I've been volunteering in the St. Anthony's Dining Room & Free Clothing for 4 years. The organization does a great job creating a meaningful, organized and fun volunteer experience. It took me a while to find a nonprofit organization that could do all 3 things and maintain engagement for months/years. St. Anthony's is run by incredibly passionate staff. Volunteer shifts can range from a semi-full day in the Dining Room (~4.5 hours) 7 days a week to a couple hours in the Clothing Program on weekdays. It's a great place to bring a friend or family member to bond as well as corporate groups. read more

Not only are they a fantastic place to donate clothes, food, housewares & furniture (they'll even pick up!), but they've been doing amazing things for the community for almost 60 years. I just now got back from a half day of working in the dining room, and what an experience. I served trays, I gave out bread (AND butter), I bussed tables, I chatted, I smiled, I got in trouble for trying to take trays before people were finished, I got called ma'am, I had someone guess my age (God bless him). . . . I'm exhausted, and EXHILIRATED. These are the people we walk by on the streets every day. The ones that most of us avert our eyes from when passing --- uncomfortable about what they might ask us. I tell you what --- I've been a long time believer of eye contact and a smile at the very least, even if you don't want to give money, and I can't reinforce that belief enough. Seeing these people in the dining room, tearing into their nice hot meal (probably the only one they'll get that day), they're PEOPLE. They're not asking for anything (maybe more napkins), or doing "weird" things or whatever it is we normally imagine when we talk about The Loin, or SFs homeless in general. They're families. They're having lunch dates. They're on their lunch breaks from work. They're bringing food home to neighbors or friends who can't make it in. They thank you for coming, and taking their trays and refilling their water. They say, "God bless you" and they really appreciate what you're doing. It puts things into perspective and it really made me feel more fulfilled than I have in a long time, and I loves me some volunteer work y'all. We had lunch with Kenneth, who had a fantastic sense of humor, even if his stories didn't make much sense chronologically. Indian Joe (the local celebrity) was as sweet as I had imagined. Indian Joe hangs out on the corner of Golden Gate and Jones, you'll see his cart --- he's currently accepting trust fund donations. I will DEFINITELY be back, and I suggest you try it out too. read more

The Asian Granny Mafia Among the many interesting communities that are routinely ignored by pretty much everybody ("the media," politicians, newcomers) is the Asian Granny Mafia that runs the Tenderloin/Mid-Market area. Most of these ladies are in their 70's, 80's and even 90's. They are always coherent, neat, and organized. Very few use walkers, or exhibit any other health problems. And NOBODY messes with them; they practice Tai Chi while you're still sleeping off that hangover. Some eat their meals and leave; others pack up containers, usually vegetables and rice. I have never seen them drink the "juice," or eat bread; unwanted fruit seems to be the prime objective. They move quickly and efficiently through the dining room, and then they are gone. Sometimes this fruit is sold later on street corners, along with other items from the various free-food programs; primarily packaged goods that are not a part of their diets. Which is why they live so long. "One dollar!" "One dollar!" is the only English necessary, although most of them can communicate perfectly well in English when necessary. Most of their customers would rather pay one dollar on the black market than five-dollars at the corner store for that box of cereal, or bag of rice, or bottle of apple juice. Every now and again the police roust the Grannies; make them move from wherever they are to a block or so away. Every now and again some misinformed individual will criticize the Grannies for "gaming the system." Au contraire, mon ami; these ladies are a prime example of the entrepreneurial spirit at work. They are taking what would otherwise be wasted and utilizing it, recycling, if you will. Unfortunately, they are about the only example of neighborhood economic activity in the Tenderloin/Mid-Market area. Apart from a bunch of ugly, over-priced, shoddy high-rise apartment buildings and acres of vacant commercial space on and near Market Street, the much hyped economic renaissance is AWOL. A worthy recipient for your donation of used clothing, furniture, working appliances, kitchenware, and the like. You can drop off smaller items at their location on the corner of 8th and Harrison, or a team with a truck will come to your home for the bulky stuff. The time frame they give you for picking up is a narrow one, and they tend to arrive earlier rather than later, so you won't waste your day waiting for them to show up. Receipts are given to those who itemize their taxes. A great way to empty those overloaded closets and help the less fortunate at the same time. read more

Years ago I was homeless in Frisco and remember getting in line (blocks long) and waiting to get into St. Anthony's for a tray of decent grub, and talking to all these WW2, Koean, and Vietnam vets in line with me, the most miserable people that I ever thought I would be sitting down to eat with. I have to echo the other reviewer's sentiment that this really is a great place to drop off your used clothing, furniture, etc. as well as canned goods. St. Anthony's helps the poorest of the poor in San Francisco and provides them with free clothes, food, and medical care. You can arrange a pick up for your donation. Also, during the week before Thanksgiving and the week before Christmas, St. Anthony's has a curbside program where you can just drive up to their main location on Golden Gate and have a volunteer come out to your car and pick up your donation of food, clothes or money. You don't even have to get out of your car and they will give you a receipt right on the spot. It really is a great organization and one that won't inundate you with mail after you donate. read more

Great organization! But I found out that they got rid of their furniture department a year or so ago and will no longer pick up donations. They were nice enough to refer me to St. Vincent de Paul, which does pick up furniture donations. read more

I volunteered with a group of international scholars, sorting donated clothing for the St Anthony clothing "store" (free clothing for those in need). I was so impressed with the volunteer coordinator and all the staff members, as well as the cleanliness, efficiency, and organization of the space. It was easy to register and get started volunteering, and it felt good to share our time and efforts with such a well-run organization. They told us they always need donations, and especially they need soaps and sheets/bedding at this time. I intend to donate some of those items soon. They also have the kitchen and need volunteers there as well. We had a really good experience with our event at St Anthony, and look forward to doing it again. read more

I've volunteered here several times and to be able to give my time to help out others in our community is a wonderful feeling and St. Anthony's provides you with that opportunity. i have been volunteering at St Anthony's on & off for 10+ years. i am currently working a 2 saturdays/month schedule and i wish i could give more of my time. unlike other neighborhood spots, all their funding is private donations, so they are smaller than Glide, but still AMAZING in what they do. its not a "soup kitchen" its a dining room!! they insist that the guests are treated with kindness, dignity and respect..the way you would treat guests in your own home.. and i love that about them! the guests are the most intelligent, amazing folks you'll meet.. i've had conversations about music, politics, sports, etc.. with these folks. the most well rounded and appreciative individuals you will have the honor of serving. i HIGHLY recommend you try it! read more

Volunteering at the emergency winter shelter was a wonderful experience. Staff is friendly, kind, and well-organized. They are clearly making a positive impact on the community, and bringing people in from the cold on frigid winter nights. We helped hand out blankets and serve/clear up dinner for guests. I've been donating at St Anthony's for years now, but always at the old donation center over on Mission. So yesterday was my first visit to the Foundation on Golden Gate. And I was blown away by the energy levels in the lobby. The guys coordinating everything in the lobby were so kind and gracious. "How are you today, Ma'm?" "How can we help you, Ma'm?" "What is your name, Ma'm?" "Well, it's very nice to meet you Miss Cathy". They were just great and they were so BIG and Handsome. St. Anthony Foundation is the Tenderloin's best non-profit. I guess you learn alot when you have been around over 50 years. Most of the other agencies are less then 30years old and have large staff turn over. And keep on looking for various funding sources which make them change their purpose each time they receive another grant. St. Anthony Foundation understands its mission and provides the critical services. I also hear it provides the best meals ... sorry to say I have not had the personal experience or need to try out their daily meals service. I lost my job a year ago and unfortunately I couldn't find another one yet. I went for the first time to pick up clothes at St. Anthony's 2 months ago. The clothes are very cheap and I couldn't find more than 2 T-shirts for my size (big). Today I went again and the same story (cheap clothes, small sizes), however I saw one person asking the manager for special clothes (big sizes I guess or better quality). I suspect that place runs in favoritism because neither time I was there it was announced to everybody that you can ask for special clothes. There is not any notice posted about it. Why????? Why only some people get some nicer clothes?. The clothes are very cheap. It seems that the worst goes for the clients and the best simply is stolen or lost or something happens. read more

I've been a patient of St. Anthony for a year. I see two different doctors for two different things. I've have nothing but exceptional service from both. I went from being a sick person with a lot of different health issues and bad feet, to getting the right medication and seeing results due to their thoroughness.
