We had hoped to find the best ensaimadas here, as the shops are apparently quite famous. The baked goods were good, don't get me wrong, but there are better options in town. Especially the plain ensaimada was a bit disappointing. On the other hand, the fully-loaded version with caramel cream and baked coconut was delicious, though that topping would have also been great on just about anything else. Some of our coffees were great, some tasted a bit odd. The employees were very nice and explained the different offerings. Have an ensaimada here to have a good baseline, then try other shops.

Since both of us were vegetarian, we opted for two vegetarian pastries they had to offer with a coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice. The island has oranges in abundance, so every nook of the street holds little shop that serves freshly squeezed orange juice. The taste is so much better than the bottled juice we get in USA. The bakery was super busy, and all the seating in the front was taken. However, there was a glass door at the back that leads to a quite tranquil area, decorated with trees, art and personal touches from the owner on each table. The space was relaxing where you can enjoy the meal and the company away from the hustle bustle of the crowd.

The restaurant itself is nice and cozy, it looked like an old style diner since they didn't only serve pastries, but actual food, but I didn't try any of their meals during my visit, just their sweets. The first thing I bought was the chocolate ensaimada. I just went for chocolate, cuz I wanted to stick with what I liked. The servers weren't too open to giving out recommendations, so I had to chose based on what looked good. The ensaimada was super sweet. It was covered in powdered sugar and when I dug in, it looked like I was back in college, partying really hard, since my mouth and nose was covered in that fine white powder. The chocolate was crusted all over the spiraling interior of the pastry and it was just a total sugar rush for me for the rest of the day. During my second visit, I got their turon ensaimada which looked a little different since it wasn't in the same spiraled pastry format, it looked more like a sweet calzone with almond filling. This time I knew to shake the pastry over a trashcan to make it rain that sweet white angel dust, but again, the pastry was still super sweet. Though the turon filling did give it a nice balance, I still liked the chocolate ensaimada more. If you do decide to visit and try something from here, be ready for the sugar rush! Unless of course, you buy something savory.
