It's a good vibe, quiet, well-light, and perfect for parking yourself there for long periods of time. Nothing beats Rutherford to me. I'm not even a University student anymore and here I am! North will always be the superior side to me because I'm more of a lone wolf. It's also close to HUB for people who need food/a study break.

The university has a plethora of study spaces, but for me Rutherford is the best. Rutherford South…read moreoffers many options of plug-ins for your laptop though there could be more. The ground floor spaces tend to be noisier that floors 2-5. My imagination loves the tight narrow lines of bookshelves on the floors. It reminds me of scenes from Ghostbusters. I half expect Slimer to pop out any second. Speaking of ghost stories, Rutherford North has the distinction of being the only place in my life where I felt like I had a semi-haunted experience. Many years ago I was in the basement looking at some rare books and heard faint whispering in the background. There appeared to be nobody else in the vicinity, but there were clear sounds of a whispered conversation going on. It made the hairs on the back of my head stand up and I still get a little spooked when using the basement washrooms in the North. Of course the experience coincided with having been up the entire previous night finishing off a paper, so the psyche was a bit scrambled! The reading room in Rutherford North is my favourite place to study. It's quiet but not too quiet and it's got a ton of character.

There are statues and monuments everywhere, big soaring towers, "Lunchbox Joe" - a lifelike sculpture of a guy sitting on a bunch by Seward Johnson, a sculpture named "Catching Neutrinos" a striking 10 foot high granite cone inscribed with headlines of the last 100 years, and monuments to Canada's war dead, Sir Winston Churchill and the Ukranian genocide. I saw an amphitheater with room to seat 500, formal gardens, a skating rink, and light poles representing the northern lights. Throw in shopping, outdoor movies, fireworks, street performers, and a theater ticket booth and you have a pretty good idea of what the area has to offer. We were there on a Monday morning and it wasn't very crowded, but by lunch time the office buildings emptied out and we saw hundreds of people hanging out, eating their brown bag lunches or hitting the food trucks. What a fun time we had strolling around the Square and taking in all of its sights.

It's a nice place to sit, play chess, table tennis, or basketball, stroll around the gardens, admire the different artworks all throughout the Square, or enjoy the pool at the nearby City Hall. All these activities are possible while taking advantage of the free Wifi provided by the city. Felling hungry and/or thirsty? You don't need to leave because there are several eateries in the Square to choose from: Three Bananas Cafe, L'Espresso Café, City Centre Food Court, and Kids in the Hall. Not feeling a sit down restaurant? Then see one of the food vendors selling hot dogs, donuts, waffles, smoothies, etc. With tables and chairs under huge red umbrellas, this is a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee while reading a book or watching people having fun. The Square is also where all festivals and events are being held. While on the Square, please visit TIX on the Square Box Office & Store, a non-profit box office where they sell artwork made by local artists, and tickets to local music, theatre and dance events. I actually bought my souvenir item from here during my last visit.

First time to the new location and it is absolutely stunning!…read more Conveniently located just off 127 street, there's sufficient parking in the lot plus street parking around the residential area. Which means no more parking wars with the rest of the strip mall at the previous location! In my humble opinion it looks like a very modernized, architecturally designed building with a twist. The exterior strip lighting around the building is pretty sharp, and the interior sports a couple retro-throwback pieces :) (Please refer to the taco chairs and spaceship-looking fireplace pictures) Its a larger, open designed space with a nice meeting room available to book, not-for-profit organizations receive a better rental rate! And it also has this stunning mosaic showpiece in the one corner by the front doors. A lot of glass windows would provide a ton of natural sunlight as well - I look forward to spending some quiet time here and basking in the sunshine! There's also a nice sized area for the kids section and a cool fish tank right by the main desk past the front doors. The staff I met are also lovely, well-dressed and well-informed ladies I think the retro fireplace is my favourite part of the interior; I'm quite biased when it comes to how well I can stay warm in any space lol!

This gives me a way to read that doesn't disturb my partner while letting me brush away the cares of the day from my busy mind. My eyes start to close and I turn my phone off. I don't need to go to the library to get a good book, I can get one instantly from a list of available books. Did I say how much I love Libby? I love Libby! Libby helps me keep track of characters in murder mysteries, it allows me to check the meaning of a newly encountered word, it also lets me highlight sections and take notes for the next time I borrow a book that I might read again. If I want to see a picture of some plant or architectural feature or type of hat mentioned in the text, Libby makes it easy to google for an image. Yes I love Libby.
