A mustn't miss place if visiting the local area. The Priory Church of St Mary & St Bega is one of the finest mediaeval buildings in Cumbria that is still in regular use as both a church, history centre and community centre. Apart from the beautiful building, visitors can view displays not only about the church and the story of Bega, but also about the history of the village, the old Theological College (only one in England during the 1800's apart from Oxford and Cambridge), St Bees School, and the village itself. And of course, the story of St Bees Man, the mediaeval knight, whose perfectly preserved body was discovered during an archaeological dig in 1981. Admission is free but donations towards its upkeep are always welcome. read more
