horrendous is the word that comes to mind to describe this place . we walked in to the carpeted rooms (pet friendly and carpet??) poop stains in the elevator, bugs on the bed which when we told him after five mins this wasn't gonna work he sai take it up with your bank he said those are just bugs not bed bugs. This property is grossly mis-advertised ("Historic" is a euphemism for "RUN DOWN") and I am upset that a refund could not be issued. We arrived and there were people passed out on the steps of the hotel. We could not safely park our van there overnight. Essentially, it looks like a flop house. read more

Despite the wild negative reviews this place has received (rude/racist staff, exposed wires, broken cooling/heating units, unsafe location, etc.) my friend and I booked a room here because it was the only room under $500 we could find last-minute within a 20-minute drive. We were ready to have a horrific stay (I'm Black, so I was especially wary), and to have hilarious stories of chaos to tell for years to come. Much to our relief, the St. Charles Hotel was fine. The front desk staff was very kind and polite. The room was large, clean and fairly well-appointed (safe, fridge, microwave, hair dryer, basic toiletries, iron, ironing board, and luggage rack). The heat worked well, the water was hot, and the water pressure was decent. There were small things that needed cleaning or repair (mostly in the common areas), but overall the accommodations were fine. It seems to me that the owner is taking notes from the reviews and making improvements. My few suggestions: 1. Give the room windows a good clean; 2. Consider covering the window of the storage/staff room that faces Park Place with window film. Right now that window makes the hotel look sketchy from the street, but doing a nice job covering it up would go a long way. Just my unsolicited two cents. Anywho, I would stay here again. read more

Place is awesome. From the moment I arrived I was greeted by Kahn, the friendliest guy you'll find, and he showed me to my room. Great view, clean, and cozy. The place has character and feels like a bed and breakfast in that Kahn is looking for an opportunity to contribute to your enjoyment of the area and the comfort of your stay. Where to start --- ditto what Matt W. said? All around incredible service and stay. Cycling the Empire State Trail, my partner and I arrived on bicycles around 10:30pm and were welcomed with open arms by Kahn, who even offered to re-open the breakfast station in case we were hungry for fruit or bagels. Check in process was quick and easy, we got incredible recommendations, and our room was spotless and comfortable. It was spacious and basic, just like we needed - and a great price for being in the heart of Hudson. So grateful for the caring service, free breakfast, and comfortable room. If you are a person of color do not stay at this hotel they are racist and rude to the core the staff has No customer service experience what so ever . They profile as soon as you walk through the door I was told by the guy at the counter that if he was there earlier when I checked in he would have never let me stay at his hotel .He then proceeded to provoke and antagonize me and recording my reaction to his disgusting behavior I have been told this how they treat African American guests who stay at their hotel and they even went as far as calling the police on me after the counter person insulted me over and over . I spent four nights at this hotel. Whatever problems they had in the past have all been corrected. My room was clean. The heater worked perfectly, brand new television set, microwave, a safe, brand new sink and shower facilities. The front desk staff are courteous and very helpful. The room was quiet. Truly disgusting. Paid an outrageous amount for a large room and for the $400 per night I paid I expected more than stained sheets, broken fixtures, dirty walls and terrible service. The water in the shower smelt like molded cheese and even though we had to wait longer for our room to be cleaned, it didn't seem touched when we got in there. I stayed one night and found the place very clean in a good location. I felt the parking lot was safe. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely stay there again. Do not stay here. Let me repeat. Do - not - stay - here. This is the first bad review I've bothered to write on Yelp. Usually I'm only willing to take the time to endorse places I'm particularly enthusiastic about. This place was so memorably awful that I couldn't live with myself unless I vented publicly. The advertised price of the room was $69. When I called, after letting me know their computer system was down and then calling me back an hour later, they quoted me $129. I was making a last-minute request and didn't feel like bargaining, so I let it go. When we showed up, the whole lobby was undergoing a gut renovation. (Surprise.) Hammering, electric saws, exposed electrical wiring, construction workers cursing up a storm. The works. Proper signage? Roping off the area for customer safety? Nope. The room key didn't work, so we went down and got another. Then we went out to dinner and when we returned to the room, the new key didn't work. The room itself was so disgusting that my girlfriend and I couldn't bring ourselves to sleep in the sheets, but just jacked the heat and slept on top of the bed instead. The shower was full of grime and mold, so we didn't shower either. Also, when we were out at dinner, someone had been in our room. We double-checked before to make sure the main light and bathroom fan light were both off. We returned (after the second key failed and we had to go back down and get a third) and both lights were on. We went down and told the front desk, and they just responded that we were remembering wrong and no one had been in our room. When we told them--albeit rather emphatically--we'd double-checked, they said they didn't have time for this and walked away. At checkout, a different guy was at the front desk and we again let him know someone had been in our room between 5:30-10:30 the night before. Now it was "one of the cleaning crew." Nope. We had taken the dirty comforter off earlier and it was clear no cleaning had been done to the room in the meantime. We never did get the answer to that one. When we checked out, we let them know there was no way we were paying full price based on the level of service we received. The guy at the front desk responds, "Okay, can I see your driver's license?" What? I'm all for preserving historical buildings, but not when they're literally crumbling as you stay in them. The people who work here are indifferent and frustrating. This place should just give up and sell to a nice sleazy developer who will build cheap condominiums in their place. read more

I wish I could give -100 stars this place was so bad! It was a dump! My family basicly rented the entire hotel for my neices wedding on 8/7. Check in was supposed to be a 3pm, what a joke! None of the rooms were ready. We had a shuttle to take pepole to the wedding venue that departed at 4:30 pm but nobodys rooms were ready. The staff were horrible! Dirty, stains on the furniture in main lobby, and a very nice touch, there was a huge hole in the ladies room wall that had a beautiful view of the dirty parking lot outside. Every cleaning product has a distinct odor. So very odorous. My wife and I made up a term: 4F for far from fragrance free. Also maybe smoking was permitted for years and they've tried to scrub the nico smell. Not possible to do. Shabby in all ways. Can't even begin. Did they not check the room? I don't think they cleaned the room because when we got in there where peanuts near the bed and trail mix in the desk chair.... the carpet was a little run down. The area has the cozy old town feeling, so I understand the vintage look but this place looks a bit run down. The checkin lobby was small so if more than one party is checkin you feel a bit cramped. The rooms were large but the bathroom was small. But since it was four girls in the room, the extra space was nice for getting ready for the wedding we were attending. Coming back later that night they front lobby smelled of weed... the front desk attendant wasn't at the desk but I don't know if they are suppose to be there at 1130 at night?? Our group stayed in a 2-queen-bed room during the Winter Walk. It was a fair price, and the best value in the area. We only needed a place to store our belongings, park the car on a busy night, and to sleep; the St Charles fit the bill. The hotel appears to have recently remodeled their guest rooms. We had both a microwave and refrigerator. There were plenty of outlets available. I liked the bathroom set up, a sink separate from the toilet/shower, exhaust fan with heat lamp, and great water pressure. Outside of the room, the elevator was quick, there was a breakfast area and a small gym. The lobby looks modern, the hallways don't appear to have gotten the remodel yet, but looked fine. Coffee (really good) was available all day in the lobby. A drug store is a short walk away, as is a gas station if you need something after hours, and you're near plenty of bars and restaurants. I do have to point out that this is not a 5 star luxury hotel, it compares to a Comfort Inn. It's an independent hotel in an old building. If you're a light sleeper you might get woken up if there are kids running around, easily solved by turning the fan on the AC unit. There are much fancier options around the corner if you need more, but they come at a premium. This worked for us, and I'll look to stay here in the future when I visit. read more

Clean and comfortable, if your looking for the ritz you need to pay for that which means you should stay at WM. Farmer. They need to cover the front window and freshen up the facade. WOULD BE DISAPPOINTING EVEN AT HALF THE PRICE I have traveled extensively through the US and most continents, and have experienced hotels ranging from world class to outright gross. I care generally not about pure luxury, but rather about basics. I stayed at the St Charles Hotel to attend a local family event. I reserved a king suite for myself for the weekend, at a rate of $400+/night, plus additional rooms for other family members. The photos on line made the property appear presentable, and my primary concern was finding a property with an elevator, for a disabled family member. The sole reason I assigned even a single star is that the property is located in the heart of Hudson, and parking is provided. However it was hardly had a comfortable stay. I should have known there would be trouble in paradise when, after booking my rooms, I made another call a couple of weeks later to book an extra room. The front desk clerk, after about ten minutes of vainly attempting to access the property's reservation system, helpfully (?) suggested I use hotels.com instead (ahem). For $400/night, at a bare minimum I expect: Maid service daily. Room A/C that doesn't just come on, but cycles on AND OFF as it reaches the set temperature, so one does not wind up freezing late in the night. Separate bars of soap for the sink and the shower stall. An electrical outlet in the bathroom to plug in a night light. Bedside light switch controls for most, if not all, room lighting. An alcove for the suite's sofa bed, for a modicum of privacy. Phone staff capable of accessing the reservation system when I phone with a question or a change for my reservation. Front desk staff capable of immediately accessing the reservation system when I check in. Front desk staff who attempt to accommodate requests made by phone weeks in advance (such as that all guests in my party have rooms located on the same floor), as opposed to desk staff who make it clear they have no intention of going to any such trouble. While we are at it, front desk staff who are polite and welcoming, and are perhaps even dressed professionally, as opposed to sporting ripped denim. (At least the late night desk attendant was fine.) Ability to turn on the shower from outside the stall, in order not to be initially assaulted with cold water. An elevator that does not have open wiring surrounding the floor number buttons. Suffice it to say that none of my above bare minimum expectations were met. While the size of my king suite was ample, the layout was rather awkward. More to the point, the room was poorly appointed, with aging and seedy looking furniture, carpeting, and curtains. The bathroom was teeny tiny and inelegant, to be kind. The one bar of soap sums up the situation neatly: it was about 2" in diameter and maybe 1/8" thick, and again, that one bar had to be shuttled between sink and shower. Corners are cut everywhere here, from no maid service during my stay, to tired (again, to put it kindly) furnishings and finishes. Unacceptable at almost any price point, and certainly unacceptable at $400/night! To sum it up: THIS WAS A TERRIBLE VALUE. I could have been more comfortable staying at a local chain motel at less than half the price. Attention to detail and hospitality would be expected at this price point, but were entirely (READ: ENTIRELY!!!) absent at the St. Charles. read more

We were in town for a concert and this is really the only Hotel in town and to be honest that is why we chose it. This place is not much to look at from the outside that is for sure. In fact, some might pull in to the parking lot, take one look and say NO WAY. There are no frills here. Just a check-in desk and straight to the room. They do offer free continental breakfast but we had to leave so early that I wasn't able to try it. The Rooms: I was with a group of people and we had 2 connected double bed rooms. The rooms had clearly been renovated recently. The furniture and beds seemed new. The room was a decent size. The bathroom was very small and no frills that's for sure. The view was in a word...ugly. You looked out upon the backyards of a couple of triple-decker apartment buildings and a dumpster and and old mattress laying on the ground. Not pretty but the windows were actually so small that unless you made an effort you couldn't see out them anyway. All in all I would say if you need a quick place to stay in Hudson this is an affordable room. If you are in town for a show at Club Helsinki this is walking distance. And in my personal experience seeing two rooms they were clean. If you are very particular about what kind of hotel you stay in this is probably not the place for you. read more

Entire place smells like a hospital. Feels like you're staying in a haunted house. Checked into non smoking room. Smelt like smoke. Asked for an extra blanket (none on bed, just sheets) and were told there are none. Location is great, but they have nothing to offer inside the '(m)hotel' because the restaurant is closed permanently, only the side entrance works and I'm pretty sure everyone in the place was at the front desk complaining about something at one point or another. Bright, pretty front desk girl happy to expound upon Warren Street's offerings. But do your exploring before 5PM if you want to poke around any of those cute artsy fartsy stores and definitely get dinner sorted out early. Past nine, Hudson's 98% dead. The riverfront benches at the bottom of the hill aren't a bad spot to sneak a beer. Oh and there's this badass sword-wielding bronze lady-statue... Sorry. Hotel. Focus. Some facets of the building have character. The fat wooden railings. The bar area, which, sadly, is closed indefinitely for renovation...or disintegration. The rest all looks clean enough. Something other reviews have mentioned is the smell, and it's true; our room had the pungent aroma of cherry urinal cake. I worried it'd keep me from falling asleep. Fortunately the window was fully openable...the one, single, tiny window that looked out on a crumbling, littered alleyway. It allowed some fresh air to flow in, along with the sound of thudding base from some local delinquents' car. Eventually, astoundingly, I did nod off and slept soundly until the morning light crept in. The room's curtains are just for show and can't actually be drawn shut, and the shitty blinds just sort of diffuse the daylight. I almost feel bad giving this 2 stars as our room was surprisingly spacey and nice looking. However, the hotel does look a bit junky from the outside and the lobby. really needs to be updated. Also, the room was much too cold. Had to turn the fan on hot, and sometimes controlling the temperature was annoying, as was the fan's noise. All and all though, decent location, and for $100.00/night it is not a bad hotel. I booked this hotel 3 days. The price was $250 on Hotels.com. Hotels.com claimed there were only 2 rooms left and all the other hotels/B&B's were booked so I quickly jumped on it. I arrived, checked in and off I went. As I was looking again for hotels in this area, Hotels.com was offering the same room for $50 less. Awful. Avoid at all costs. This place is marketed as a little renovated boutique hotel online. The deception starts with the one painted wall and faux modern headboard that show up in the photos making the room look updated. In reality you are greeted with an old ratty carpet, smelly room, cracked old popcorn ceiling, prison sized window, a bed that is no better than sleeping on the floor, a heater that does not work without smelling like burning electronics, dirty towels like sandpaper, and noise in the middle of the night. There was a generator outside my window that kept turning on and off and the noise kept me awake all night. To sum up the place was noisy, dirty, smelly and I woke up after what little sleep I got with back pains. Conditions were worse than a roadside motel. Nope. Can't believe I had to stay here. Sleeping in my car might have been a better choice. Two nights. First of all this is a pretty broke down and busted hotel from the cheap plastic cups to the old carpet and l.e.d. lightbulbs. First night I was in a room that faced the street and heard motorcycles (in this small town, yes) until late into the night. Then Continental Breakfast service started at 6am and guess what? all of the 5 rooms around the stairwell on the second floor get to hear the cacophony of extremely loud early morning voices and clattering. So for the second day I got asked to change rooms away from the stairwell. Got the last room in the spot (because wedding goers were housed here) we walk in and I immediately am eating the smell of cologne? perfume? spray that is trying to mask cigarette smoke underneath. There is a sign posted on the doors to the hotel that reads this is a No Smoking Establishment. Well, obviously someone smoked inside this room and the housekeeping tried to cover it up with gross spray, that I'm now eating. I flagged down the housekeeper and tried to ask her if she smelled smoke and if there was anything we could do upon which she grabbed that aerosol can and tried to spray more. Unfortunately she did not speak English or Spanish in order for us to communicate. Dead end. Left to my own devices to troubleshoot. The magic of your sense of smell is that you get acclimated. So I put the heater on and opened up the window from 10am to 5pm (50 degree weather outside) thinking I was airing the room out). I had hung my dress in the bathroom and took a shower. Pulled one of the towels off the rack and wrapped my hair WITH A CIGARETTE SMELLING TOWEL. I realized at that moment that 1) the smoker went into the tiny bathroom, closed the door, and put on the fan to smoke. So 2) the towels and my dress hanging now smelled of smoke as well. Drying off.. I noted TEN BUG BITES on my legs. I panicked and ran down to the front desk. The girl there was perfectly nice and apologized for all the problems "I was having".. I? I'm having these problems? Bye. After I called her from back in my room and asked the manager to come up to talk to me. He said he smelled no smoke. Seriously. I showed him the photos of the bugbites and he said Terminex comes every month and that he had reports that all of the rooms were clean. Sir, why does Terminex HAVE to come to your hotel every month? I told him that if those bug bites were from worst case scenario that we'd be having more extensive talks. He asked if there was 'anything he could do'. Can't give me a different room. Can't house me in another hotel. Has no idea of how to get rid of the cigarette smoke has no comment on the bug bites. Don't stay here. read more

Not sure where to start with this hotel. My friend and I both had to call 6+ plus times individually until one of us got through to book a room. We were constantly told to call back another time and finally when my friend was able to book her room she also booked mine because we feared i would keep getting the run around and would not be able to book. We stayed for a wedding staying in reserved block of rooms at a "discounted" rate and had multiple other friends stay. We saw over 5 other rooms outside of ours, all of which were offensive for the price per night. This hotel and the rooms are absolutely disgusting. Our room wasn't as bad as some of the others and yet it still had stained sheets, broken fixtures, a bathroom door in which the lock didn't work, and the hot and cold was reversed in the shower. Other rooms we saw had chipping paint, lights hanging out of the wall, and even worse stains on the bedding. I would recommend finding any other place to stay in Hudson than the St. Charles Hotel. read more

I ignored all of the negative comments on here, since they seemed to deal with temporary inconveniences that were occurring do to the updates the hotel was going through. Since the update has almost been completed, most of the other peoples issues have been fixed. We stayed for 2 nights. We called the Hotel itself (not any of the sites). They gave us a great rate for Monday and Tues night. Our room was ready when we arrived at noon and they allowed us to check in and go up to the room. The Hotel is right on the city square park. Convenient to all of the downtown shopping. We were able to leave our car in the hotel lot and park for free so that we could walk all afternoon. Knowing that The Hotel is 150 years old, we were surprised at how updated most of the building was. Sam the manager, told us that they were just finishing up a full update. Our room was a bit smaller then we were used to, but was clean and fully updated including the bath room with a large shower. The best part was that it came with 2 Queen beds and not full beds like most hotels. The beds are firm, which we bot like. The morning breakfast was satisfactory, indeed better then most hotels that offer a free breakfast. Sam the manager made us feel welcome, as did others on the staff. We will stay here again. Also a shout out to Club Helsinki a few blocks away on Columbia. We had a blast there. great staff and a fun open mike Tuesday. read more

Very simple place to stay for a night or two if you need to be in Hudson. I had no high expectation prior to arriving, so I knew what I was booking. Very old school style place, motel-ish, but quaint. Some areas were bare near the lobby as if to be remodeled. It's a bare bones type of place but still clean and tidy from my experience.
