I was just sitting in my office thinking about some of the blessings I have received and my mind remembered the wonderful medical care my son received at St. Bernard hospital. My son was having some respiratory discomfort and the doctor at a well known medical facility in Chicago did not seam to be helping him. I live close to St. Bernard and my wife said we should take my son to St. Bernard. I would not have thought to take him there even though he gets great dental care at St. Bernard. So we took him there. Long story short he had two serious medical conditions that needed immediate care. They admitted him that day and performed two operations on him in the coming days. He recovered completely. Not only was the medical care excellent but the staff, nurses and doctors were wonderful. I mentioned to my Veterans Administration doctor that I consider St. Bernard a good hospital. She said "St. Bernard is a wonderful hospital ." She said people do not know what a great hospital St. Bernard is. Well my family knows. I cannot recommend St. Bernard highly enough. read more

Important Health Warning: Please exercise caution when considering this hospital for the care of your loved ones. My aunt underwent hip surgery here after breaking her hip, and tragically, her heart stopped during the procedure. To make matters worse, the equipment used to monitor her heart was not functioning properly, which led to avoidable complications. The surgery should have been canceled since the equipment was not functioning. She should have been transferred but hospitals don't like transferring patients to other hospitals because it results in financial loss. They basically contributed to her premature death. The doctor said she didn't know it was broken until after the procedure began. She apologized and was very empathetic but that doesn't change the facts. No one should have a surgically procedure without a working heart monitor. She had no prior history of heart problems, and I had requested a transfer to a higher-ranked hospital for better care. She was in pain and didn't want to move and stayed. I buried my aunt , and I want you to know you have rights so exercise them. However, the hospital assured me they could provide the same level of care, which, unfortunately, was not the case. When it comes to medical care, convenience should never outweigh the quality of care. Illinois is home to four nationally ranked hospitals, including the University of Chicago and Northwestern. I strongly encourage you to consider these institutions, where you can be confident in the expertise and resources available. Rush is a great hospital and Loyola is a good hospital. Avoid this place by any means necessary. Please make informed decisions when it comes to healthcare. Your loved ones deserve the best care possible. read more

I read all the other reviews, & I was shocked, I have an review that is totally opposite, My review is for the ENT doctor at the new building on 63rd Street. His name is Dr. Pollak. I was referred to him for "ear wax removal". I was so impressed with his skills, mannerisms, professionalism, & his expertise, I will never forget him for restoring my hearing. Before my 2nd visit, I could not hear the phone ringing, doorbell, alarm, water running in the sink, people laughing & talking, cars traveling down the street, music, TV on vol 100, & even worse- Could not hear my boss talking to me. I thought that everyone driving down the street had a brand new set of tires because I could not hear them. Gratefully, I totally praise this Dr. for his expertise in restoring my hearing. I did a "praise Dance" as soon as he had completed my visit. When leaving the building, there was noise all around my head. I am a very, very quiet person & for the 1st time ever, I did not mind all the commotion around me. It was so good to be able to hear. I was so excited with my new found hearing that I personally delivered the Dr. a beautiful bouquet of flowers that I personally made my self. Imagine if people took the Dr's flowers for saving their lives, being professional, & getting you back on track with your living & being healthy. It was very well worth it. Wish I could take him some every 30 days. I'm so sorry that the people who wrote their reviews are not as happy as I am. I will be eternally grateful to Dr. Pollak, as LONG AS I LIVE. I'm also going to contact someone in the administration Dept, to inform them of what an excellent job this docotor does. Hope that one of them reads my review. read more

St Bernard hospital isn't exactly your new state of the art facility. Having worked as an architect doing health care architecture for over 20 years I can speak from experience. The hospitals I worked on were either new buildings or existing spaces renovated to bring them up to state of the art facilities. This hospital is located in Englewood. I ended up seeing a urologist down in their new POB building which is a beautiful new building located right on 63rd street. Anyway I ended up coming back for a procedure in the hospital last week. While the hospital is very dated the few people I had interaction with were super professional & courteous. Marie is the nurse that called me a few days before my procedure and gave me a step by step on what to expect and where to report on the day. On the day of my procedure I checked in at admitting on the first floor and then was sent up to the 4th floor where I met Marie. She has a super friendly personality, was informative & walked me through the steps. She greeted me an prepped me for my procedure. She told me they would not be giving me a general anesthesia, but not to worry because I would be in LA LA Land. (Little did I know) When the time came she wheeled me down to the 3rd floor where my procedure was to take place. WOW when I saw the area where my procedure was to take place I mentioned that it looked like something out of the 1920's movie because of the antiquated spaces. Once again she rechecked all the medical information and made sure that all the information was correct before passing me off to the Christine (the nurse in the same day surgery area). She was also very friendly and rechecked all the medical info just to make sure it was still me . When the time came they wheeled me into the procedure room and Dr Butler (Dr Butler) came in as did the anesthesiologist (Dr Luk). There were a couple of other nurses in the room. They had me roll over into my side and the rest was LA LA Land history. I was OUT & WOW this was one surrealistic dream state procedure. I wish there was someway I could have recorded the visions I had while I was in LA LA Land. What seemed like 5 minutes was closer to 40 minutes. As I slowly came to I was convinced that I had been teleported to some alien space ship. As I came out of the dream state I tried to frantically hang on to the surrealistic visions I just envisioned. Much like a very, very vivid dream the images hung for a short time as they faded quickly into oblivion. (I wish I could have recorded it). Even though St Bernard is a very dated facility I felt like the staff did an outstanding job. Everyone from Dr Butler, Dr Luk, Christine and especially Marie made the experience a good one read more

This has to be one of the worst hospitals in Cook County Illinois. If I could have gone anywhere for my emergency needs, I would have chosen any facility other than this so-called "healthcare delivery system." A significant portion of the staff members in this place are obscene and unprofessional. When they aren't asking you a myriad of irrelevant questions, pretending they are doing actual work, they gossip about their coworkers. When they inquire about the reason for your emergency room visit, it's not because they genuinely want to discover what is causing your symptoms and provide solutions. In my opinion, they do this to give you vague results on your discharge papers to rid themselves of you as soon as possible. For instance, if I'm having severe headaches, vomiting, and unbearable stomach pain, they'll document the conclusion as a general headache. I'm very understanding and empathetic when it comes to healthcare professionals. They work extremely hard to give patients adequate care; however, this is not the case at St. Benard Hospital. I wouldn't recommend this "hospital" to anyone, not even if it was the last one on this planet. read more

If I could give this place a negative star I would so instead I'm just going to write a review on a facility that needs to be revamped and restructured or just closed down. I have seen many Hospitals unfortunately, and they are normally clean and I was just thrown back how much trash and debris in front of the hospital. Although, the inside was clean from what I what I saw...why wouldn't they keep the front and side of the building just as clean. I had a family member born here and the way they treat the patient and I mean the child as is like a barnyard of animals that they are just waiting to hurry up because they have to get to the next patient. I did find a couple of staff workers that were trying to help us out but they don't have the authority and if I knew now what I knew then...I swear I would have been more vocal! I believe the Doctor must have had a dinner date because all she kept doing was pumping my relative with medicine that we found out later could have hurt the child as well as the mother. They had rules about the father being there and if he couldn't then you had to be given permission for another person to be there...I'm not trying to be funny but do they live in the world we live in right now. I'm also not saying that all fathers are insensitive and don't care for their child, but when you find out that they won't be there what is the problem. The mother needs support at this time of life. What if the father is not in the city or is unable to be their for whatever reason the mother is suppose to suffer. Then my family member was lied too because she was told that her other child could be there and then they basically said oh sorry after the baby is born then yep you guessed it they said No again...why not get things together because that is not the first time I have heard that rules at other Hospitals but to get the child's hopes up and then to find out it wasn't true...may seem like it is nothing to some but it is a let down for them. When we left we were told that she would get some food and they never came to feed her, but one of the nurses who was nice did give her a sandwich because she kept calling and even after 3 or 4 hours no food was delivered to her room. This just embodied everything to me that if you are not a person in the middle class or rich then many facilities feel they can treat their patients like cattle and without empathy...very disappointing and I pray I never have to go here for anything! Horrible experience. Went to the emergency room to meet a family member who had recently been in a car accident. The family member had arrived in an ambulance without feeling on her entire right side yet the felt it ok to sit her in a wheelchair in the waiting room and informed her that there was 4 people ahead of her. Really?! While waiting to be seen by even a triage nurse, there was people sitting in the waiting room that had been waiting to see a doctor for hours. The nurses (admitting) yelled at the various patients and didn't seem to have any customer service skills. Point, blank, period, If you can afford to go to another hospital, run not walk to somewhere else. I felt sick just sitting in there. This hospital needs a complete overhaul. I went into St. Bernard hospital today for their dental practice . I personally did not have a long wait , but I heard others complaining in seating area. But other than that , I had a great experience . From the man at front office desk, to the very nice nurse to the amazing doctor. It was doctor Nash . I hate going to the dentist ( think it's all of America's consensus of dentists )but that woman took out two teeth before I could blink . I felt NO PAIN . Now hours later I'm enjoying my family meal and my mouth is no longer numb and I still feel NO PAIN ! Like I never had dental work today . I have future appointments with her . Who knew about bone growth in ur mouth !!! Needless to say Dr. Nash was quick, efficient , knowledgeable, helpful and nice Need I say more . So good job St. Bernard hospital. So i hurt my foot. Not a big secret. On this particular Sunday morning my foot was in bad shape...like super duper bad shape. Unfortunately for me the nearest hospital in my area is St. Bernard. Uh oh. What I know of this place isn't good, and that's Ben Wilson died here after not being treated for a gunshot. Oh boy. So i get to the emergency room and get tossed in a room where the male nurse does most of the work early working over my toe. Ok, good, not gentle, but dammit effective. Ok people lets get this foot thing done, right? Not a chance. Despite the nice flirty nurses and friendly staff, there seemed to be lots of confusion. In fact if i didnt open my eyes any sooner i'd probably would have been strapped up to an EKG machine (No i'm not Larry, read the chart!). And despite finally cleaning and fixing my foot i sat and waitied...and waited...and waited...oh no, i didnt have to wait for the results of any tests or anything, its just no one had decency to get back to release me or give me a prescription. Fuck i'd taken TWO full 90 minute naps before i saw the doctor (who was a cool dude btw!) So even longer in this room i sat and sat and sat and slept...sleeping my day away in a fucking emergency room. Here's the best part, so they wrap my foot, then the doc comes later and he hasnt even seen my foot yet, so off comes the fucking wrap!!!! At the end of the day when its time to finally leave the nurse says she has no time to wrap my foot back up. Seriously? What do you do here if that's not what you do here? This is 20 minutes after i've pushed a chair into the hallway because my foot isnt wrapped, i have no shoes, havent been released and havent urinated the entire day, so my bladder is ready to burst. yes I Bobby Knighted a chair for the cause of urination. So finally i said fuck it.....and started walking. randomly saw the doc on the way out and he did give me my prescription. with sandals in hand find i find the nearest washroom. i call for a cab, yet cabs dont come to Englewood, and if they do they dont know where the fuck this place is. so i'm waiting even longer now for a cab that's not coming. frustration kicks in and i head back to the emergency room and find another nurse, asking if she can at least give me the wrapping and tape and i'd wrap my own fuckin foot. She must be the head nurse because she has no idea whats going on and finally asked which room i was in, then found that nurse and gave it to her hard in japanese. I dont know japanese but i'm guessing the conversation went something like this; "why the fuck is this man asking for shit to wrap his foot, and says you have no time to do it? you're stuffing your fat fucking face with crab cakes for 15 minutes and you cant wrap this man's foot? Bitch you betta get yo ass in that room!" So she makes some excuse and the nurse finally wraps my foot. This is a good thing because its been hours upon hours for a minor foot issue, plus after numerous calls to Yellow taxi i still have no cab, which is great because its now its raining, and the kid with the hurt wrapped foot has started to walk home....wearing sandals....wearing a completely soaked foot wrapping. Awesome day. next time im injured id rather go to dr. nick from the simpsons than anywhere near this place. and if 911 is called and they are taking me here you just as well open up the back of the trunk and dump me into mcdonalds, as at least they'll mope near me and ask if I need a cheeseburger or something. read more

So I went to the emergency room with a client. Oh my goodness!!!! A patient passed out no one saw her fall ( it was clear she needed immediate help when she arrived!!) another lady who clearly needed psychiatric services was yelling and no one gave her an sedative or called the police, I have some concerns about confidentiality ( people opening curtains, saying info in front of others, etc.), someone was restrained by the police, and we waited in the waiting room for 6 hours because they had two nurses on staff. read more

I have not had time to write an adequate review of this wonderful hospital until now. When I lived close to Hyde Park/Englewood border, I was rushed to the nearest emergency room (which was St. Bernard Hospital, even though UChicago Medicine was where I initiated my care). I am a dialysis patient, and the problem stemmed from my dialysis access. It had gotten clogged and infected and as a result, I got septic. This wonderful hospital treated and diagnosed me immediately once I got to the ER, then they admitted me into a room of my own. The cleaning staff kept the place spotless and I never felt like I couldn't use the toilet during my entire stay of a week there. I had five specialists look over me. They helped save my heart from getting an infection and then had my dialysis unit give me an antibiotic for three weeks afterward through an IV drip after I was discharged. Everyone treated me with respect and care, and they all listened to my needs and concerns. I am also white and don't make a lot of money (struggling artist), and they did not make me feel like I was different like some other hospitals and clinics have done in Chicago. I don't live close to them now but I highly recommend them to everyone I speak with. UChicago Medicine, UI Health, and St. Bernard Hospital are the two best hospitals in the city of Chicago. I a,m sorry for others' negative experiences and I am also not ignoring their experiences which are also valid. I am just stating that I had a wonderful experience and they saved me! The service at the place is absolutely unacceptable. Not only did they try to force my sister into a hospital which our insurance didn't cover, but they refused to let us see her after she was sexually assaulted because she was "abusive". She isn't abusive. She suffers from bipolar disorder and was having a breakdown. She did not attempt to hurt the doctors but they liked to us and told us she tried to punch him. The doctors made jokes at my sister's expense right to our faces, and we stayed at this hospital for over 18 hours just trying to see her or move her to her normal psychiatric hospital. We caught the doctor lying to us 3 times and called him out every time. This place is also a literal dump. Trash everywhere. People starting fights in the waiting room. It was absolutely disgusting and the service was unacceptable. I would give this place 0 stars if possible. read more

I would advise anyone not to go to this hospital ever. it is the most unprofessional hospital I have ever Been in starting from the staff, who walk around the halls talking about not only their personal lives, but patients, and coworkers as well for the floor to hear. There are intercoms blasting all day and night while patients are trying to rest and get well. They let patients scream out of pain before they even help. Thier bedside manner is atrocious. I was in tears while there I wanted to leave so bad. This is the worst hospital in chicago and if they would h ave advised me of this before going there, I would have told the ambulance to take me elsewhere. Please stay away from this hospital. I experienced a chest tightness for over 7 hours so I admitted myself to the ER at St Bernard Hospital. Surprisingly, without delay, they took me to a treatment room right away. They performed an EKG, Xray, and blood labs. The respiratory therapist gave me a breathing treatment for my asthma. The doctor inquired about my history and the possible causes of my chest tightness. He eased my mind when he told me the labs did not indicate a heart attack but as a precaution, held me for observation and drew my blood again. Despite spending 4 hours in the ER, I felt all the staff performed admirably and professionally. Overall, I felt I was thoroughly examined. I would return to St Bernard. read more

This hospital find ways to get over on patients and their insurance companies. I kno four people who went in the St. Bernard facility for physicals and all four people left with the same diagnosis with follow up visits. It is nearly impossible for this to even be possible. Honestly if I could rate 0 stars I would. Even if you are clearly in an unbelievable amount of pain and need someone immediately, they will take their time to get someone to you, on average 45mins to an hour wait time. Imagine that, sitting in agonizing pain for an hour while some wanna-be "doctor" is flirting with a barely legal desk worker. They are notorious for malpractice and I'm amazed that they are still up and running. I've had my back x-rayed numerous times by them over MANY years hoping I'd finally get an ACTUAL doctor who knew what they were doing, but sadly each time I got one even dumber than the last that said, "Your back is completely fine, here are some of the lowest grade muscle relaxers for the pain" which of course never worked. I was finally able to go to a Chiropractor and within my SECOND visit he found that the disks in my lower back weren't near as big as they should be. My vertebrae were practically grinding against each other. I have almost no medical knowledge when it comes to finding skeletal issues in an x-ray, but it was clear as day what was wrong. So to all "doctors" at St. Bernards in Jonesboro, Arkansas, I wish you the worst in life for making me go through life in constant pain. I know you won't, because of how you disgusting people are, milking injured and vulnerable people for their money, but you should feel ashamed of yourselves. read more

July 26, 2011 I give this hospital NOT one star,but if I have to give it a rating just to write a review this is what it is going to be! ... This is the WORST HOSPITAL IN THE WORLD! In 1994 I took my son there because he had a seizure and while in the ER a nurse on duty came to put meds in his IV and when I asked her "what it was" she stated "I don't know." Now to the future...my father had a seziure on Sunday July 24th, 2011 and UNFORTUNATELY he had to be taken to this hospital. Well, he had his first stroke 2yrs ago and was taken here, well Dr. Vaiyda became his physcian and was "ok", but my grandmother & I realized that he was sleeping too much and not eating. I took him back for a follow up and the only thing she (the doctor) did was touch his hand and give me another perscription for meds. To make a very long story as short as possible. On 7/26 my grandmother went to visit my dad and found that he had not had any brkfst or had been washed up, his room was dirty and the Dr. had not been in to see him and they weren't sure if she was coming in. How in the world do you take care of a patient if you are NOT available?!!!!!!!!!!!!! I plan on suing the SHIT out of this hospital! read more
