won't complain about the value no matter how average the food is. And the cod entree (lunch special $18) and the apple tart dessert (regular menu $7) I had were indeed meh. The cod and vegetables were overcooked. They were both bland. Both shortcomings were rescued by the ingredients themselves, as in they were super fresh. The soup of the day was the best part of the entree. The apple tart was farmers market bought, plus 3 teaspoons of vanilla ice cream. The service was good, friendly and professional. My server Cassandra gave good recommendations. If you can sit next to the view, the overall rating is 3 stars. If you cannot sit next to the view, the rating was 2 stars for food, plus 0.5 star for the service. read more

Heard a lot about the fish exchange , the place is beautiful, nice view, nice bar ! Excellent service! I heard they had lunch specials but didn't see any . Regular menu only, we order the mussels which where amazing!! The serving was perfect and the sauce was soooo good! But I suggest they serve it with bread ( I order some bread) I also had the French country salad (side) it was also good. The Montreal smoked meat sandwich was just ok. Nothing special ....Basically a Ruben sandwich without the sauerkraut and dressing. Prices in my opinion a little high for what it was and as people around me order regular entrees they seem to be on a smaller size servings . Glad I had the mussels I eat a lot! I think it is a place to try, but I love mussels and the area seems fill with places where they serve them at better price . Also I was surprise that for the name of the restaurant it didn't have a lot of fish options . I do recommend the place it is good , and I imagine at night may have a busier fun atmosphere. read more

Excellent dinner and great service. Very fresh seafood and great wine. Highly recommend reservations.

Best of the best in St Johns. Don't make the trip and skip this. Great food atmosphere and service with reasonable prices for all you get.

Highly recommended. The cod dish was excellent and we had great service from Gavin, who also was pretty informed on selecting a scotch. Try Laphroaig scotch for something out of the ordinary. We'll go again on this trip. No crowd at lunch time. read more

Overall decent food but nothing special. Truly awful service. Waited more than 20 mins for a table that we had a reservation on the books for more than six weeks with a self-directed confirmation call. Finally get seated and the table is not set remotely properly. Another 30 mins come and go and our drink order finally goes in (now nearly an hour behind). Drinks, apps and food arrive. Most people (party of 15) enjoyed but all agreed it wasn't particularly special. Mains are wrapping and the server asks how we want the bills done while half are still eating and no offer of coffee tea or dessert. Also the fact that the restaurant bathrooms are in the main lobby and are used by the general public kills the experience and is arguable a risk to the security of patrons. It's no cheaper than any other spot on Water Street, take your money elsewhere. read more

I've been to SJFX numerous times and I have raved about it each time. Their brunch Buffett is delicious- they have lots of vegetarian options, too. The eggs benny station and the waffle station are amazing. Their dessert table is so delicious too. It is reasonably priced at $30 per person- they have a lot of choices and good quality food as well. I could just do the eggs benny and amazing waffles every time. Apparently, their new menu has eggs benny and waffles every Sunday for $20 a person (one trip to each station)- this is more than enough food. I went there for supper service once and I got the Lobster Mac & Cheese. It was amazing and did not disappoint. Highly recommend! read more

Great social atmosphere and fresh seafood. This is my second here this week - the first time was around 730pm and the place was packed. This seems to be St John's new social scene for food as it was bustling with happy people. This time, I arrived at 4:30pm and they gave me a great spot with an amazing view of the harbour. Even at 4pm, this place was still busy! Ambience 5/5 - right by the waterfront with amazing views. The decor is casual modern and there's a lot of social energy at this place. Service 3/5 - depending on how busy they are, service can be mediocre to absent. The staff is young and friendly - just make sure you get everything you need cuz you may not see them for a while. Food 4/5 - traditional nfld seafood dishes and fresh fish. Well prepared. The portions are smaller than other comparable places but delicious. Overall, well worth a visit! read more

This is a beautiful restaurant and a cool bar! The food was average and did not blow us away. My husband and I both started with the lobster bisque. The broth was rich and creamy, but there wasn't many pieces of lobster in it. We split the captain's seafood feast. All of the fish were seasoned well and it was a nice variety. The portions were very small. I added a French country side salad, which was delicious. I loved the earthiness of the goat cheese and beets with the grilled asparagus. Great service, but nothing special about the food. We wish it was more seafood focused and better food for the price. read more

If you full order of a side, you'll have to order double just to get a full bowl. Fish was undercooked so the meal was compensated as I don't waste meat. Came with breadcrumbs that just took up space on the plate. Service was good; bathrooms were a mess. A let down for a restaurant I was looking forward to enjoying. Chefs smoking at the exit, and the narrow walkway ensure you have to inhale the smoke. Dropped my rating from a ** to a *. read more

We went here for lunch on our first day in St. John's based on a recommendation from the concierge at our hotel. It was a late lunch on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We got the best seat in the house looking into the harbour. The wait staff was very excited to seat us. We all ordered the fish and chips. ($16.95) The portions were generous and the fries were twice cooked. They were served promptly. Our waitress was very friendly. The bill came with homemade peppermint knobs. Very charming. read more

Very bad service , we waited for the bar and waiters let other customer go before us . Waiter did not verify the fact and try to cover mistake . It's good but a bit pricey! It cost me $52 without tip for a seafood pasta and a bloody Caesar (aka FX CZAR). I was pronouncing it "zar" but it's actually "C-zar"... get it?! Lol This Caesar was tasty and had a shrimp and beef jerky on top. The salt rim was fresh bacon jalapeno rim...mmm, but don't worry it wasn't very spicy. For food I had the lobster shrimp pappardelle. There was quite a bit of shrimp and the lobster peices were pretty generous. I actually preferred the taste of the shrimp over the lobster. One small piece of the lobster was a bit tougher than I would have liked but not overly tough. I don't usually order pasta at a resto because I don't like to carb up but damn it was worth it! The sauce was a creamy lobster butter sauce. Mmm. The pasta had a bit of cooked tomatoes . the pappardelle was cooked to perfection. The menu said there was asparagus in the dish but honestly I didn't see any and I'm OK with that. I was pretty full after my meal. If you like lobster pasta and you are in Montreal definitely get reservations for Joe Beef. You won't be disappointed. ;) The decor is nice and the place is pretty spacious. It also has a great view of the harbour! It's a great place to go with your significant other. Reserve a booth and get a bottle of wine and admire the view. ;) read more

This is very good seafood restaurant with a comfortable and elegant ambience. We were here last month for a large dinner party. We had a set menu and this included highlights from their regular menu. I had the seafood chowder, artisan greens, steamed lobster and flourless chocolate cake. Chowder came piping hot and was creamy with lots of clams, mussels, and fish. They had some issue with getting the large number of lobsters out for our table but mine eventually came. The lobster was piping hot steamed with drawn butter and was delicious. My colleague got a lobster 3 x the normal size! Dessert was a satisfying chocolate cake. Other people in my party tried the lobster and shrimp paparadelle and that was amazing. Fresh pasta prepared well. The restaurant was very busy on a Saturday night there were people lining outside the door. The washrooms were a little out of the way. Cocktails were acceptable but depends if you're picky. Overall great experience and a must try if you're in the St. John area. read more

We went here for some late night snacks and cocktails towards the end of our trip. The cocktails were unique and excellently crafted and the decor was very nice and upscale. They offer a great view of the harbor with an extensive wine list. This is the only place where we had cod tongue and honestly I don't know is why they serve it anywhere. I eat a ton of odd textured foods and the best words I can use to describe cod tongue are "nasty AF". read more

The day we went I called in the afternoon and got a reservation for 8pm. When we arrived we were immediately taken to our table by the doors overlooking the harbour. So lovely! Incredibly fresh fish! My mother had the little bit of everything dinner, it's not actually called that but it's what it looks like. They had not got halibut in that night but swapped it with trout. I had the Lobster Mac. All so flavourful and fresh! We also LOVED their house made blueberry cheesecake. Seriously, the best cheesecake I've had in a while. Worth the hype. read more

We loved this place. We had an overnight in St John's before flying back to NYC. Did a quick google and everywhere seemed to be shut on a Sunday. Not St John's Fish Exchange! We were seated upstairs with an amazing view of the harbour. I had fab fish and chips and delish NZ Sauv B. My husband had halibut which he said was 'very nice' - he's not the most effusive man. The atmosphere was perfect - buzzy and alive but not too noisy. Our server was great, helpful, friendly and there when we needed him. read more

This is a new restaurant so we thought we'd try it. It's very modern chic with a small but lovely outdoor patio. We chose to sit inside overlooking the harbour. The service was friendly but once it got busy , timing was very slow. I agree with another Yelper when they said, make sure you order everything you want because you don't know when they'll be back. My mussels were deeeelicious. But my husband ventured to the wild side and tried the cod tongues and scrunchions and that was not a winner. The scrunchions are extremely salty. Location 5 of 5, decor 5-5, service 4-5, food 4-5, overall experience 3-5. Maybe it was just too big for me and didn't feel cozy at all. Oh ya, make sure to make reservations if you plan to go in after 5:00. read more

Fish exchange has a great atmosphere and view. There was a great selection of drinks and the decor of the bar was unique and modern. Not a huge selection for drinks but there was something to satisfy everyone's palate (everyone to the cocktail sipper to the craft beer drinker). The highlight was definitely the food and the daily selection of fishes. If you don't want to splurge there's plenty of meals for around 15 dollars that also taste great including the burger, fish and chips and tacos. I can't wait to go back and try more of the fish entrees. Service was relatively quick and all the staff were friendly. There were a few mistakes regarding tables and orders but that's to be expected with just opening. read more
