Friday June 24 - Planned and attended a private event Harbour Room (100 guests)…read more Pros - Some of the most amazing views of the Vancouver waterfront!!! - Outdoor patio seats 30, they have patio umbrellas if needed - Well known venue, you'll likely come here for a wedding or special event - Professional staff such as an events coordinator, catering and bartending no complaints - We ordered 6 hors d'oeuvres that were passed throughout the event, our guests loved the items! They are made on-site as far as I know. - Full bar with domestic and import beers, spirits including scotches and 6 beers on tap. Cons - A little bit stuffy in some way with metal plaques on the walls from old events, this place really has 125 years of history - A private member's club, so you won't be able to just walk into the venue to enjoy the view - There is one pulldown screen on stage and the projector was decent but could be a bit better - Audio was also not as loud as it needed to be and it was already on max - They had wired mics, no wireless Damage -A few thousand dollars. Protip - No free parking that I know of, only hourly and daily rates.

The staff were all incredible to work with, so easy going and approachable while organized and thorough. Our coordinator, Nicole, was full of great suggestions and responded to every one of our last-minute, frantic emails with grace and helpfulness. The bar manager, JJ, gave us everything we needed during setup the day of, and provided all logistical support with our dj, florist, and guests with a smile. Bar staff were full of laughs, good humour, and friendly. The venue is wildly charming, the main hall has a wrap around licensed deck that looks over Coal Harbour providing stunning views day and night. Our guests from the prairie provinces were in awe all night. Emelle's catering, exclusive caterer, provided food and service for the wedding and we couldn't have been happier. Food was 5 star, and service was friendly, efficient, and unobtrusive. Venue and alcohol service costs are very affordable, especially in comparison to other local venues. Can't wait to have another event there!

I really like this. Came here for the annual 12X12 exhibit. This is a photgraphy competition, friendly of course, but there are catches., with a new catch for this year's 2012 competition. http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/salt-building-vancouver?select=L_6w9BcDkIY4mFJkwd59SQ#Tauo1LC-G8fbqfxbek4lVA Each competitor must: 1. Take 1 photograph of a theme announced once, every hour on the hour 2. Intepret the announced theme in a single shot 3. 12 shots in total meaning you're on the hunt to interpret a theme each hour for 12 hours. 4. The photograph is on film. Not digital. 5. This year's catch is.... black and white film only. I've come out to this exhibit every year since it's inception. They had it at another venue in previous years, but it was horribly crowded and stuffy. This was a welcomed change, much welcomed. Maybe next year I'll do it. I'll have to dust off one of my film cameras.

What an entirely grand and beautifully restored heritage building. Seeing, and more importantly,…read morebeing able to enjoy spaces like this are rare, especially in cities like ours where there seems to be an overwhelming need to make everything shiny and new. (yes there are foundations in place to protect our heritage buildings, but I'm making sweeping generalizations here) When the Salt Building was first being revitalized during the pre-Olympic building-frenzy era, there was talk of the space being used as a pub or high-end restaurant or some other variation on that theme. Though it may have been entirely acceptable -- and maybe even great -- if that were the case today (and who knows, it may very well be the case in the future), but it almost seems as though that would be a bastardization of this minimal bare-bones structure. The building is gorgeous. Bookended with mammoth-sized windows, allowing plenty of light to pour in throughout the almost 14,000sq foot space, exposing the elaborate timber trusses and metal hardware, and shining of the polished concrete floor, there is not one thing I'd change here. It would be a shame to cover any of it up. A perfect event location, an ideal gathering space, an overwhelmingly stunning surprise in an area that is known for making everything "pretty," the Salt Building is, at this moment, a perfect homage to its historic past.

Charged almost $1k CAD for 2 nights and parking for this, and that was really disappointing. When we checked out, the clerk asked how our stay was and I responded, "Horrendous for the price." She stared at the floor, didn't ask any questions and didn't offer anything to make up for it so I told her what the main issues were. Still no response. Clicked on "book now" several times on their website to book a room and it wouldn't work, so had to call to make a reservation which I haven't done in decades. That should have been my first sign. My friend was adamant that we stay here due to the location. This is an old hotel. It has some charm. The location is excellent, being close to Stanley Park and across from the beach. It was originally built as an apartment building in 1913. The elevators are small and rickety. You can see where they have remodeled, cracks and such in the walls show age/wear. Even though we got the windows open, the little ceiling fan on the high ceiling and the portable fan from the 80's did not help at all with the heat. The room we were in had 2 queen beds and faced a street, but we could see the beach from the room. I had to throw a bucket of ice water on the bed both nights in order to sleep, it was so hot. Even then, since the portable fan turned itself off, I was fried. My friend was irritated about there only being one room key and the old fashioned kind at that. It was because she had planned on going on walks at the crack of dawn which I wasn't going to do and meeting others while I was elsewhere. When she asked the front desk why only one key, they told her that they have 2 keys total so if one is lost, they have a back-up, but that is it. There are no locksmiths in Vancouver, huh? I tried to watch the parade going on in Seattle while my friend was out with the key, but the ancient TV had a giant black border around the picture so it was about a 15" picture. The small bathroom didn't have enough counter space for 2 people's stuff, so mine stayed in my suitcase. No end tables for the beds except a small one between them. There was a round table and chairs which was used as a makeshift desk. The food at the restaurant was good. It is a good location for a bite to eat.

The foyer to the building isn't very telling or chic, but there is a grand piano stationed when you get off of the elevator, if you're into that kind of thing. Event planners and brides with the chops to transform rooms would probably enjoy their project. The jem of the Jewel is the patio, in my humble opinion anyway, especially with the downtown view it bestows on it's guests. Or, if you're into elegance that's just about retro, the room, as is, might be just your style. Bar staff are pleasant, their cash bar accepts credit cards and they have the usual suspects when it comes to beer and wine, just don't expect anything fancier than Granville Island or Sumac Ridge.
