What can better than a High Five Fish Fryday? Why, a High Five Fish Frday Feast of course!
There are few things that get me going more than a good old fashioned Lenten fish fry, and St Boniface does not disappoint. For starters if you didn't know, St Boniface is the patron saint of Germany and he did a lot of awesome things. The coolest of which was he chopped down a tree said to be planted by Thor, and instead of being struck down by Chris Hemsworth's mighty hammer, he survived. His actions caused everyone to convert to Catholicism. Whoray religion!
If you have never been to a Fish Fry they are a celebration of community, smathered with some religion (usually a collared priest walking around), and the love of all things fried fish. Usually they are held in large social spaces- duh- meaning the gym or cafeteria. In the case of St Boniface, it is in the downstairs cafeteria, and you enter through the original girls entrance on the right (cue sexist joke in 3,2,1). You venture downstairs into a lively cafeteria and run immediately into the cashier with a list of fish offerings.
For 7 bucks you are treated to generous helpings of the standard fish fry staples- fish sandwiches or baked fish, fries, cole slaw, mac and cheese, and even a thing of apple sauce! Heck they even tossed in some dessert and drink- yes all for 7 bucks!!!! I have been to other fish fries alone where the same amount of food would cost at least 10 bucks.
The price is more than right and the taste was also comparable. The fish itself was pretty standard, the cole slaw sweet, the fries Sycso, and the mac and cheese gooey, decedent and delectable. The entire meal and experience can take you back to your elementary school days, but the food is much, much better. And the service! There are student helpers who take your tray to your table and even offer to get you a drink so you can avoid that awkward juggling of your tray and drink filling. If you still have room for dessert , there is a dessert table in the corner where you can pick your goodies.
Hours are from 4:30-7 on Fridays in Lent and is cash only. There is plenty of parking in the huge back lot. Head on down and dig on in. Don't feel guilty about the calories because I have enough Catholic guilt for the both of us. read more
