Worth visiting chiefly for the east window the artist Henry Holiday was commissioned to design a memorial for Sir John Marshall, by Reginald Dykes Marshall. It was completed in 1879 and shows figures from the Old Testament Ruth, Isaac, Isaiah and Jonah among them below representations of well-know stories from the New Testament; Christ and Nicodemus, Christ and the Woman from Samaria, the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Get there early on a sunny morning to see it in its best light.
The church building itself is a not very remarkable example of Old English style designed by Anthony Salvin (1779-1881). The exterior is of soft sandstone from Eden valley, the rest of the church is from local stone. It features one of the finest small organs in the north (stop sniggering you at the back). read more
