St. Cecila's in Oakley is one of the churches that we visited this year. It is a beautiful, old, classic church with pretty woodwork and intricate metalwork on the doors. You will find it's stone architecture beautiful with it's very high ceilings and stained glass throughout. After doing some research, we found that it's first mass was held in Oakley's town hall back in 1908. Not only do they have their own school, they have their own cemetery, too. In reading, I was impressed with all the different ways parishioners can volunteer and be an active participant. There is a mom's group, young adult group, community dinners, welcoming committee, as well as helping out with the Oakley food pantry. I'm assuming there must be quite a few weddings as they have their own wedding reservationist and wedding coordinator. However, the most unique way to contribute in my mind was an adopt-a-garden program. Parishioners can adopt one of the church/school landscaping plots to instill a sense of pride in the parish families. Great sense of community here. read more
