On our stop to Spain's largest island of Palma de Mallorca, the Norwegian Cruise Line literature stated Mallorca was the unique home to the ensaimada pastry, which was found only on this island. So we knew we wanted to try this while here. We encountered this St. Cristo bakery shop in a shopping mall, and sure enough there were the ensaimadas amongst their various products - and perfect for an afternoon snack with a cafe Americano. It's basically a cream filled brioche-like pastry, and it was large and delectable, and goes for 2.3 euros. I'm not sure what was so unique about it though, as it seems many cultures have this type of pastry, but admittedly I could not recall having ever seen it in say Barcelona or Valencia on my past visits (but I wasn't really looking either). Anyway, a fun little stop on this island, and just the sort of touristy thing we like doing to get a taste of local culture and cuisine. read more
