I was not raised in a church, came to have faith only in my adult life, and it is not this church…read more Given this, here is a more objective review of my wife's church since I'm actually not a member at this time. ;-) Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd is a great community to visit, and even join if you feel called. The Pastor is young and energetic, while honoring the traditions of the Lutheran faith. The people are generous and friendly, with many great ways to reach out into the community and world. The sanctuary is open and welcoming. As with most communities of faith, one needs to look at a couple different perspectives to find a spiritual home. Good Shepherd offers a solid Lutheran liturgy, honoring the tradition while worshiping God. The community is also very dynamic, with a great eye for the larger Christian community. Their gifts are shared within the community and neighborhood with Bible studies, neighborhood party / rummage sale, and on site preschool. The larger, regional community is served by giving gifts to families in need for Holidays, serving with the Night Ministry in Chicago, and being an initiating member of an Interfaith Mission, serving communities within a few hours' drive. They also have a strong relationship with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI), further serving the larger community, and having a international reach such as addressing malaria in Africa. We started attending when living in the area temporarily while our home was being renovated and never left, even though it's a long ride from our home. I babysit my 2 year old grand nephew on Sundays and he attends bridge kids. At first my niece was nervous, she's a single mom and protective. One visit to bridge kids and that child can't wait for next week. I appreciate the investment Bridge places in their children's ministry and have experienced first hand what a 2 year old can learn and how what he's learning has impacted his life. He talks about Jesus and has made friends. There truly is the exact right space for every person, adult, college, high school, grade school and little ones at this church.

If you are not familiar with the Evangelical Free Church, it is a normal, mainstream evangelical church. No weird doctrines or anything. :-) Trinity International University located in Deerfield is actually a Evangelical Free school. The church has a lot of good programs and support groups for the community, too. The congregation, I feel, is a pretty good mix - it's not all rich, white North Shore folks. :)
