If you're walking along the Water of Leith on your way to exploring Dean Village, you'll come across St. Bernard's Well. It's a Greco-Roman temple/literal-well-because-it's-a-natural-spring-with-mineral-rich-water from the 18th century that supposedly had (has?) healing properties... or so locals believed. "Bibendo Valeris" is inscribed above the doorway: drink and you will be well. The fascinating landmark and domed structure surrounded by columns is home to a statue of Hygieia, the ancient goddess of health. There IS a room underneath (where the well itself is), but it's not open to the public with any sort of regularity. I've had the chance to go in though! There's an old pump in the center of the room, small stained glass windows, and a celestially inspired mosaic ceiling. I think it's very cool, especially if you do get the chance to go in! Would be fun if they could do something here like the Roman Baths in Bath do where you can taste the water too! read more
