There are a number of Sunday masses to choose from and the congregation including the priests is really friendly. There is a parking lot behind the church, which is convenient. I am not a member nor have I never been to a service. But I have…read moretaken part in several para church ministries. I don't know anything about the senior pastor at all so I can't comment about that. Usually visitors to a church assess the church by the sermon and music. But I have the unique experience of assessing by the inner workings I have observed and taken part in. Calvary Baptist Church is the church that the Billy Graham Association uses when they either have an event in NY or when they have a TV event and need phone counselors. I do have to comment on what one of the reviewers said. They said they like it when only one pastor preaches. I have to respectfully disagree. It is much healthier for the church members to hear different perspectives rather than just one person and it also shows that the pastor is not a control freak. If he was he would be hesitant to share the pulpit. It is also healthier for the pastors to be able to hear what others are saying in order to grow spiritually themselves. That way they can be accountable to the other pastors and not just be a dictator. If you know of a large church where the pastor refuses to share the pulpit be sure he is a dictator. Having more than one preacher is a healthy sign especially in a large church. The pastor I have worked with projects on at Calvary is extraordinarily humble so much so that he would be embarrassed at being named in a review so I won't name him. I worked under him on some volunteer projects and his leadership is what made them run smoothly. He had respect for all of the volunteers and didn't feel he had to control us or even know much about us in order to trust us to do our jobs. At many churches these days the control issue is big. If you don't let them control you then you are called rebellious. I am referring to churches you would know of if you are a Christian in NYC. I never experienced this at Calvary. Volunteering here was always an uplifting experience. Calvary is spiritually and socially solid. For my non conformist personality denominational churches seem too restrictive with their man made rules and regulations that have nothing to do with God but rather tradition. Calvary did not come across that way at all. The congregation seems to have freedom and is warm and friendly. They seem to be less self absorbed than many other large congregations in NYC. Many large churches in NYC have this attitude that you go to church and don't dare reach out to anyone because they have their own lives. Calvary doesn't seem that way. My volunteer work with them was from 2001 -2009. So I was able to observe how they function with each other over the course of many years. It is kind of silly to me to read 5 star reviews of other churches I have seen here by visitors to a church who may be touched by the music or theater of it all or the pastors charisma but know nothing of what goes on in the day to day functions of the church. I happen to know the inner workings of a few of those churches and I know they are at best cult like in terms of how they function. But if you attend the service as a visitor all you see is the production they put on. Calvary is pretty basic and sincere from what I have seen and by basic I mean no theatrics to fool you. Unlike many other NYC churches Calvary is not known for their pastor so it is not man focused but God focused. I have been a Christian after being an agnostic for years since the 1980's. I have been to many churches in NYC and know people at most popular churches in NYC due to my volunteer work. I have never heard anything bad about the church and it is the only large church other than Evangel I haven't heard anything bad about in the last 20 plus years that I have been a Christian. For that they get 5 stars. There are no scandals here unlike many of the other large churches in NYC. Here is a list of the ministries they offer. Outreach Missions Arts and Media Education Men Women Young Adults Youth Children New York School Of The Bible The New York school of the bible offers a certificate program. Calvary is a good solid caring church.

Based on that mass I deduce it is meant to appeal to the bicultural cohort (to which I belong). Lovely to see full families, children, teens, young and mature adults there. I give it a 5+ star rating especially because it angers me someone gave it a 2 star rating because it has mainly Spanish services a a few English. For that alone it should get 10 stars for being an island of refuge for many in a sea of Anglo-oriented ministries. Considering this is one of the most diverse areas of the US, it puts the other local churches to shame for their lack of inclusion of the Spanish-speaking community's needs.
