St. Dominic's Cemetery is yet another ghostly part of Benicia, not just its Ghost Fleet or the haunting hills of Lake Herman. St. Dominic's is the final resting place of California's first nun, Concepcion Arguello- https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-grave-of-concepcion-arguello-benicia-california She was born when Alta California was part of the Spanish Empire, and passed away in quiet Benicia once California was an American state. Some say that as a nun, she pined for her older Russian lover, Nikolai Rezanov, as he perished in the Siberian steppe.
For the most part, St. Dominic's is well-maintained, with beautiful new statues of Saints Dominic and Francis of Assisi. The roads are paved, the grass is mowed, tho Concepcion's gravestone has faded over time, forsaken, forlorn, forgotten. One can take a stroll, or drive it, it's safe and in a residential neighborhood not far from the Arsenal.
St. Dominic's has beautiful views spanning the Carquinez Strait and the Central Valley, a crossroads of sorts. Like a lot of Benicia, it feels otherworldly. read more
