The most exciting time for our family. Our daughter's wedding! We stayed at the St. Croix Inn along with about 60+ other friends and family as this is the closest hotel to The Atrium, a beautiful wedding venue 5 minutes away. This place has potential. Our Lakeside Suite was updated and fairly clean. We had a few issues with a broken toilet seat, broken blind in the main living space and ants. Lots of ants. The staff did fix the toilet seat and blind in a timely manner. They tried to spray for the ants, but it didn't work. We, the guests, found an ant repellent and took care of the ants ourselves. Our family and friends had mixed reviews about their rooms. Some said they were fine and some said pretty out dated, unclean, issues with toilets and showers not draining. The cabins that our family and friends rented were not very clean in their opinion. We are NOT high maintenance people! We camp for crying out loud. We can rough it. So if our family and friends are complaining - it must have been pretty bad. Now, the staff. . . First off, the maintenance/custodian Fredrico was wonderful! He did not speak English, but used the translation app on his phone to communicate with us. There was a concern about the deck steps that lead to the restaurant and down to the back yard. They were unsafe. He took care of it right away and told me how he understood that our daughter's wedding was that weekend and that the rehearsal and welcome party were going to be there in the yard by the lake. He reassured me that everything would be safe. One of the housekeeping ladies also was wonderful! I'm not sure if it was his wife or not, but they were so welcoming, accommodating and gracious. Constantly reassuring us that they had our backs and understood how important this weekend was for us. Miss Becky needs some training from them! MISS BECKY: The general manager. WOW! Never in my life have I experienced hospitality like that from a GM! Honestly, we felt like we were at a 'crazy Aunt's' house where you didn't know what you were going to get! A bit bi-bolarish! We talked to her with respect and kindness and she was fine. If any of our guests had concerns, she was darn right mean! She promises things, but doesn't always deliver. We were happy that at least the broken toilet seat and blind were repaired, but I'm sure she's under scrutiny by management. If she's not on an improvement plan - she NEEDS to be! Becky promised the bride and groom that the bar/restaurant would be open AFTER the wedding. The wedding ended at 11:00 with guests arriving back via shuttle starting at 10:15 p.m. My sister arrived back on the first shuttle. She said that Becky was kicking other patrons out of the bar. Saying, we have to close now. Those other guests (not from our party) were not happy! When the rest of the wedding guests got back on their shuttles, the bar was closed. This is like `10:30 and 10:45p.m. When they called the emergency number on the front desk, Becky answered and said, "There weren't any people in the bar and when that happens, we have to close it." Which was a lie as we knew she kicked those other guests out to avoid waiting on the wedding party. She then proceeded to say, "There's a bar down the road you can go to." So. . . . we paid for a shuttle for our guests to NOT drink and drive at ALL and she wants them to drive down the road to a bar? This was so frustrating for us as parents of the bride. We take pride in keeping everyone safe and NOT breaking the law! The father of the bride is a retired police officer and this infuriated all of us! So the young adults pooled their beverages and snacks from their room and partied on the lawn till Lord knows how long! They made the best of it! ERIC: Eric explained to us that he is new to the St. Croix Inn. Telling us that he was 'begged' my management to come up to Wisconsin. I believe he said he came from Florida. He also kept saying, I am the Assistant GM. He seemed more the GM than Becky. He had great customer service and was very helpful and accommodating. I'm hoping that he's there to straighten things out, get trained from Becky and then replace her! That would be a great business plan. Eric had his hands tied, it was evident, but he did make sure all of the guests double room charges (yes this happened to ALL of us too!) were taken care of. Eric - I wish you well and I hope they are paying you well to put up with all of this! So - if you are having a wedding in Solon Springs, stay at airbnb's. Stay at the cabins at Swanson's Motel Cabins, or stay up in Superior/Duluth. It's not worth the hassle to stay at the St. Croix Inn. As the parents of the bride, this was very embarrassing for us. People traveled 5-6 hours (some out of state) and then didn't have a decent place to lie their head. While I know this is not a reflection on us, I was still very embarrassed. I stayed once last December for one night and for three nights this December. Both times I brought my dog. It's very convenient to be able to have a hotel that accepts dogs and last year I reserved a pet room with no view. It had two queen beds. This year I reserved a pet room with a view but when we checked in we found it had two full size beds instead of queen. Not great for two adults! There was no point in speaking to the front desk as she was clearly in a bad mood when we arrived. Be sure to reserve the one with no view if you are adults with a dog. That room was also newer than the one with the view. The woman who checked us in was the only employee we saw all three days. She was pretty gruff in the bar and told my sister (who was staying in a room upstairs) they don't put out dry cereal during the week days. Seriously?? The breakfast is already pretty bare bones so that seemed especially chintzy. There aren't a lot of options in Solon so at least know what you're in for if you stay here. read more

We were just there. The pool & hot tub area are filthy! Black mold on the floors by the swimming pool, on the walls, on the ceiling. There's water dripping from the ceiling. You can barely breathe in there because of all the humidity. The pool is very cloudy and cannot see the bottom because it is so dirty. We were very disappointed since we were looking forward to spending some time in the pool and hot tub. Don't plan on breakfast. Very little of anything. Went to get coffee around 8:30am & both pots were empty! Our room was pretty nice. The best part is the lake view. read more

Super cozy inn on the lake, with a view from the room's balcony. The decor was classic northwoods charming, and the staff were friendly and helpful. There was a small tavern with good beer on tap and bar food right down the hall from the room, and a balcony overlooking the lake at the bar. The bed wasn't the most comfortable, but I would stay there any time I'm in the area anyway. The sounds, scenery and lake time vibe are good for the soul. read more

We booked a room just to have a stopover bed en route to Bayfield- so didn't need much. We found the place a bit disconcerting from the start. The parking lot and pull thru/drop off area was confusing and disorganized. I ended up saying 'I guess this is a spot' and parking, which appeared to be what everyone had done as well. Check in was easy enough and straightforward, our host was polite. We were roomed in #101, 12 feet from the front desk and it's ringing phone and bustle, and on the other side of a wall from the bar. We were shocked that this space would actually be used for guests. When the door is open there is literally no privacy - something one typically doesn't need to be concerned about when a room is in a hallway. The room was fine, clean linens and very comfortable king sized bed. It's an old building so a couple things were attributable to that... musty smells drifted through at times - possibly from the chair I sat in - and the floors were extremely creeky. Age makes that understandable but that doesn't really help at 12:30am or 6:15am when our upstairs neighbors decided to do a kickboxing class or an 'indoor marathon' like everyone is doing these days. Between the bar and the neighbors/floors it wasn't a quiet or pleasant stay and this will prevent us from returning. We did wake to a very nice view of the lake which was the main strength and (I assume) the reason for the steep room rate. The view definitely didn't make up for the more troubling factors. My wife and I talked about how this hotel COULD be converted into a very nice lake front hotel. Not necessarily a she she boutique type place, but a low key place that uses its location and age as charm... making it a place that takes itself & it's guests seriously and not a place that relies solely on a great view to justify its existence. read more

Perfect Northern Wisconsin Retreat! After reading recent reviews I was really nervous but this place was perfect for our family. Is it the Ritz, nope but it was clean and the service and amenities were wonderful! It has an old cabin feel with rentable pontoon boats, the kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards are all free to use. The sheets were super soft and the breakfast was free (you get what you pay for kind of free, so it wasn't amazing but you could find something). The restaurant has a limited menu but all very inexpensive and good. The view was amazing, I highly recommend a lake view. read more

Not a bad hotel. Clean beds which is the most important. Continental breakfast. Nice deck for sipping your coffee on. Beautiful view of the lake. I will say, not worth the $150 for a double room. If you think you are getting queen beds, guess again. Doubles! For four large adults. Their website and check in boasts of updated rooms, ours most certainly was not updated. We made our reservation with a cot. When we checked in their said they didn't have any, that they were all spoken for. When my dad went down to get extra blankets for somebody to crash on the floor, a cot magically was available. Turns out they just didn't want to bring it up the steps. read more

It's not fancy, it's not modern. Smells a little funky. Hit or miss on cleanliness. Staff is always, always pleasant but not overly ambitious. -- Early bird gets the worm when it comes to breakfast, b/c when its gone its gone!!!!We stay here a lot because the view is lovely and it's near our favorite fishing spots. Kids enjoy the pool and hot tub and parents enjoy being able to see them from the bar! ;) overall an ok place if you don't need fancy. read more

My husband and I stayed at the St. Croix Inn when we went to Duluth for our honeymoon weekend. We found the hotel on Priceline.com and got a great rate on the hotel for the weekend. We drove to Duluth and spent the day there before checking in late (after calling and letting the hotel staff know we would be checking in late), and basically got there, unpacked a few things, and went to bed. Our room was on the lake side and the sunrise on the lake was GORGEOUS, the room was clean and quiet, and the staff helpful. We went to the pool/hot tub area the second night we stayed there. The only thing I would have changed about our stay was that there were several high school-aged kids in the pool and hot tub area, and we were pretty sure they weren't all staying at the hotel, but were friends of someone who must have worked at the hotel. That being said, we were really looking for a clean, comfortable place to sleep, and this hotel was perfect. They also had a great continental breakfast with muffins, bagels, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, milk and juice. I was very happy with our decision to stay at this hotel and we would definitely stay here again! The wallpaper and colors in the room are a little bit dated, but our room had a great view and a refrigerator and lots of space! read more
